There was a thread going a while ago about menstrual cramps and ideas for relieving them.  I just wanted to share something I found that worked!

I usually have mild to moderate cramping on the 1st day of my period - it varies, depending on how much stress I've been under, what I've eaten, etc in that month.  

Anyway, I was at work (HFS) last Thursday and had some pretty strong cramps that made me pretty uncomfortable since I have to stand all day.  So, I did my usual routine of taking magnesium, doing alternate nostril breathing, stretching, etc.  I must have taken at least 900mg of magnesium over the morning and while it helped, I was still uncomfortable.  And I can't just do alternate nostril breathing and stretching all day long, especially when I have to help customers.  

So, I did some research in the store's books and found a reference for crampbark tincture.  Supposedly crampbark is particularly good for the type of cramps I have (extend down legs, into back, accompanied sometimes by nausea, poor digestion, etc).  I grabbed some crampbark tincture, took the maximum dose and within 30 minutes my cramps were ENTIRELY GONE!  I took the recommended doses for the rest of the day and was pain free!

Another idea I've had is to use fish oils, particularly around my period, but I plan to blog about that later, so stay tuned...

I just wanted to sing the praises of crampbark - again!  

It's that time of the month again and this morning I woke up to that familiar feeling right before I get cramps.  This usually happens early in the AM and wakes me up.  Then it progresses into cramps for the morning and early afternoon.  

Today, I got out of bed, took some crampbark, then went back to bed for about 30 minutes.  I've now been up for an hour and no cramps!  No tension in my legs, no lower back pain, nothing...

Hi debra,

Here is the quote that I read that made me try cramp bark.  It described my exact symptoms!  I have heard of other women for whom cramp bark has not been effective, I think because their cramps are of a different nature.  

Quoted from A Woman's Guide to Herbal Care

When menstrual pains are of a spasmodic nature or congestive nature and include low back pain, and pain that radiates down the thighs, there is no better choice than cramp bark.  

Some other herbal ideas from this book: feverfew, black cohosh, valerian.
