Hi. I'm new to the diet, and am curious about what made some of you start the BTD.  What are some of the benefits that you've found?

I decided to start it because I read that women who are Type B who get chronic urinary tract infections have a problem with lacking a blood type antigen (or something like that), which allows bacteria to stick to the bladder walls.  This led me to recognize the scientific basis of the diet.  I have only started it over the past month (not always compliant, though!), but notice that when I stick to it, I have more energy. I haven't yet determined if it will reduce the frequency of UTI's, although I've noticed some of the other threads indicate that it can help.

How do you respond to people who think the BTD is flaky or a fad or unscientific? Are there times when you doubt whether you should follow the diet?

I've always been interested in nutrition and health.  The BTD concept fascinated me, but when I read through the BTD encyclopedia and saw the relationships of blood type to illnesses I realized that it was only sensible for there to be a food relationship as well.  I'd always wondered why, during the flu, typhoid, or smallpox epidemics, did some people go unaffected even while aiding the ill, some died, some developed a mild case, and some never close to affected people still got the disease.  The BTD connected and answered the questions in a reasonable manner as no other explanation had done.  So, it was like an "if this, then that" logical reasoning that led me to try and stick with the BT Diet philosophy.  

I know it's making a difference in my life and I tell people nearly every day about this diet and give them whatever info they want.  Several people are now trying it to see for themselves what a difference it will make for them.

I had often been frustrated by an inability to lose those last 10-15 lbs, mostly around the middle. I mentioned it to my naturopath and he suggested this diet. He said that it was the only diet he knew that everyone of his patients had lost weight on. Now that I have tried it, the mid-section has shrunk, flatulence has disappeared, and I consume fewer calories in a day, yet do not feel hungry, and have more energy. Oh yes, I am also sleeping better as well.

Like jul, I also had gas issues, I bet it was the reduction in wheat intake that resolved it.

I have had digestive issues and IBS for a long time.
Nuts give me constipation and beans give me diarreha, gas and bloating.
Wheat and dairy make me very tired.
So I try to stick with beneficial Meat, fish fruits and vegetables, as an O nonnie should...

I started because I used to fall asleep 20 minutes after dinner every night (puts a big strain on a marriage) and all my hair fell out within a matter of weeks and I'm trying to see if it would regrow....slowly but surely it's starting to...Not that i really want it to though. My grilfriend said she would leave me if it did

Because I kept getting fatter every time I tried the so called healthy diet of low fat- lots of chicken, pasta and..... diet. It simply didn´t work for me and I kept getting ear infections.
I really didn´t start first: my O kid started first - all the time she ate a natural O diet if I let her - Once the milk and wheat went away no more constipation and ezema for her!!! It made me curieous since I was delighted to find out I was a B - because I felt B like.
I am still overweight- but I have lost weight, my bloodpressure is perfect I havn´t had a single earinfection since I started (more than 6 years)and my allergy is almost gone.

My O daughter has this week proven that the O diet is the best :-D:
Normally she doesn´t do O diet 100% - but the last 7 days she has( no grains- no sugar ) due to I am doing a combo of B and atkins(I´ll tell you more later) She HAS been doing more exercise than normal BUT she has lost 4 pounds!!! all her babyfat on her belly and her "breastfeeding" cheeks has gone- I looked at her this morning and she looked like a beutiful slim teen - Normally I would say she slender but kicking the last grains out made the difference!!!

Because I felt sick and exhausted every day and my health was getting worse - slowly getting better and better...

And this diet added to what I had figured out for myself and has added a lot of missing pieces!

Dear Gail,
I am a daughter of an oncologist so  I grew up interested in health and nutrition sciences. I suspected to be celiac and I was denied attention on this issue (wheat and gluten intolerance) and severe low stomac acidity.
All what I have read on Cortisol and other hormonal problems, as for digestion and allergies, mucus and recurrents colds, otitis, sinusitis it's well backed with scientific evidence (Physician papers and magazines reporting their research and studies) and and in my case all clinical tests show as following Dr D and BTD it's right.
Have I enough reasons to be compliant as I can or not ?
Wishing  you all the best this is what I say to my friends or relatives!

