HI, Paul and started the BTD 6 weeks ago today.  We started with the arthritis series since he has RA and I have fibromyalgia.  I also incorporated the fatique and allergy books by comparing the list from each book and sticking with the common foods.  I did not worry about portions the first 4 weeks, just focusing on what we were eating.  The last 2 weeks I have been paying more attention to the portions, but not worrying to much about them. Really as much for the financial aspects of it as for the weight part of it.  It is just cheaper to eat 4-6 oz of meat than 9-10 oz,  ;)
Anyway.....neither of us began to exercise.  I started Curves with my daughter yesterday, but only have gone once so far (she has been going for a few months now, but is not interested in the BTD at all  ::) ) So far this is what has occured:

Paul: lost 10 pound the first 4 weeks.  He has not been back to the Dr since and we don't own a scale, so am not sure how much he has lost since then if any.  He started eating some neutral cookies I found at the store every day during his 2:00 tea break, so that may have slowed his weight loss down.  He completely eliminated coffee by the 4th week and is enjoying his roasted green tea   :D  He has more energy and stamina for physical chores, like mowing the lawn, and does not suffer for a day or 2 after any longer.  He stopped snoring  ;D  ;D the very first week!!! but every now and then lately will let out a mini snore, LOL.  I think it is the cookies  ;)  He can not self adjust any of his prescription medications, so he is still on the same amount of those.  His rhumatologist is very happy with how he is doing right now, but is not ready to lower any doses yet.  He has stopped taking the OTC antacid prilosec  ;D and not suffering heartburn for the first time since I met him (25 years ago). He has been able to do well with no allergy medication also, though I am not sure if that is because of the diet or the season change.  His contanance is younger looking, with less stress from the pain. When we first started the BTD, I was sure he was a nonnie. Through the last 6 weeks, I have noticed that he can tolerate foods that are Ok for secrestors, but avoids for nonnies.  So he may very well be a secretor.  I am hoping he sees the need to get our sectretor status checked soon. He is doing very well and is very happy with this life style change  :D

Myself: I lost 9 pounds the first month, 4 the 5th week and 3 the 6th---16 pound total.  In addition to the weight, I no longer feel bloated or swollen from the fibro.  I have had far rewer headaches and my muscle pain has pretty much subsided.  I have been able to cut down on my medication 3 times since we started (once every 2 weeks my body faithfully said "wooooohhhh, to much!!!", LOL) My fatigue is much better, though I still have days where I am just very tired.  Even on most of those days, I can keep going without letting it stop me as it used to.  I am sleeping much better than I ever have and am actually waking up in the same position I fell asleep in quite often!!  :o Not waking up stiff or in pain any longer  is awsome.  On rare days, I actually will get 8 or so hours sleep (not during the week when the alarm wakes us up  >:( ) and will wake up feeling refreshed.  I have neeeeeevvvveeerrr felt like that in the morning before, in my whole life!!!   Those days are wonderful.  I do find that every 5 or 6 days I am really tired and fatigued, and am hoping that it is my body cleansing and repairing itself.  I actually have days that my body craves exercise or stretching.  I was like that when I was little, always moving my arms, waist, legs or stretching them.  I am sure it was irritating to the others around me to see me constantly moving, but it felt good  ;) I now have days where I just have to do this again, my body just craving the movement and enjoying the stretching to the point that I will do streches while talking to Paul or just for the fun of it.  This is not often yet, but I know it will increase as time goes on.  My seasonal allergies have calmed down, but have not gone away.  I am allergic to the cold, and this morning my feet and ankle broke out all over the place with hives, since we are not putting the heat on yet and the floors are starting to get cold. But putting on wool socks took care of it.  I am finding the hardest thing for me to get rid of is the fatigue.  Even a highly benneficial breakfast will not "wake" me up if I did not get a long enough sleep.  Yet I am not tired at night  :(  :( so tend to stay up until 11:00 which is far to late when having to get up at 5:00 to get Paul off to work.  All in all, I am so very happy on the BTD and will never go back to my preBTD ways of eating!!
On a sad note, I am finding that I am the one that may very well be a nonnie.  I can not tolerate any foods that are even neutral for sectetors but an avoid for nonnies.  I have also read that 80% of folks with fibro are nonnies  :o  :(  >:(  :(  :'(
I really don't want to be a nonnie, but until I get the test done, I am sadly submitting to my bodies demands, and not eating those things.  

