BTD Forums  /  Testimonials  /  Doing a combo of BTD B and Atkins
Posted by: Henriette Bsec, Wednesday, September 21, 2005, 7:40am
So here I am -an old.... BTD with lots of experience and still I really find it difficult to stay on a 100 % btd - maybe it is my B´ness ?

However all this talk about ketosis and low carb got me wondering IF I could do something similar. >I KNOW that I really need to watch my bread if I want to loose weight- but after a summer with a slightly "laissez faire" way of dealing with my diet it was clear I needed to do something.
So 2 weeks ago I started a combo of Atkins and BTD

Typically day:

Breakfast

2 eggs a bit of butter or cream
a little bit red pepper
tea and water

Midmorning

50 gram of mozerella cheese
coffe with a drop of cream.
Water

Lunch

small portion of romaine or spinach and
100-150 gr of turkey or fish( cod or salmon)
Water

Afternoon

Green tea
50 gram cheese ( different types)
water

Dinner

Small portion salad with olive oil and vinegar
a little broccoli
Lamb or beef steak 100-150 grams
garlic butter or some cream based sauce
Water

AND what can I say?
The first two days I did crave chocolate and fruit. THe 3 th day I felt ROTTEN
Like I was getting the flue, fever, headaches etc so tired! I went to bed and slept 11 hours!!!!!!
Woke up peed dark orange urine and felt so good - full of energy. NO hunger NO crarvings -but really smelly acetone breath :-(

The first week I lost 2,7 kg and 3 cm at my waist and 1 cm at my hips.

The second week I have lost around 1 lg- but 2 more cm at my waist and my face look less chubby.
However I was a bit disapointed that it was only 1 kg. Which is really silly because before this experience I would have been delighted to loose just o.5 kg pr week! AND I had cheated- had some nuts the other day and 1 glas of wine.....

I haven´t had any bad affect - no constipation or...SO It must be fine for a B as well.

Everytime I feel like really cheating I think about that 3d day NO way am I going back there.
I havn´t done any exercise btw- so It should improve when I strat to do more cycling etc.

I plan to slowly to interduce more GOOD B beneficials like more veggies, yoghurt, nuts fruits and off course the good grains.
BUT I´ll do it slow because I realized that even eathing a good B diet you really could mess up your amount of both good and bad sugar.

Like:
white ricepops with cranberries.

Some dry fruits in the mdmorning.

Sandwich with cheese and lots of carrots, red peppers and grapes
Apple juice

Appels and grapes for tea

and baked swwet potatoes and pineapplechutney - maybe some salmon

There you go !!all perfectly fine B food but really high in carbs and only a good idea if you want to stay at your current weight.

I don´t think atkins/ low carb will work for everybody but it seesms easier for me to control my diet when I think about the amount of especially bread , sugar and white starch.

Congratulations, Henriette!

It is a fabulous feeling, when ketosis kicks in, isn't it? (Especially after that icky 3. day! ;))

Looking at your meal-plan I maybe would suggest a little less cheese and a litte more vegetables. Oh, and exercise is absolutely a good idea. (sais the ever inactive Poly! ::) ;))

Just be sure to ease back the carbs in your diet according to the carb-ladder. Take your time.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks Poly
I do think I get a bit more veggies- since I find it boring just to eat salad.... However about the cheese thing I do follow the max of 115 gr pr day don`t I ?- I am a B :-D

I cheated a bit last weekend had a bit of macadamia nuts- was going absolutely mad after something crunchy
I should have been around 20 grams of carb that day ... but I was wondering if I still messed up.?

I have tried a few of the atkins bar etc - but they are really an avoid for a B- all the soy - I don´t really like the taste either. To little chocolate too much soy and sweetener.

I remembered you made some homemade chocolate???

I was thinking about dark cococa powder, butter and sweetener like Xylitol ( I´ve got something It really taste good compaired to most sweeteners) and on the web page xylitol should be ok!

BTW I found a chocolatebar made with maltitol ( like atkins use ) But it tasted far BETTER- It contained something like netcarbs 5 grams - I ate 1/2 and felt fine. I know however that maltitol is properbly made out of corn ? so -but it was worth it ..... I STILL MISS CHOCOLATE but i don´t CRAVE it.

Yep I´ll get back on the bike- I just wanted to see if it worked without exercise.

Don't think you messed up terribly, when you wnt "nuts"! ;D I remember people on the Atkins board eating nuts on Induction, and really enjoying it like their special treat. (I don't like nuts (especially walnuts ICK!) - only avoid'y nuts like peanuts and pistacios - so I've given up on nuts all together and didn't eat them on Atkins either.) If you don't have a LOT og weight to lose, it's OK to eat nuts every now and then.

I too ate Atkins' bars, and liked them pretty well. I ate them at work in stead of the ever present cake. ½ a bar in the morning - ½ a bar in the afternoon. I had one the other day (I found it back in my locker at work), and it wasn't as tasty as I remembered them....

Yes I made homemade Christmas chocolates. I found some delicious sugar free chocolate in Føtex (and now they've got it in Netto also). I also made my own marzipan with ground almonds, egg yolks and sweetener. Tasted great, IMO. Oh, and I made some chocolate truffles... Mmmmmhh...! (I can email you the recipes, if you like) I really didn't feel like I was suffering during Christmas. (even lost 2 pounds during Christmas and New Years!!!)
You're right, that the sugarfree chocolate contains maltitol, which I believe Edna told me was made from corn. I'm not sure how/if that will influence on your health. I still eat the sugar free chocolate from time to time (last week I covered some dried apple-slices with it - yummmmmmmmm...!!! :P) It's of course not as easy to melt and cover thigs with as Odense's chocolate-buttons (the sugarfree chocolates are much longer to harden, and melt more easily when you touch the finished chocolates), but it tastes so much better, IMO.