Ever since I graduated from High School, I have been interested in Health and Nutrition, I have had acne since I was a teenager and wanted to get rid of it naturally, I tried many diets, but none seemed to "work", I came across the BTD shortly after I married my husband and it just made so much sense. It confirmed alot of suspicions that I had over the years such as beef was good for me. I had tried vegetarianism for 6 months and during that time, I had no energy and I got really constipated and my hair started falling out. Even when I gave up vegetarianism I still avoided meat as often as possible, because it was "bad" for you, but when I ate a hamburger I would have a bowel movement the next day after being consipated for days eating only vegtables.

I still like to read other health books, but I always come back to the BTD because it works!!

I've always been interested in health and nutrition as well.  My mom asked if I'd read BTD.  I picked up a copy of it and found that my natural inclinations (I HATE tomato sauce with a passion and stopped eating red meat two years ago just because I couldn't stand it anymore and have always disliked milk, yet love plain yogurt...) were contained within the A diet.  

I started reading more about my beneficials (I can HAVE coffee!) and my neutrals (I can HAVE a piece of chocolate now and again?!!) and realized that this is how I was naturally eating most of the time.  By eliminating my avoids, I have eliminated horrible gas and stomach pains (and man, do they come back with a vengenance with I eat them...)  

I think of diet like I do religion...people know I am spiritual, but I don't go around trying to convince people that they must think like I do...people know that health and nutrition is an interest of mine, but I have no need to defend what I choose to eat to anyone.

I found LR4YT and ER4YT as suggested reading on my new homeopathic Dr.s web page. It has taken me a while to trust that this way of eating is the one that will finally work for me. I usually jump in with both feet at any hope of weight loss especially if it is suppose to be healthy. But after a lifetime of disappointments I am slower to accept such great promises. I am about 30 lbs overweight.

What is fascinating to me is that I find I am in some kind of denial about my health. I thought I was pretty healthy, that is what my Dr told me.  :P I have come to accept chronic constipation, achy body, permanently stuffy nose, and frequent colds and flu as normal. Now I wonder why.  ??)  I guess it is because I tried everything I could think of and nothing worked.

I have only followed the BTD for about a month and have not been really compliant. But I feel so much better already (and I've lost 5 lbs  :) ). I am trying to at least not eat wheat. The more I read what it has done for people the more compliant I get. It is like my brain is slowly clearing up.  8)

I started on BTD to loose weight. I have done that , but have also improved general health as well as 100% eliminating acidic stomach and reflux - that was an added bonus.

Thanks Moomers for your thoughts.  I also have similar symptoms, and would like to lose 20 lbs. I also get frequent UTI's and migraines.  I am hoping that this diet will help, and that weight loss would be a nice additional benefit!  :)

Hi Gail, I started ER4YT on September 4th, after being approached by a friend who

told me she stated eating right for her blood type and she was feeling great since

starting.  She is very fit and looked to me to be eating fine, however she wasn't.  At

the time she told me I had only been back in the county for 3 weeks...I was in

Africa.  When I returned from Africa I had a desire to live a more healthy lifestyle

which would include eating right and exercising.  I felt bloated and fat, and always

tired.  I started by doing the Warriors Diet which I didn't know that's what I was doing

until I read it on the message board last night.  I ate lots of fruit allday from morning

until mid-afternoon and then at night I would eat a full course dinner.  Dinner

consisted of me alternating chicken or fish and a veg and starch usually 2 slices of

wheat bread.  I also began to jog daily which I absolutely hated (I love it now...I'm up

to 2-3 miles a day).  I now understand that eating that way wasn't necessarily right for

me because "B" stands for balance and that really wasn't a balanced diet.

When my friend told me about BTD I immediately went to the bookstore and

skimmed throw ER4YBT (couldn't afford to buy it right then) and purchased the cook

book and the B supplement book.  I was serious about making a lifestyle change.  I

was shocked to read all the avoids that I should not be eating but was.  Since starting

the diet I haven't eaten any avoids, I have only eaten from the beneficial and neutral

columns and I feel great.  I weighed myself today and so far have lost 4 pounds.  I

love BTD and I'll continue it for life. ;D

I started because a friend of mine had been doing it and she lost about 30 pounds in 6 months and was bouncing of the walls with energy.  She also said that most of her allergies went away and she had to take up running to get rid of excess energy (!).  Another friend of mine adopted a similar diet when her allergist diagnosed her with celiac disease and a corn allergy.