In the next few weeks I am hoping to focus on more variety in our menus.  Also, experimenting on baking as the cooler weather sets in.  I am also going to look into adding suppliments, other than vitamins which we already take.  With the prescribed medications, I need to thoroughly check them out before implimenting them into our diets.  I have found a wondeful olive oil at the grocery store that has the highly bennificial herbs for our conditions and it is sooooooooo yummy  ;D , as well as adding sea kelp as a salt substitute while cooking.  Increasing the exercise is another goal as well as encouraging Paul to start walking on the treadmill  ;) (I don't think I could talk him into Curves, LOL)

So.....we are halfway into our "try it for 3 months" and well..........we have definately gotten past the point of no return.  I have met some wonderful folks on the board (hug, hug to you all  ;) ) and want to thank everyone for their enouragement, help and support during this first 6 weeks  :D  :D
And am looking forward to what the next 6 weeks will bring  :D Sandy O

Sandy, I think the progress of you and your husband has been phenomenal!!  :K)   Thank you so much for keeping us posted.  You are like a beacon of light.  I'm showing your note to some people I know who have not yet been persuaded about the merits of BTD.

All these testimonials are so inspiring. It's my 3-week BTD anniversary, and I'm still going strong. I really haven't missed the avoids I used to eat (though this a.m. I really wanted to put ketchup on my scambled eggs). I'm convinced this diet is helping me and hope it will help my husband too if he sticks with it. Hope it continues to work for you and Paul, Sandy.

Great testimonial.

I am just over 2 weeks and still waiting for the 'pop right up in the morning' thing. I usually hit the snooze alarm 3-4 times and can sleep soundly in between the beeps.  ;D
I hate to get up in the morning, but have not been as tired lately and I haven't actually over slept since starting the diet.

Sandy,
Great job! Your posts are always really inspirational and motivating.  I am glad that you and your husband have seen so much benefit and I really admire your energy in exploring and sticking with the BTD.  It's great to read things like this testimonial to keep me going when avoid temptations arise.  Thanks again!

Now that's what I'm talking about!!!  This is what I'm waiting for Paul.  I'm tired of the heartburn and the 1 or 2 day recovery period  just for yard work.  That's good news.

Jayney, Hi!  My favorite, and only, daughter-inlaw gave me the name several years ago  and it is endearing.   I am not a potter, just the clay.  I will be watching Paul and Sandy, they really are amazing.   clay

Just curious if you are drinking OJ, or grapefruit juice. I know you are an O and my SIL is an A, but her constant heartburn (requiring a gigantic bottle of Tums a week or every 2), went away when giving up OJ.  
Seems there must still be something in your diet that is not liking you . LOL.  ;)

sandy this sounds exactly like me.  exactly. I am suspecting my cortisol is upside down. by that I mean it's low in the a.m. and high at night. should be the opposite. blame it on fatigued adrenals. check this out if you're interested :-)  :

keep us posted on how things are going. I have to say, I should come in here and read your beginning post each and every day. it is so inspirational. i'm with the others who have thanked you for taking the time to post all the details. knowing just how much damage can be undone in such a short time is truly amazing. :-)  and makes you want to stick like glue.   ciao!(sunny)

No OJ or grapefruit juice for me Italy.  Heartburn is not constant, just  sometimes in the AM before I get up and after I take my meds. (2 or 3 times a week). I may have a weak sphinchter muscle thingy.

Hey Page ! I'm a typO but can identify with you on this 'pop right up in the morning thingy'   I think if we were meant to ' pop up ' in the mornings we would have been born in a toaster.  :)  I too am in my third week.  Please let us know when this changes.  I emagine it will be so gradual that we'll wake up one morning and realize that we're getting up with more spunk than we use to.    clay

About the OJ and grapefruit juice thing....OJ is actually acidic in the system and believe it or not, grapefruit juice isn't!  I gave up the OJ and I very very rarely have any problems (only when I eat avoids).  Coffee is also very acidic.

Not being an O, I can only give advice as an outsider about popping up in the morning.  And you may well ask, "Oh, you lucky coffee-guzzling A, what have you to say?"  Just this: if you stop eating any dessert, including fruit, after dinner, it may  help you wind down and go on to sleep instead of having energy at night.  Instead of watching TV or even reading a book, just go on to bed early, early, early (8 pm isn't too early for those with FMS or chronic fatigue).  As your body adjusts to having more sleep, you may find that you can get up more easily.  Another thing:  if you haven't been on the BTD for very long, your body is still working on cleansing itself of the damage done to it over the years.  You may want to get some Deflect to help you on your way especially here at first.  The longer you're on the diet, the more you'll notice things changing.  Give it a few more months.

This may help those who seem to be having headaches in the early morning hours as well.  :)
