That appears to be what some of the type B do.

One advantage of doing it here on the forum is everyone can benefit from the information sharing. Also any new nonnies can find it here.

There is a Yahoo Group called Recipes4Nonsecretors which you can find here.  Apart from a lot of great recipes and cooking tips, there is discussion about the BTD in general, with a nonnie focus.

Seeing as how none of us seems to know how to get on the existing email list, or whether there even is one now, Don has a good point.  If we do decide to keep a thread going for nonnies, then once we've decided on details, we should probably start a new thread with a more indicative title.

Hey, good idea to have a thread for us here.  The email list isn't very active, though it is informative and has lots of good recipes uploaded.  It's funny how much the nonsecretors have in common, regardless of their different blood types, so this is cool.  I'd love to see a book or cookbook just for nonsecretors...one day perhaps.

Melissa -- The only nonnie commonality I can think of off the top of my head is intolerance for most kinds of sugar.  Can you tell us more?

although I m no nonnie, I basically follow the recommendations given to nonnies.

so I hope you all will share some of the recipes and tips given in the email list .......

Don -- For the benefit of all us newbie nonnies, what does IAP stand for?  (Then if we still don't understand, we can go use that Search function that Lola's always talking about.)

Victoria -- Doesn't everyone feel like the odd one out?  I always have, but then I'm a nonnie.  Any of you folks with the visitor's passes care to share your feelings?

That'd be a resounding "NO, you are not the only one who feels that way!" from me!  I've always felt extremely different from the other members of my own species.  Not sure if it is all about being a nonnie in my case, but I do believe that nonniehood is at least a player in the mix.

When I was growing up, I used to look around at everyone, and wonder to myself how they all knew the rules to the game and I didn't.  Maybe only on a nonnie board would that make sense.

I genuinely wondered if there had been a mistake, and maybe I had been born to the wrong family or wrong town, or maybe I had been put on the wrong planet.  I felt that different.  I wasn't interested in the things others were.  I didn't have anything to say when others were talking.  I had plenty to say, but no one was interested in the things in my head.  And I had plenty of interests. They just didn't seem to be shared by anyone.

I was raised in a coal mining town in Eastern Ky.  When I was a kid, I used to do yoga poses a lot, but I had never heard of yoga.  I did shoulder stands, cobra, the bow, alternate nostril breathing.  My mother used to gather her friends around to watch me touch the soles of my feet to the top of my head.  They thought it was cute.  It wasn't until Lilias came on tv years later, that I saw that I wasn't crazy.

I hope I can join you club one day. I haven't had my status checked yet. I don't know what I would do if it came back secretor. I already give up all dairy and red meat , I don't know if I could handle giving up tomatoes. Maybe soon I will come up with the courage and money to have the test done.

Being a family of As and Os, there are a lot of other similarities...the sugar is the biggest one, but also tomatoes, bananas, sweet potatoes, no corn, etc.  The sugar and tomatoes can make a lot of difference in common recipes.  Beyond food though, we have similar health challenges and just the commonality of having to be more strict with our food choices, or suffer the consequences.  In a way, we're all going through a refiner's fire at much higher temperatures than other blood type dieters.

I just saw on another thread that nonnies tend to have more trouble with their teeth.  I still have virtually all of my teeth, but only a few that have no fillings.  Hubby (the suspected secretor) has no fillings at all, and even has functional wisdom teeth!

Victoria -- Whoo, yeah, me too!  I never invented yoga, but I always wanted to do things from square one, so I'd understand them fully.  Like when our art class did textile painting, most of the kids ordered a stencil out of a book, but I designed my own pattern and cut the stencil myself.  It was just a little basket of stylized flowers for the corner of a hankie, but it was mine.

A friend says, though, that nobody knows the rules, they're all just faking it....

I've always felt different even from those whose share some of my eccentricities.  But at least now I feel connected to others on this thread with my “weird” (to others) food preferences. ::)

Me Too!  I am not a player at work either.  When situations force me to do so it will cause extreme stress and exhaustion on my entire system.

We need to have a nonnie's get-together at the next btd conference!  Along with a nonnie's cook-off!