I have always had a lot of allergies, plus fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome for the past 12 years. My brother and I always hated the smell of any corn product, especially popcorn.  In middle school, I was being tested for allergies and the doctor asked my mom if I had any funny reactions to any food, including not liking the smell of them. My mom said that both kids hated the smell of corn, and he tested both of us and we both reacted. In high school, it became clear that I was lactose intolerant, so I stopped drinking milk.

So...when I started talking to these friends, the first friend said, "Ya know...you must have type O blood."  When I asked her how she knew that, she told me about ER4YT.   I tried it for awhile and everything improved.  In the stress of trying to finish my degree I kinda fell off,  but have restarted and I feel much better again. I'm just trying to take it one day at a time now and think about how much better I feel.

The way I respond to people depends on the person I'm responding to.  If they seem open, I will talk with them about what this diet has done for me personally and also discuss/debate the science behind it.  If they seem totally set in stone with their opinion and just wanting to criticize, I have learned to just adopt a zen-like 'tude *lol* and not even waste my energy trying to get through because it is banging your head on a brick wall and who needs that aggro?

I'm just so glad and grateful that I found a diet that really bestows such good health to me and that is sustainable for me.  If someone criticizes it and is not open to hearing anything other than their own opinion, I just smile internally and think about my health and realize that it isn't my job to make anyone understand something or educate them about it if they don't want educating *lol*.

I've been on it since September of 1997...wow!  I just realized something!  On 9/22/2005 it will be 8 years!  Holy guacamole that is two presidential terms!  Wow...I've been on the diet since back when the USA was recognizable to me!  But I digress.  ANYWAY:  I've been on this thaaang since 1997 and I can honestly say that I've never doubted that it was the right thing for me.  I did go off it once for 8 months (long story), but even then, I never really doubted that I should be on it or that I was a d*mn fool for willfully going off of it.  I just had a "rebel rebel" moment.  And, boy, once I DID go off of it, I sure knew that I should be back ON it!  But once you go over to the "dark side", it is hard to get back to solid ground again.  On the very positive side, I learned a lot during that haitus that really sunk in and that is precious, such as:

1.  Don't do this again, dork.
2.  Compliance = good.  Non-compliance = BAD!
3.  I learned a lot about how to pull yourself back once you get into the grips of carbohydrate addictions run amok.

So, it is all good (except that I've just spent the last few years SINCE then trying to re-lose all the significant amount of weight I had lost and then gained back doing the "rebel rebel" thing), but the short answer to your question is NO, I never doubted that I should be on the BTD.  I have always known that the BTD was right for me.  It is just that I once willfully chose to do what was wrong for me and then, boy howdy, was the point really driven home to me just how wrong NOT being on the BTD is for me!  It was so good for me to go there, in a way, because it was a trip down memory lane into Pre-BTD Land that I never want to take again, yet going there made me know that, ya know?  It made me REALLY appreciate the BTD.  It also made me realize that I don't have much of a choice:  I can either be a carb-addicted fat whale who is unhealthy, has no energy, is in the grips of cravings, and has a personality more volatile than Mount Pinataubo, or I can be a steady-as-she-goes, in balance, healthy person, who will always be addicted to certain carbs but who can be "in recovery", to borrow wording from 12-step programs that really applies here.  I look at me being on the BTD as me being "in recovery".   A dear friend of mine called it my "food sobriety".  And just as an alcoholic never wants to take that first drink and return to some kind of lengthy bender again, I never want to go willfully into Avoid Land again.  Been there, done that.  Got the tee-shirt.

I started the BTD in order to lose about 20lbs - which I have - and to overcome infertility - I'm not pregnant yet - but hope to be someday soon.  I have also seen a lot of other health improvements that I wasn't expecting - less gas problems, no constipation as long as I don't eat wheat, no stuffy nose or allergy type problems as long as I don't eat dairy - things like that which were added benefits.

