Hello,

Sweet potatoes and carrots  r beneficial for me and I eat them VERY often ... 3-4 x per week ... however;  I have read that they have a relatively  high glycemic index ... which means that they can cause dangerous rises in insulin levels ... hence some of these benficials foods confuse me ...

Any views on this ??

- I find that if I eat them with good fat- I have no problem- but sweet potatoes on their own is too much for me.
Carrots I have no reaction to - I eat them daily - but I have started to eat them with some fat as well- like cheese og butter/ghee /cream.

Unless you are diabetic, IMHO, I wouldn't say they would cause dangerous rises in insulin levels.  And as HB mentions, eating them w/ a ben. fat helps. The fat helps to slow down the rate at which it is converted (not sure that's the right word - having a brain ____) to sugar and absorbed. That's one reason all these low fat diets are not good. IMHO.  If you have BS probs and want to eat higher GI foods, try to do so at least at lunch. That way you have time to 'work it off' LOL before bedtime. :-)

I have to agree and it makes so much sence to eat it with a good fat in order that it would slow down absorption !!!
Very smart indeed  ;)
I also eat carrots practically daily ... hopefully we won't turn orange !!!

I did just email you recently. Will PM you.
BS means blood sugar. The good fat will just slow down the rate of absorption. You should be ok if you don't overdo it. :-)  :K)

Plus it's rare you eat them by themselves (raw carrots have a much lower glycemic index then cooked carrots) so whatever you're eating them with will effect the glycemic count...if you eat them with protein it will bring the glycemic count down

I read the Schwartzbein Principle, and found it a very informative book.  Of course, it's a one-size fits all, approach, but I understand better how to keep carbs always with some fats and proteins, for balance.

This is sort of like The Cortisol Connection Diet book I'm reading. There are definitely things in it I dont agree with, but they very much stress balancing your proteins/carbs/fats.  A lot of good info. As w/ a lot of books we read outside BTD, we just throw away the parts that don't 'comply' and keep the rest. :-)

Hi Lisalea,
I use fruits and yogurt in my morning smoothie, some nuts, starchy vegetables and one or two rice cakes every day.  I don't eat any pasta or other grains except those two rice cakes, which are a base for walnut/almond butter.  I top it with my only sweetener, a drizzle of blackstrap molasses, about 1/2 tsp. per rice cake.

I have a small sweet potato with ghee most days.  On other days, I'll have sweet baked squash, like delicata or sugar dumpling, with ghee.  I juice vegetables in the morning, and always throw in some carb-rich vegetables, like carrots and parsnips, along with the celery, parsley, kale or collards, gingeroot and wheat grass.

My big meal is midday, and is usually lamb and a super big serving of steamed greens or brussel sprouts or broccoli with red onions.  Sometimes I'll eat sardines instead, or maybe cod or halibut.  If I want a very light lunch, I'll have a couple of soft boiled eggs and spinach salad.

Evening meal is the sweet potato and salmon.

Really?  Your diet isn't varied any more than that?  I figured that if I only ate a few beneficial foods, I'd probably eventually develop allergies to them, being allergy-prone.  I end up eating a whole lot of neutral foods just to have a varied diet, especially since the list of beneficial A-nonnie proteins is a little short.  I always get in one meal a day with a beneficial protein (the side items are easier), but I thought our diets needed to be varied more.  Maybe not.

I would be worried as well
- and I do think my diet would be boring without HEALTHY neutrals....