They pack the fillets raw with a little sea salt into the lined cans.  The canning heat is what cooks the fish.  No water is added.  So delicate and tender!

There's some real worries going on among the fishermer of the northwest right now.  It seems that the government is promoting fish farming on a massive scale and beginning to squeeze out the local fisherfolks.  Also hydroelectric dams are killing the wild salmon as they try to swim upstream to spawn.  It's a concern.

I'm glad it arrived, and that you love it!  I think it's the best I've ever eaten.  I think the shipping costs must be a lot since it's heavy.  
I just bought two more cases last night, and one of the family dropped them off here in town.  They get over here once a month or so, so fortunately I'm able to avoid the shipping.  It's made me fall in love with salmon.  I used to have a hard time eating fish.  Now I can even buy the fresh Chinook and cook it, and still enjoy it after the whole process of messing with the fish.

Bravo for the starter of the Nonnie club house! I could relate to all of your posts. Feeling different and left out when it comes to sitting down to dinner and having a piece of any kind of bread with my meal - - NOT! My husband and sister are both "Os" with a side of secretor. I see them sit with Eziekel rolls with their meals and think of how I miss the taste of fresh baked bread. Okay - I'm over that now.

I have become creative with Nori and grape leaves for making wraps with my food. I take tuna and mix with olive oil and spices to taste. I then dampen the Nori or take an Olive leaf and wrap up the tuna into a roll and either eat like that or cut into small pieces. It is wonderful and it is satisfying. I finally found grape leaves that are not in vinegar and they come from Greece. I have also found that mixing kelp in with the olive oil and some garlic gives a nice taste like a caesar dressing.

Oh by the way, the teeth issues have been with me too. This alone makes me feel different. Everyone around me has these healthy white teeth. All my back teeth have crowns and three are with root canals.  :'(  I just found out two days ago that three more teeth have issues and need to have additional work. Thank goodness for dentist or I wouldn't be able to eat the recommended meat. YIKES  :o

They are a product of Bella Famiglia - Mediterranean Grape Leaves. Says they are harvested early in the season to ensure superior tenderness and flavor. They use salt, which I'm sure isn't sea salt but I rinse them to remove as much as I can before using.

Don's lists are great. It helped me with knowing what all can have no matter the blood type.

I found something at the HFS that I didn't know existed. Glutino makes Gluten Free Crackers made with flax seeds. Ingredients: Water, Whole Flax seeds and sea salt. I use these to snack on and as a filler with salads and spreads that most would use a cracker or bread. They taste pretty good.

The name comes from citrus (which is apparently where the acid was first discovered), but it's cheaper to make it from corn.

Lola - I feel like a real dummy at the moment. I was looking at the box and realized that these are dehydrated. I mother language is English but what I recognized was "Deshydrates" on the box and then turned the box around and did see that these crackers are dehydrated at a low heat to preserve full nutritional benefit.

So YES - - these are dehydrated.  :B

In a Jan 26, 2006 message you mentioned that  all nonnies have less IAP(Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase).  Is is why we avoid acid foods?  I thought we had more acid or is that just "O" type blood?  And is there a way to measure the alkaline or acid?

Stomach acid and Intestinal alkaline phosphatase are unrelated and are in different organs.

Having less IAP is not related to needing to avoid acidic foods.

Type Os have a more acidic stomach environment and therefore can digest red meat easily.

I don't know how to measure either.

Not MoDon; I believe it helps to break down fats.  It's turned on by the presence of protein.

IAP also helps in the absorption of calcium. So a type O diet high in protein, which stimulates IAP release, actually helps us absorb the calcium in our diet.

Judi, it could be your rh- status.  I'm finding as an Rh- that eating grain free (even thou I'm a secretor) works best for me.

JK - I'm no where close to being a medical practioner of any sort but I'm going to guess because you are celiac that you will need to eat more like a nonnie than a secretor. Join us nonnies! You will probably feel so much better.

By the way, it always surprises me when someone with celiac shows as a secretor. Reason I say that is that I read somewhere that if you have celiac that you shouldn't be surprised if your secretor status is a nonnie. I have seen many as secretors so you are not alone.