I was referred to a naturopath through a company health program for sleep problems.  I've also had a long term struggle with weight control as an adult.  The naturopath recommended the BTD as he does for all his patients.  The naturopath left town after only a few visits, but I continued with BTD on my own.  I had a pretty major insomnia issue resolve pretty quickly and have had other benefits such as more normal bowels.  The weight is still a struggle, but I'm not wonderful about compliance.  I will stick with BTD because it just makes a lot of sense to me.  I also know that I could lose the weight with better compliance, but for some reason, the motivation is just not there consistently for me.  I'm blessed with very good health, besides the weight.

I heard about it and thought it was quackery. I was 6 mos. pregnant with my 4th (of 5) child and was having serious diarrhea, gas and abdominal pain. Three months later I was still having problems. I ran across Dr. D's 1st book. I read it and "experimented upon the word". I pulled all bread products from my and voila! I felt so much better. I later came to find out I had Celiac and corn allergies. From there the rest is history.  I am pretty much compliant dues to celiac and corn, although a large milk chocolate bar can be tempting. I won't even try to address my other health issues-there just is not enough space.

Believe it or not, this is in summary form. :o

In October 1994 I become determined to know how a human being can reach its greatest potential.

In December 1998 I read a very weird book. I can not recall the title or author. It believed a human should rely on its own. God does not exist (Sort of Ain Rand’s philosophy). It proposed the Atkins diet.  This was my introduction to the idea that food can enhance performance. While I thought on the issue of God I decided to try Atkins and observe if nutrition has a role in enhanced performance.

I had worked for 10 years in the strategy/marketing department of leading food/beverage multinationals and this issue had never crossed my mind (other than the awareness of the benefits of a fast boost from caffeine).

Annemarie Colbin writes in http://www.foodandhealing.com, “Once we know how deeply diet affects us, we can never again claim ignorance about the power of food.” Atkins made me conclude this as it made a significant difference on me.

In February 1999 my search for human perfection (or human improvement) took a new slant. Off I went on the search for the ideal nutritional program.

In June 2000 at a luncheon at my mothers a friend and I were scavenging for the protein and veggies. I was practicing Atkins again and she was practicing BTD. She said she would give me a copy of the list but never did. I did not look for the book as I thought it was the nutritional regime of her religious group. I had not been sold.

In June 2002 I was practicing vegetarianism and, feeling horrid cravings, I went into a book shop to find an alternative diet. Saw Spanish version of ER4YT, remembered my friend, and got it.

The first month was heaven on earth. I knew I had found the ideal plan. I fell of the wagon and since, it has been hell on earth.

Well, I am not used to making sacrifices and if I lived in my own little island it would be wonderful but, like most of us, I live in avoid land. Often times I feel so tired of avoiding the mines.

I am healthy, at least I feel like it, and with a healthy weight so I constantly wonder if the benefits acquired by a nutritional plan are worth the effort of compliance.

At least, lack of consistent compliance has led me into searching for other nutritional plans. And, guess what? I am still here; I always come back, even if it is with my non compliant outfit. When ever I manage at least two days of compliance I am back in heaven.

In my main search - human perfection, I am testing the hypothesis that it is the union with God which makes us perfect. The second hypothesis is that Jesus Christ is the best way to union with God.

Reading the life of saints (Christian and non Christian), I have observed they all ate quite humbly. And this is my main dilemma at the moment.

Do I need to spend so many resources (time and money) on food to reach union with God? Can I reach union with God better on a diet based on bread and water? If only it could be essene and mineral water

Perhaps it is my addiction to wheat that keeps me stuck on this torturous wheel. I can not think straight yet, I can not live without it  >:( :'(

Hi Isa,

Thank you. Yes I try getting satisfaction from the brain but the pleasure obtained through wheat still beats all natural high. Ahhh conditioning! I have been compliant 4 days. Today I am not. Now I am in ecstasy but wait till tonight. My poor husband! Still learning and I know I will get there. I shall fight all my previous conditionings to death >:(

I hope I do not judge anymore, well sometimes… you know, I am human. I have realized I am not in possession of the truth so with other points of view, I rather discuss, so I can learn, than argue. Unfortunately, most people argue so I can not discuss.

