How important is knowing my secretor status? Also what is the easiest way to find this out? Would it be the mail order test? It takes so long for the results.

Knowing your secretor status can make the difference of seeing a little improvement in your health or seeing a lot of improvement. :-)
You can order from NAP. They do it by saliva. It takes about 2 wks for the results.

Wouldn't it be nice to know your secretor status the day you were born...what's two more weeks?

Knowing one's secretor status can help to fine tune one's eating for optimal health and energy.

There are various nuances between secretor and non-secretor differences that need to paid attention to for the various blood types ranging from increasing meat frequencies weekly, decreasing grain portions weekly, reducing/eliminating dairy portions weekly, and various neutral foods changing to avoid status, et al.

I already can't wait for my secretor results! I ordered last week.

I had my results 2 or 3 DAYS after I mailed it to the lab. You can request your results on line, and you'll have them much faster.
To me, waiting/not knowing is always the worst part. My health, which had made leaps & bounds from just starting the BTD, made more extremely life-altering changes after I found out I was a Nonnie. It's worth every penny. And you can't always guess your BT - I was stunned to find out I was a Nonnie. Not happy . :'(... but once I dropped & swapped avoids/compliants, things got even better. Never going back  ;D

It's definitely worth it.  There are only a few differences but they are very important ones.

For example, upon knowing I was a nonnie, I knew I had to move on without coffee, sugar, soy and WHEAT!  These made a giant difference in my health.  But I get to eat more meat.  :-)

my story is very similar, swap oats for sugar - love being able to eat more meat & not feel guilty  ;D

Knowing your secretor status is more important if you are a non-secretor, more avoids, more health issues to watch out for. Check it out though, it will be worth it.

I sent my test off yesterday and I can't wait to find out!
How long does it usually take for your results to get back to you?

Cheers!

I have to vent here....  After 3 1/2 years of approximate BTD, I finally got the money together to order secretor test kits for me and my kids.  They got here yesterday, so today we sat around the table and spit into the tubes together.  (Then I chased my almost 4yo daughter around the house trying to get a full specimen because she got bored of spitting after a few minutes.)  So then I pull out my mailing envelopes, call the 800 number and guess what?  No pick up service.  I can drive 1.25 hours to the nearest drop station, but I've already missed today's pick up and they won't be back again until Monday. (Today is Friday.)  Arggggggggghhhhhh!!!!   >:( I'm going to have to take them to the post office and pay extra to have them shipped express tomorrow.

Vent vent vent...Thanks for listening.

Posted by: Oonu, Friday, January 12, 2007, 9:41pm; Reply: 16
Yes, read the package it says you can refridgerate them, or freeze them..?

I sent mine on Jan 2nd and I called yesterday and they said they wait until there are 10 specimens to do the testing, so hopefully soon.
Mind you that is in Canada!

wait... wait... wait... tap... tap... tap...

I think I'm a non-secretor, but after reading more on nonnies, I think I want to be a secretor...   :-/

Cheers!

It takes 3 to 6 weeks for lab results up here in Canada so be patient.... reason being the lab does 20 at a time and they wait till they have sufficient numbers and unfortunately people up here in Canada aren't rushing to get it done but that will change one day

Oonu or Mike or anyone else who knows, I would love the details on secretor status testing in Canada.  I found a like that Debra posted some time ago where you can order the kit, but I believe that one is sent to the US?  Did not know it could be done here.  I know my ND has details, but won't see him for more than a week and I am getting very curious!

Thanks for any info...

try here:

or here:
877-ABO-TYPE.
NAP store in Magog, Quebec.  The number is 819-868-1119.
http://www.abovie.com/EnglishCanada/EnglishCanada.htm
or order them directly as well as any supplement in the ABOvie store:
http://www.abolife.com/Shopping/shopping.htm

someone mentioned this:

Phone 416•968•0496
Fax 416•928•0634

might be worth asking about secretor testing done there.

Thank you Lola!  I had the abolife one, I think they send down to the US for testing...but the aboessentials is a new one for me and looks like the place that Oonu and Mike were referring to...with the 4-6 week results!  Perfect!

I wonder if my ND will be put off if I order it now and get a jump on things...hmmmmm....

I'm really frustrated now.  I'm dumping the specimens, sterilizing the tubes and starting over.  I completely forgot about the MLK Holiday on Monday here in the US.  There's no way I could get them out and to the other side of the country in a reasonable amount of time using USPS.  I'll do them again on Tuesday, and drive the 1.25 hours to the DHL Express drop off place first thing Wednesday morning.

Waaaaaah!  But I want to know NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My inner brat shows through.

You A's out there that are waiting to find out your secretor status, just remember that A's have the most differences in food choices between sectretors and nonnies. And what ever your secretor status turns out to be, both have pros and cons but you will feel better and perhaps it will explain a lot of things about yourself, it sure did for me.

Welcome to the BTD Forums.

If you click the Member Center button at the top of this page, then click Avatar Settings on the left side of the new page you will be taken to a page where you can select a blood type avatar.  Having a blood type avatar is an easy way to share your blood type with other forum readers so that they can respond to you in a blood type appropriate way.

You can add information below your avatar setting, such as Rh+/-, A1 or A2, MN blood typing information or whatever else you want to, by going to the Profile Information section in the Member Center and typing in the Personal Message box.

You can also create a Signature of any other information you want to share that will go at the bottom of every message you post.

I also encourage you to indicate your gender, age, and location in the world in the Member Center Personal Information section, Signature, or Personal Message box once again so that other members will be able to better respond to you.

You can start with the Secretor info and links in the Tutorial, although you should probably read the whole tutorial.

Yes, my little guys are A's and that's one of the reasons I forked over the money for all three of us.  (I only earned $300 last year, so $150 worth of tests is a REALLY big deal for me!)  I'm hoping we'll be able to figure out my husband's status from the kids.  I was able to figure out his bloodtype from the kids and from knowing both his parents bloodtypes as well.  Am I right that one of your parents must have the same secretor status as you?  So if I'm a nonnie and one of our children is a secretor, then my husband would have to be a secretor, too?

No

Yes

However, the reverse case (your a secretor and a child a non-secretor) would not determine the secretor status of the father. The father could be be either secretor or non-secretor.

Congrats on joining the club Ben! :D  Btw, what's your Rh status?  Grain and Meat frequency values change for us O's if you are Rh-.

Sorry for my ignorance but I'm still learning too!  How do you find your Rh status?
I'm an A+  so is my Rh a + as well?

Yes, I think you got that right. :D Let me explain it another way.

"Rh" is short for Rhesus which is a sub variant blood type.  It is designated after your blood type as either "+" or "-"

Your Rh status (+ or -), has an impact on some of the portion/frequency recommendations for certain foods.  Other subvariants that have an impact on food choices, frequency, etc., are MM and A2.
Posted by: Don, Friday, January 19, 2007, 9:29pm; Reply: 36
Yes, if you are A+ that means your ABO type is A and your Rh type is + (positive).

Secretor status doesn't really seem important until you suspect that you are a nonnie. Took me 3 years after I started BTD to finally spit and test, and yes I am a nonnie. What made me think so was my many health problems, some of which improved after being on the basic A secretor diet but some others persisted and I went to the next level.

Thanks for sharing your experience.  It's nice to hear that you took this lifestyle to the 'next level' by getting tested.

It is a reassuring feeling that one knows exactly what foods they should be eating.  There can be alot of gray areas to contend with.