Also, sometimes neutrals could be avoids for you if your body does not respond positively. I found out for sure the other day that butter and ghee don't like me. Even though it is on my neutral list, it will now go on my avoid list.

I am sure I am an O. I remember doing the test in high school and saying, "everybody wants MY blood!", as a way of remembering I am a universal donor. Then to be absolutely sure when I started BTD, I ordered the kit and typed it again.

I know a lot of my dietary restrictions are due to the poor state of my digestive tract and I am hoping at some point in the future, I may actually be able to eat like other Os. For now, my diet is much much more resctrictive than a nonnies. Laura and I exchange notes -- she is an A but we have almost identical diets at this point in our healing.

I won't focus on what I can't eat since that sort of negative thinking is actually detrimental and on the bright side, what I can eat is a much shorter list so less typing  ;)

turkey cod salmon ahi tuna
occaisional buffalo occaisional lamb -- only ground, cooked separately and rinsed with lots of very hot water before adding to recipes -- gallbladder issues are the problem with the saturated fats in these

collards kale chard squashes pumpkin lettuces carrots broccoli artichokes beets
garlic is back on the list  ;D  ;D onions, no

almonds walnuts macadamias pine nuts pumpkin and flax seeds

olive oil, above nut oils, grape seed oil

blueberries cherries pears in moderation
bananas only for nut breads, 1 per loaf, due to Candida

I think that's it... so many food intolerances.  ::)

I recognize the lifestyle!  I also have narrowed down what I can eat to a relatively small and consistent group of foods.  They are the ones that leave me feeling satistfied, nourished and comfortable.  I can deviate occasionally but not for long. :-)

Have you tried Glutamine for your gut health.  It is recommended for O's in the Encyclopedia, and I took it with good results at one period in my life also:
"Helps with nerve transmission, can be soothing to the gut, serves as a source of fuel for cells lining the intestines, . peptic ulcer, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease."

It's always been very hard for me to describe how I feel when I know my liver is getting sluggish and/or stressed.  I just know.  Let's see . . . My eyes feel red and irritated, and my vision gets blurry.  My abdomen is uncomfortable, not pain exactly, but just not right.  My bowels feel like they don't empty enough when I have a bowel movement.  I tend toward emotional and energetic sluggishness, maybe even feeling a bit despressed.

You wondered how the Chanca Piedra helped:  I take 1 cap three times a day on an empty stomach until I feel a lot better, and then I stop until my symptoms bother me again.  I have not experimented yet to see if I take it longer, then maybe the symptoms won't return.

My vision clears...a lot!  My eyes are less red, my gut and liver feel more comfortable.  I sleep better.  My mood is light and energetic.  When I have a bowel movement, it is large and thorough.

I did the flush one time, last year.  I guess it worked ok, but it gave me horrible flashbacks to when I took chemo and I felt so horrible.  When I drank the flush stuff, I lay awake half the night, feeling half nauseous, and just in general, not nice.  I know it was mostly mental, but it's still real for me.

My "stones" were whitish, and about the size of lentils.  I honestly don't know if they were stones or just the combo of the olive oil with bile and cholesterol.  I guess I felt somewhat better afterwards, but not tremendously, and it's easier for me to just use herbs right now.

That could change in the future though.

I also feel that way.  Sometimes the natural cures are more stressful than the condition.  I know a lot of people do many flushes a year and don't consider them stressful at all.  But for me, it's stressful, and therefore, I tend to not be inclined to do it.

I hope the chanca p. is helpful.  For me, it's a subtle herb, and seems to relieve stress, discomfort, and in general, just makes me feel more relaxed in my insides.  (How's that for a totally non-scientific description? )

Hi everyone, glad to find you here! Very unsure about the non-secretor stuff & how much of a difference it makes, especially as I have so much weight to lose (I'm 265lbs) & other health problems. Any advice very much appreciated! Also we can't get buffalo  meat in England & I find the list of beneficial foods is very restricted for us. Sorry to moan but want to get it right. Been eliminating avoid foods, but not sure what else to do to get the weight loss & healing I need so much. Been very upset coz I keep having wheat binges & it makes my joints hurt so much as well as making me horrible to live with.. Thanks for any help or support.

avoiding those avoids is a very good start.

find substitutes for all you have been accustomed to eating, and watch frequency guidelines of any given food group.

everything will fall in place as soon as you start walking! )

Hello LLL,
I'm also a non-secretor, and I salute you for getting your secretor status tested.  It can make a very big difference for those who are dealing with chronic health problems or weight problems.  Secretors are less sensitive to avoids in some ways than us nonnies.  However, once you get the hang of it and Really eat for your blood type and secretor status, you will notice very big improvements.  