Just to illustrate the point, Chinese philosophy lead me to Hinduism, and Hinduism led me to Christ. I get great peace from reading Buddhist works and have learned greatly from faithful Moslems or reading the Koran. All points of view have their value. All have helped me grow and understand better.

The same with nutrition, I learned the advantage of low carbs from Atkins, I really do better if I do not have my fruit after meals as I learned from the Montignac Method, I like to combine Carbs/fat/protein as done in The Zone but I prefer eating only 3 times a day as I understand is advocated by the leptin method. Most of all, I like to avoid avoids. All this sounds good. If only I could maintain it in a somewhat consistent manner. It is generally wheat, milk, and coffee all day long. No wonder at the end of the day I am so confused.

Which takes me to the “Wheat Rant” thread where I will continue on this non judging issue as a reply to your latest post there and Cybertoothtigress’s. But first. Some work.

Well… shortly after I posted on Sept. 13th a Little Star shone showing me the way. The message from the Little Star was: “The answers my friend are blowing in the wind.”

Since the Little Star is a spiritual friend I took the message seriously and remained receptive.

Fascinating! Sometimes my last reading at night is the passage of the Gospel which will be read in mass the next day. That evening the Gospel was Luke 7, 31-35  “.... For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, `He hath a devil,’ The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, ´Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!’ But wisdom is justified of all her children.”  :o

Fortunately or perhaps unfortunately (as it would have been clearer) it was not Mathew15, 17-18 “Whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught. But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man.”  ;D

Certainly there is an answer here. Do not know how others take it. I have since been thinking/meditating on it and I am arriving at the conclusion that it does not make a difference to God.

My experience is that what is important for God is how much love one gives.

But what does the last sentence mean? “But wisdom is justified of all her children”

I think that when people say that BTD (or a lot of things) are "flaky or a fad or unscientific", the truth is those are not the real problems.  The real problem is almost always that they are afraid to change or too comfortable to change. Plus, there is so much information in our society that we are bombarded all the time with "Do this" or "Eat that", and our innate filter has to process it somehow.  Don't be too hard on others, because most people have to see it lived first before they are willing to try it even for a week.

Susana-Wisdom is personified in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes, so maybe it is a reference to that.

Simply put, I started the diet because I'm fat :) And my best friend is getting married, and I do not want to be the fat bridesmaid :S

My mom brought the book home from her homeopath. Upon a summary of the diet, my mom and I observed that inadvertantly, I had been the one following the diet the closest in our family, and I was the "skinniest" (Family of Four overweight O's) So that picqued my interest; I read the book, decided it made sense, and started.

I haven't been able to add in the exercise yet, nor am I giving up vinegar and I eat a lot of chocolate... but in about three weeks, I've lost an inch and a half off my waist. No exercise, lots of chocolate, and I still manage to lose inches? I love this diet. (And yes, you techies out there, I plan to incorporate the exercise, and limit my chocolate intake, but the pool doesn't open until October, and I've at least switched to dark chocolate which has less milk...)

Six years ago, I gave birth to my third child. I was pretty slim when I got married. During the pregnancies, I gained some weight, but I always managed to lose most of the weight I gained. But the third and the last pregnancy was quite different. During the whole pregnancy, I was working, and since I'm a software developer, I work by sitting for hours, no exercise at all. Six months after the birth, I started to work again. I consumed quite a large amount of snacks by black tea while at work. Most of them were wheat products. One day at work, I noticed that there was an earthquake outside, and then realized that the earthquake was inside my body! They carried me to hospital, I was so frightened and hopeless. That was my first panic attack, but I didn't know it then. I also had serious gas problems.

It was getting impossible to lose weight, I tried to start a diet several times, and never succeded, I now understand why : Whenever I started a diet, I used to put chicken, couscous(cracked wheat-I believed that it was better than rice!), tomatoes, olive in my food list. I used to have lentils quite often. These are all avoids of type B list of BTD!.

One day I decided to spend alot of money and try a famous weight-loss product packet. I heard about it from a friend who was a sales representative of the product. Before sparing a lot of money for the packet-and I had to spend that every month until death!-, I decided to ask some of my friends about the product,  in case they heard about or tried it. That was where my life changed. One of my friends then suggested me BTD. He was so kind, and soft, and calm, and helpful that I decided to try the diet. In the beginning I wasn't completely aware of the fact that BTD was not just for weight-loss, but for better health. I started the diet, periodically, gave it up, started again, since it's difficult you know to change eating habbits, and I'm on the diet with a remarkable compliancy since April, 2005.

