Okay, just wondering.  How many walnuts or other nuts do yall eat in a day?  I am trying to cut back, but it seems I am still eating like at least 2 handfuls a day or more.  I LOVE them so much.  Anyway, I guess the only way for me to not overeat them is to only soak a handful the night before to ensure I cannot eat more than that.  

The prob is, I soak more for my husband and oldest boy (youngest doesn't like them), and then I end up eating most of them.  

Thoughts and ideas on how I can scale back.  I am not craving sweets anymore, now it's NUTS.  I am NUTS!

Every morning, I eat a small handful of nuts and add it to my breakfast concotion.

I have small hands; I think the nuts would measure out to 1 tablespoon.

If I have seeds in the form of pumpkin seeds or flaxseeds, I'll have about 1 tablespoon.

This is my nuts/seeds alottment for the day.

Perhaps try measuring your nuts or seeds out for portion control.  Put the nuts/seeds in pre-portioned bags, containers, or whatever food storage tool will work for you.

Nuts/seeds are small, very rich and tasty; it can be easy to overeat them if one is not cognizant of portions and they are concernd about overeating them.

I think nuts works best for me at my midmorning coffeebreak- it is the time where I used to have cokies or bakers bread- so it is filling with a few nuts and some dry fruit.

I think Aliaīs suggestion is really good !

I sometimes use my excel sheat with the minimum/maximum servings  for each food graoup- I just mark when I have eaten 1 serving- and you can easy see if you have had all your nuts - by thursday or...
I donīt do it all the time- but when I need to see if my food balance. :-)

I probably eat more nuts than I ought to. I almost always have 1-2 T of peanut butter when I'm looking for a snack (better than an avoid!), and sometimes I'll also have either a handful of walnuts, or pepitas, or dry roasted edamame.

I get tamari almonds, walnuts are good but they are a little dry tasting when eating a handful.  They taste better when adding to a skillet dish and lightly toasted with ghee or tamari sauce.

I just eat a few, 4-5 pieces or halves, whenever the mood strikes me--sometimes twice, or even three times a day.

I usually pay little attention to portion control, because I'm still adjusting to BTD choices.  Also, I keep losing weight!    :D

~3 tablespoons per day of mixed nuts & seeds: Flax, almonds, pine & pumpkin. Mainly, these go into my mixed salad, ~1 1/2 teaspoons ground flax goes into my morning drink, and another portion of the mix eaten as a small snack with banana.

first, i havn't eaten nuts at all this week but usualy when i do its just one type of nut (Walnut/Pumpkin/Pecan/Almond) and its definately not a handful..maybe more like a meal..id say 1 pound of nuts. i seem to do pretty fine with this ammount, and if i don't eat anything besides the nuts 2 hours before and 2 hours after then i can do really well eating 1 pound of nuts. thats about 6 handfuls for me

What's the risk with eating too many?  

I have a large handful of walnuts (used to be almonds pre-BTD) and a TBS of flax seeds in my morning smoothie, often with almond milk.  I seem to do better in the AM with fats than meats.  I do this every day, and often have a small amount later in the day - more like a TBS, or if I'm really hungry, another handful of some other type of nut.  Is that too much?

I can t overdo a handful a day, and my hands are tiny!  lol

For me, I know if I have had too many because they feel like a rock sitting in my tummy and try to come back up. My limit is a small handful and probably none at all...

I know I've had too many nuts when I can sense that my digestive system is having a challenging time digesting all of the nuts.  I also feel a little heavy inside.  I also think the scale or snug clothing would be other indicators.

The portion recommendations are merely guidelines in the ER books; if one feels better with more nuts/seeds then that is an individual choice.

Yep! The scale definitely tells me if I 've had too many.  I like to put just a small handful of raw almonds, or almonds and walnuts in a bag to eat on my way home from work.  They help me to not grab whatever to eat while I get my supper ready so I think they help me keep my appetite in check.  I could definitely over eat them if I had the whole bag available at once. (I use snack size bags to divide them up.)

Yes...snack bags are convenient for trips, car rides, on-the-go outings; I used to buy them.

I've often wondered about this.  For those of us who (I know I'm fortunate in this regard) don't have to worry about gaining weight (at least for now), are the things that are listed as avoids citing "metabolic inhibitor" applicable to us?  I have to assume so, or they probably would not be on the list, but what's the deal?  I've been 5' 4" & 104 lbs for as many years back as I can remember - less in high school.  Is there more to metabolic inhibition than weight control?

Stephanie, inhibited metabolism would mean slower processing of food to energy. And when metabolisn slows down, chances are, instead of energy you'd have fat storage. This is put very simply! With age, metabolism usually slows down and we notice many bits going south :P

Never thought you could eat too many nuts especially the good ones.  In a discussion with my doctor (G.P) was told to switch from macadamia to walnuts for my cholesterol problem (for cost purposes).

I don't have a weight problem but still thought that you couldn't have too much of the 'good fats'.  What could be the detriment  ??)

The only thing that concerns me is getting sick of them !!!  :X

Walnuts are very good but I agree that just eating handful of walnuts can be blah so you can also chop them and put them in salads or add to chicken dishes (lightly toasted with tamari sauce makes them crunchy in the skillet).

Nuts can be hard to digest and I think that's one of the reasons to not eat too many.

I have 2 Tb of ground flax every morning in smoothies.  In the evening, I have a couple of Tb. nut butter on my toasted rice cakes:  raw almond butter mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with chopped walnuts.

Soaking them overnight makes them so much more digestible, and I think that is why I can actually eat so MANY without it ever bothering me.  And I continue wanting more!

Soaking them does make them more digestible and I enjoy the taste of soaked nuts and seeds; I find that they have a different texture as opposed to eating plain unsoaked raw nuts and seeds.

I eat nuts practically every day.  Normally just a handful, but I find I eat more when I am out for the day or travelling...a nut and dried fruit mix is in my bag just about all the time, in case there is a situation with a meal where there is nothing available for me to eat.

Yes, I had the impression that since they were beneficial, I could get by with eating more than the recommended amount.  Not so for me.  The scales will tell me.  They do contain fat, albeit good fat, but they contain both monounsaturated and saturated, I believe.  I have backed off on them lately and can already tell a difference in my waist size.   ;D  All the working out, of course, is very necessary as well, but backing off the nuts and oils has made a difference in a very short time for me.  Also, just a smoothie in the a.m. is helping too, I think.