In many ways, I'm happy to find out that I'm a nonnie, because when I thought I was a secretor, I ate quite a few avoids because I thought it didn't matter so much.  Now that I'm a nonnie, I Know it matters, and I know I don't have any room for carelessness.  I encourage you to do whatever it takes to stop eating all avoids, if you really want to be healthy and pain-free and reach your goal weight.

Thanks for encouraging messages! Have family & friends coming to stay from tomorrow to Easter Monday so will make a proper start then.. Will read these threads whenever I can to keep up my resolve! Hard to believe I really will halve my weight by eating right for my type.. One further question, where can I find information for my nonnie status. Haven't found anything in the Eat Right book - have I missed something? Only through finding this forum did I learn about Secretors/nonnies, so not at all sure that I'm even doing the avoid thing right yet! Any help very welcome..  Having beef steak with beneficial green & other veg for dinner now, will look in again later (now 8.20pm BST)

Hi, LLL -- Welcome to the BTD forums!

Actually, I believe there is something about the secretor / non-secretor distinction in ER4YT, but it's just a brief overview somewhere toward the end of the book (maybe in an appendix).  I would look up the page number for you, but (as people here may be tired of hearing me say) my brother has borrowed my copy.  I believe the British edition is somewhat different from the American one, anyhow.

Lola's right, LR4YT has more details -- but ER4YT has all the basics, and you can get virtually all of the details right here on this web site.  (About the only thing I can think of that really isn't covered here is the "Tiers," but that system has not been worked out for non-secretors yet, only for secretors, so that doesn't matter for you or me.)

Have you checked the non-secretor food ratings on Typebase?  (There's a "button" at the top of this page.)  A lot of nonnies who have only ER4YT just compare the listings in the book to what's on Typebase, and mark any differences right in their book.

Just recalling what Dr. D and some of your fellow O's have said -- if you have a carb craving (for example, if you feel a "wheat binge" coming on), eat some protein right away.  I believe some O's also say it helps to eat a grapefruit, or a fruit salad made of only grapefruit and apples.  The consensus seems to be that O nonnies benefit by eating more fruit than grain.

LLL -- Have you actually had your secretor status tested?  Or are you assuming you're a nonnie, based on some of your food problems?  Those could be two separate issues -- for example, some secretors are simply allergic to soy.

Several people here on the forums have been certain that they were nonnies, only to have their test come back marked "secretor."

Hi Carol, had blood tested (at great expense!) at a private lab in London. Learned that I'm MM - haven't a clue what that means - but according to ER4YT book I don't need to worry about it.. Not lost any weight yet though, no idea why not.

LR4YT indicates that type O MM should eat less dairy, and eat primarily Tier 1 beneficial vegetables and fruits.

JUST FOUND OUT I'M A NONNIE!
After 3+ years on BTD I became curiouser and curiouser about my secretor status. I struggled with many health issues that being A compliant helped, but often craved more meat. Decided to cut out nonnie A avoids without adding the tomatoes, bananas etc. Had already stopped most wheat except when eating out, then eliminated the sugar, wow, an immediate improvement. The most noticable was my clear skin, no rosecea. Had the secretor test and confirmed NONNIE. Still struggling with the dairy issues. Also more closely following the food list in Health Series for Arthritis. Agree with many on the nonnie board about being/feeling different than others. I'm am INFP (10% of poputation), left-handed (10%) and non-secretor (20%)...Diane

There are varying statistics, of course, but INFP's... from what I have found (as I am one also  :K)) make up only 1-2% of the population.
