Hello everyone.
Today I am starting the BTD for the second time.
I began for the first time nearly 8 months ago. I lost 20 lbs and felt great! Then I fell off the wagon.  :B
I am a type A and I don't know if I'm a secretor or non-secretor. (How do I test that?)
All my life I have been a red meat and barbeque girl. I crave those terrible foods the same way I crave other things that are bad for me. (alcohol etc)
I have a blood disease called Von Willebraun's and my blood does not clot. I have been incredibly anemic all my life which led to my parents and doctors shoving spinach and red meat down my throat all the time.
My problem is that I am very close to my family and they are wary of me 'turning into a vegetarian' because they are afraid I will make myself sick. (hemoglobin wise)No one close to me in my life is very supportive of this decision I have made and that frustrates me because I have read a lot and this diet seems like a God send to me. It worked very well for the time I was previously on it.

Please give me any advice you may have for a newbie...I'll be listening.
I figure the best way to prove them wrong is to prove them wrong. I want to do this, but I want to do it right. I want to make sure to get the proper protein I need along with a balanced diet.

Again...I am so happy to have found a place I can come and be supported in my decision to change my lifestyle for the better.

Page-welcome back to BTD and the forum.  I don't know anything about your blood illness, but on here there are many, many wonderful people who will help you.  The BTD family.   Secretor status very important.  And...the wonderful Lola has posted for you on how to get it.  :)

Close family members not supportive of you...I know where you are coming from.  I have a family like it, but I keep at it as I know how I felt and looked four years ago.  And...I know how I feel today. :D

And...remember...you are not actually a vegetarian...just not a red meat eater or pork. (The other white meat as the commercial says...blaaaahhh).  Chicken, turkey, fish, eggs and depending on secretor status you may be able to have lamb.  yuuummmm.

I hope you have not been turned off of spinach.  It is a very beneficial veggie for you. ;)

For anemia~For Type A:

I would add 1-3 Tablespoons of liquid chlorophyl to your diet.  Or, you could do chlorophyl capsules.

Most Chlorophyls on the market are made from Alfalfa, which is a Type A Benneficial.

I'd also make sure you get plenty of Alfalfa sprouts on your salads.

Finding out your secretor status imho, will be the key to helping you end your cravings.  You might be a nonnie (slang for non-secretor) and therefore get to add a bit more animal protein to your diet.

Type A's are the only types that have the most diversity between the secretor diet and the non-secretor diet.  Type A's also have the most sub types.  You could be either an A1 or A2, so to me, getting secretor status tested for Type A is very important.

If you do suffer from fatigue, after your get your secretor status tested, you could also investigate the Health Series Books by Dr. D.  These are books that target eight specific health issues:

Fatigue
Arthritis
Allergies
Cardiovascular
Diabetes
Cancer
Menopause
Aging

These books refine the diet even more and recommend specific supplements for that particular health issue.

Thank you all. I appreciate the responses and I am eager to learn all you can teach me. I am like a dry sponge. Saturate me. :)

I ordered the secretor test today and am anxious to know the results of that.

I know that I am A+. Is there a sub-type difference between A+ and A-?

It is so funny that you say that Debra...
I am the only person in Tyson country who doesn't like chicken. At all. I have never liked chicken and don't eat turkey. Even on Thanksgiving, I always opted for the ham rather than turkey. (What is wrong with me?!?! :-/)
I do love salmon, and many of the seafood options on the type a plan.

I do love alfalfa sprouts and spinach. This recent spinach scare has really effected my everyday meals. Even when I am not on this diet, I do regularly eat spinach.

Positive or Negative is your Rhesus subtype.  That's somewhat important.  As Dr. D has said, there are possibly close to 300 different typing systems, though secretor status and the traditional Blood Type are the most important because those are expressed in your digestive system.

Someone else please explain to her the A1/A2 subtyping.  I'm at al oss for the moment.

Hey, Page!  Glad you found us!  You are in the right place at the right time.  Now, maybe you are ready to do this for yourself no matter what anyone else might think or say.  Regardless of what ails any of us, the blood type diet is the best way to give our bodies the very best shot at healing and maximizing our good health.  If we are feeding our bodies foods that are received as poison, how can we build health?  I would say, a good percentage of us on this Forum have been raised on mostly avoids, so you're not alone there.  So here you go on a big adventure.  Have fun!

Maybe you can find a source for local spinach.  The only problem came from a place in California that supplied to companies that packaged spinach in bags.  (Please, someone correct me if I'm mistaken about this.)  Most natural foods stores will have local farm-grown organic spinach.

That's fantastic that you have already taken action to find out your secretor status.  It's SO important when dealing with a chronic condition, and especially for type A's who have so many differences in diet between the two secretor statuses, as has already been mentioned.

Regarding the subtypes, hopefully someone will give you the intructions on getting those via bloodtests.  I'm not sure of the place to send the labwork.