Btw, I found some organic dark chocolate with dried cherries, when i was in England this weekend. Hm, let's just say I won't overeat it... :B :P ;D

Hi Henriette,

Congratulations!!!!!!!  Ketosis IMO is as much about timing as anything ... the season we're now in (Fall) is the usual time to gain extra fat for the winter ... so expect sweets & grains to be especially attractive!

Rather than repeat some of the stuff on foods maybe I'll relate some of the peripheral ideas that will make your ketosis-trip healthier ... and easier.  #1 - ketosis is a many-month venture, so don't fret too much about weight loss over a single week (even two).  #2 - sleep is extremely important (even more than exercise IMO) - TS Wiley's 'Lights Out'.  To bed as night falls(no sun) and only rise with the sun.  Keep your sleeping room with no light at all ... not even the red LED-lights that display the time on many modern alarm clocks.  #3 - instead of aerobic types of exercise ... great for summertime, sweating, peaking thyroid-adrenals ... try isotonics instead.  It is easiest of extra-cheap ... simply push pull against something immoveable ... a wall. a doorframe ... on and on.  Press hard for a count of 8 then release.  Do this many times each day .... even squeeze a ball in your hand ... over and over.

Hi poly
Would you like to share some of your chocolate ideas with us all?
We are entering that period of the year that I go mad on chocolate.
I will be very pleased about the truffles.
Thanks Ion

Of course, ion. I'll be happy to. I'll have to rummage a little through my Christmas-stuff, though, so give me a few days and I'll post them in the recipe-section, OK?! :)

John and Henriette, I've decided to do a winter-ketosis again this year. It felt so good last year, and this year I'm sure it will feel even better, when I'm on BTD as well. I've started taking chlorella now, as you recommended, John, and I'll continue to do so until snow-fall (or late November/early December - whatever comes first) and then start ketosis.

So I'll be joining you in the "ketosis-club" soon, Henriette!

Hi John - you are right - however I needed to grab the change when my energy was up  and the fact that I feel very motivated NOW. I am not sure I would be able to do the 1st fase in november or december I am very much influenced by the low lights in winther here- however I feel good - YES I did want to taste my last fresh fig or all the lovely pears my mum got but I didn´t and it is really only the old chocolate ghost :-D that moves around. Not the grains.

BY the way I was a bit surpriced that I already went into ketosis after 3 days as a B I had expected it to take more time. However HOW do you know (If you don´t use strips) that you still are in ketosis??
- I just feel too good. My breath is still abit smelly in the morning but that is about it....

About sleeping and lights I really can´t rise with the sun .I have to get up at 6 and the sun rise at almost 7.
I know it is getting worse- but I´ll make sure to get enough sleep.

Chocolate recipes... yum can´t wait.

I have decide to do 1 week more of fase 1. I was just a bit impation. I do want to loose 20 kg ! Poly. I could be satisfied with 10-15 but I have decided that I want to get back to the weight I had just before E was born.

Good to hear about the nuts- I am not a NUT person but a few added the chrunch from cookies and carrots that I was missing.

I really think it is the soy in the products that makes me ....
Got another of the choclate bar today it had no soy -but lots of cocoa, cream, butter and coffe it was really good - it was the last the shop had:-(
Uhm cherry chocolate I remember some nice stuff when I lived in Dublin....

Report afte 3 weeks!
Well weird enough I havn´t lost weight - at least in kg
- BUT when I measure myself- another 2 cm has gone from my waist this week- 1 cm on my arms and 2 cm around my hips !!! Weird!
Then I thought - I have had a glas of red wine saturday and sunday. I did eat a bit of low carb chocolate cake ( 3 net carbs a slice) so I have been doing more than 20 g pr day- more something like 25 grams - however would that explain why I put on  500 grams ???
WELL I worked physically hard all weekend- MOVED and SPLIT tons of wood- so maybe I gained some muscles ?
I worked nonstop 10 hours both saturday and sunday- and I have been exercising more in general.
BUT I am really smaller than last week :-D

Excellent!!!

As long as you're losing inches - and that's the most important thing anyway - everything is fine.

The wine won't make you gain per se, it just stops fat burning for a while. You're in your third week, so that's OK. First two weeks are the most important, and to concider as a sort of cleanse.

Hang in there! (clap)

Just wanted to make my last report for a while:
This week I lost 1,5 kg- so I lost the o,5 kg I gained in muscle last week and another 1kg at least my measures tell me that ;-)
Any how this week I cut down on meat/fish- went from 2 serving of 6 oz to 2 servings of 4-5 oz more my ordinary size.
I have had some ricotta cheese.
1 serving of fruit  pr day( plums, red grapefruit, pears- they are so yummi in my mums garden)
I even had a few slices of very corse wholemeal bread ( spelt)
AND I still LOST weight - I properbly had about 30-50 gr of carb pr day- about 90 gr protein.
AND I  FEEL REALLY GOOD !!!!
I still need to loose about 15 kg - but I know for sure I can and will- I´ll just continue to put B beneficial food back in my diet-
I dont crave sugar and white wheat bread any more- only some good chocolate and thats OK

Excellent! You've accomplished exactly what is intended with the Induction-phase. Cleared out the "wrong" carbs from your diet and your body. Well done!  :D
