BTD Forums  /  Cook Right 4 Your Type  /  substitute for OJ in recipes?

I've come across a couple of recipes lately that call for OJ as an ingredient. I don't drink OJ (it gives me heartburn and it's an avoid). Has anyone used another juice as a substitute, which gives an similar flavor?

I've been wondering the same thing, since I am the only one who can tolerate orange juice in my household. With the O off to school and only the A non's at home, I was thinking of trying tangerines as a sub for orange juice.

I have been thinking about lemon juice and agave nectar combined might give that citrusy sweetness to a recipe, but I've yet to try it...  :-/

Kristin, I thought about lemon juice and agave as well, but I think I'll try geminisue's suggestion first. Thanks to you both!

grapefruit juice is what I use, it gives recipes calling for orange juice a compliant 'citrus' flavor.

Another good suggestion, Lola.

In the past, I think I have always substituted any orange juice that was called for in  recipe with frozen pineapple juice concentrate or grapefruit juice.

My A SIL had this same problem. Used to go thru a GIANT tub of Tums a week or every 2.  Found BTD, gave up the OJ, no more heartburn. :-)

If you don't have problems with mango, it also makes a good substitute.  The pineapple or grapefruit both work as well however. That gives you three potential substitutes. :)
