Hello fellow BTDer's

I just wondered if any type O's out there have successfully treated mild depression (especially seasonal depression) with supplements.  I would be really curious to find out what you recommend.

I tried the determinator, but it recommended more supplements than I could possibly begin to afford.  It seemed like catchol rhodiola formula applied most... has anyone tried that one?  

I am going through a little rough stuff right now, coinciding with the time change reducing daylight a lot... I am feeling blue, prone to not eating as well and low energy.  I know that if I start getting more exercise that will help... but I could also really use some extra help from supplements too, if anyone has tried some that work please share!

I would recommend catechol and zero grains..  You might be able to get L-tyrosine & Rhodiola (sp?) individually in a HFS cheaper if the cost of catechol is an issue.

Exercise, exercise, exercise.  Even if you only make a goal of 15-20 minutes a day.  Climb a staircase 20 times.  While at the computer, move your legs around, stepping out to the side with your leg then bring it back, and alternating with the other.

The more you are able to move, the more it will help you.

Rhodiola is the one that comes to mind!  It is a fantastic herb for type O's, giving a stabilizing energy boost, as well as lightening the mood and raising the oxygen level in the blood.

Thanks everone!  Glad to hear that Rhodiola works for you.  I ordered the Catchol rhodiola from NAP.  I really trust them after using Deflect with such great results... so I am looking forward to seeing how that works when it arrives in a few days.  Till then, I am re-joining my local Bikram yoga studio and plan to say goodbye to grains (again!  those stupid grains just keep trying to come back, though :/ )  Hopefully I'll be feeling better soon.

Catechol helps me if I stay compliant in terms of wheat and coffee. If I ingest them I am worse off.

Catechol helps me stay compliant (I am petrified of using wheat or coffee ;D) and I reduce the amounts of Catechol till I am not consuming and I go back to wheat and coffee.  ::) I have learned my lesson and hopefully this time I will not go back to these avoids (at least not in big amounts).

BTD on its own works wonders on me. I am now on my 3rd week 100% compliant and feeling great, even without the Catechol, which I take some times. I love it when I take it for exercise. It becomes so easy 8)

I have also noticed that if I am eating a lot of meat and I take it on the day I do not exercise it is too much (overdose of L-Tyrosine)

Thanks Susana, for the advice on coffee.  I have been having coffee a few times a week lately after not having any for a long time.  I'll be sure to be extra careful not to succumb when my friends offer me a cuppa in the future.  I didn't realize how that could be as serious as wheat.

I am practically convinced coffee is much worse for my brain than wheat. Wheat and sugar clouds my thinking. Coffee gives me a wondeful high and then... a dreadful low. But not always and that is why i tend to risk it.

I agree about coffee.  I think it is right up there with wheat as an O avoid but doesn't get as much attention, probably because it is easier to avoid because at least Big Agribiz doesn't go around sticking coffee into everything and its brother.  Coffee is murder on the Type O system.

All the suggestions above are excellent for depression and I would add that omega 3, such as you find naturally in very high-quality form in salmon, is excellent for it, too.  Try to incorporate more salmon, as well as olive and/or flax oil into your diet.

Other than that, stick to the BTD, exercise (this is key), get out in the sunshine for a few minutes each day, get those omega-3's into your system, and hang in there.  I think many of us are having a rough time with this asaine time change.  I'm starting to resent it more and more in recent years.  What a throw back!  I think they should pick one time (my vote is for Daylight Savings Time, but whichever, just pick one) and stick to it.

Oh!  That reminds me, one more good thing for depression is to take a little CoQ10 each morning--bestows energy and a sense of well-being/optimism, at least in me it does.

Another thing you might wish to try is a high-quality, sublingual B-12 supplement just in the morning (it will keep you up at night if you take it too close to bedtime!) and/or some nutritional yeast flakes (very high in the B spectrum of vitamins and also in the L-tyrosine that KK recommended, I believe, but am not sure on that last one.  I'll have to check the label.  I buy a brand called KAL.  Da bomb!

along with the supps...go to bed early...yes early....too much artificial light exposure can wreak havoc on your emotional state especially in the fall winter months... like before 10pm and wake around 7:30 with the sun rise and go outside and bath yourself in light.

I'm doing better.  I cut out grains 100% again and the occasional coffee splurge is a thing of the past too.  I've been eating well and I rejoined the local Bikram Yoga studio (90 minute sessions of strenuous yoga in 104 degree, 60% humidity room) and have been going a lot.  Going to add some more salmon to my diet too.  My Catechol is still on it's way.  I'm looking forward to adding that.

I'll have to work on getting to bed earlier.  That's really hard for me.  By the time I get done with work, go to yoga, and eat dinner it's already past 10pm.  Yikes!  I'll try to work on my schedule.  

Oh & PT, thank you so much for all the suggestions... I'll try to incorporate them, all except for the sun one.  I *wish* I could get out in the sunshine, but I live in western Oregon and it's rain, rain, and more rain all winter.  It really takes some getting used to that the rains always set in right when the time changes... it's dark and gloomy here, even in the middle of the day... a lot of people here suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD, just like the American Diet :) ) because it's so drab.  Hopefully with all this good advice and the BTD, I can avoid it this year!

I have found Vitamin D (3) helps a lot (SAD et.).  I use one 400 in the summer, but about 1200 a day in the winter, may go up a little as we get into the dark depths.  Really blitzes feelings of depression within half an hour.  I take 2 400's with breakfast, one with lunch.  It also is good, apparently, for bone-building (helps uptake of calcium).  I tried rhodiola, but just not enough bang for the buck.  And Vitamin D is dirt cheap.

I am thinking of getting a "Litebook", a small portable 'light box' that is around $200.
Do any of you know if this is a good deal. It has a 2-year guarantee, is rechargable..
 I read the ad in Alternative Health magazine & checked the web site (another great thing about the internet!--checking products without writing, phone calls, & travel!)
I try to exercise & get sun (which is hard in Chicago also!).
I'm sure I have lost half of my productivity in my life due to this as well as other factors.  Our bodies sure require a lot of time & effort!

Sam-e by Natural Factors is also very cheap and ok for O's in case of depression...:D
