Let's make Thanksgiving something to be thanful for...before, during and after the meal.

What on your menu are healthy must-have foods for thanksgiving?  All type's foods are welcome, particularly if they are beneficials for some types...the pumpkin and sweet potato differences will be pretty prevalent I'm sure, as an O that's one case where I can have all of the above. ;)

Green beans
roasted root veggies
mashed sweet potatoes
cranberry relish (I made this with glycerine last year and it was great)
Pumpkin pie or pumpkin custard
Fruit pie (I used all fruit blueberry preserves to sweeten a blueberry pie last year)

The stuffing thread has some great ideas for stuffing,b=btdlf1,v=display,m=latest

Desserts are a bit intimidating to me at the moment with trying to control blood sugar, and avoiding casein absolutely. I'm thinking a pudding might be doable, or maybe something with macadamia nuts...

You could try baked pears with some pomegranate or black cherry concentrate. I made mine in the slow cooker and they came out really nicely. No sugar, just a little pinch of allspice, and a sprinkle of chopped toasted walnuts right before serving . . . they disappeared quickly! :) They're great chilled too.

Oh, here's our list:

butternut squash
sweet potatoes
fresh green beans
fresh herbs
real whipped cream (my one indulgence)

We're going to make one really decadent casserole (a spinach-artichoke dish) and have everything else very simple and fresh. Dessert will be pumpkin custard and cranberry-apple cider cobbler. Roomie might make a small batch of cornbread with beans, which will be her treat, not mine *chuckle* :)

How weird-n-twinlike that you said that!  It is a tradition in my family to make "Page 26", which is a decadent spinach-artichoke casserole from the Unitarian-Universalist retreat, "The Mountain", cookbook (on page 26 *lol*!).  It is the most delicious thing imaginable, and I will definitely be making it this year.  It contains a lot of dairy avoids, but, hey, no wheat or corn.  That's what I choose to focus on *lol*.  That, and the delicious taste.  I'm only sorry I am choosing to forego my 100% rye stuffing, because you get a little of that and a little Page 26 and a little fresh cranberry relish together and, boy howdy.  Now you are talking Thanksgiving.

Interesting that you wrote about the pears.  I bought a couple this weekend and I have some apples and I was thinking about cooking them on top of the stove in a little ghee with some agave syrup or a little brown sugar and some raisins or dried cherries, kind of like escalloped apples.  How long would they take in the slow cooker and does the "sauce" thicken up.

Mmm.  Great topic! I just went to an early Thanksgiving potluck for my church last night.  It was so yummy & I managed to stay relatively compliant.  Not grain-free as I have been eating... but no wheat, at least.  Dairy was my big downfall, but all in all I felt good about it.  I managed to resist stuffing, homemade bread, cobbler, and coffee... so it's all good.

I ate:

Cranberry Sauce
tiny spoonful of mashed potatos with gravy - I couldn't resist.
green beans
baked squash
curried kale and chard with lamb sausage (I brought that to substitute for stuffing)

Thin slices of pumpkin pie and lemon pie (didn't eat the crusts)
Small piece of Brighid45's amazing carrot cake recipe (I brought that too. Thanks Brighid, for another delicious recipe!)
Homemade chocolate pudding, blueberry, whipped cream parfait.
Green tea with dessert.

We're having a small dinner on Thanksgiving with my parents and fortunately my mom is really open to planning a BTD friendly meal with me.

The menu is:
Dungeness Crab & homemade cocktail sauce appetizer
Chicken and Dumplings (made from spelt flour) with kale and carrots
Cranberry relish
Curried chard with onion & lamb sausage*
Mashed Sweet Potatos*
Green Salad
Pumpkin Pie with spelt flour crust*