BTD forums, very well help me to keep myself on the diet. I have no gas problems, no panic attacks(one day I had couscous in a freind's house, and that night I had a terrifying heart attack) since then, and even began to lose weight. I have chance to exercise in summer time when kids stay with my mother in another city, but during winter time,  I rush home after work, run towards the kitchen, begin to cook, wash the dishes, prepare children for sleep, and and get very tired, and cannot exercise at all.

There lies a science behind this diet. It's very logical, and I take benefits of it. My joint pain has gone, and whenever when I consume wheat, it comes back. All this can't be a coincidence, I think. Reading the forums, I see the diet works for others, too.

I have always been into health stores and foods... even as a young teenager.  As a teen, though, I  had some acne problems and weight problems, as well.  When I  grew up and lived in San Francisco, I got interested in vegetarian cooking.  I did that for 16 years.. I love that way of cooking and I prefer  vegetarian food.  

My face was still broken out!!  Also, I'm  a runner and tennis player, and I found I was always exhausted.. REALLY exhausted..

So, a friend  told me I should look into the BTD... looking for a cure, I decided to  follow it, even though I am an O , which meant a HUGE lifestyle change.

I am in heaven!  I do miss all my vegetarian cooking, but my skin is crystal clear and my weight is great without dieting ..... it was enough for me!!  I am so thankful!  The hardest  thing to give up was the coffee and sugar.  I am happy to say that  I'm doing well on that issue, too.. but it's a battle... best of luck to you.

Until a few days ago, my diet consisted of meat, vegetables, beans, some whole meal pitas occasinally, oats, fruit, fish and yogurt/skim milk. I thought I was eating pretty healthily, and was totally confused as to why I have huge amounts of trouble keeping weight off, even when doing all the "right things" calorie-wise. Also in the last 2 years I have becom increasingly fatigued, and sick, (my bloodpressure is low) so that this year I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue (for lack of other diagnosis) and pulled out of school. I went to all the doctors I could think of but they told me all my test results were normal. So a few days ago I decided I was fed up, and booked an appointment with a naturopath to get his perspective.

Long story short he said I was type A, and should start the BTD. He also said my liver was damaged (I don't drink), and that I am severely anemic, which is strange (he said) because I was eating normal amounts of meat. So that's my story.

After a few days of reading and thinking about it, I've discovered MANY things in my life which corroborate the BTD (i.e. waking up after eating beef for dinner with nausea). So it looks like I'll be here to stay! The vegetarian life is totally new to me. But it's time for a change!

I had a baby 3 1/2 mns ago and am trying to lose the baby weight plus 20 more to get to my prefered weight.  I did south beach after my first child, but just couldn't get back into it this time around.  I tried weight watchers, but didn't want to count points.  Tried just counting calories, boring and hard.  Then a friend off another board mentioned the blood type diet and so I checked it out online and found myself getting excited to try it.  So, I sent away for the books.  As I have been reading thru them the past 2 days, I can totally see the truth in it.  I completely see myself in the O blood type profile.  I HAVE to exercise or I get over stressed, cranky, tired, and just a lovely person to live with.  I LOVE to exercise, actually, and most people think I'm crazy because of it.  So, I started this lifestyle because I know that I do best on a low carb diet, I feel alot better without the added sugars in me though it is SOOO hard to get to that point where my body isn't craving it, and I see the logic in it all.

Hi All, Wizza from England. Read the book (left by a friend 2 years agao)whilst cooking. Couldn't  believe the description of  O types. Depression if they don't excercise, thrive on red meat etc... I felt as if a huge weight was lifted from me. I felt as though I had discovered myself, I was allowed to be me! It accounted for a number of my traits.  Even my karate sensei says that I'm wired up wrong, he thinks that I don't appreciate anything unless it's really hard work! Yep , that's me, I love a sweaty gi. And now I know why; I'm an O type who loves meat and salad!

I just joined and and looking forward to trying this out.  My main reason for starting is because I want to lose 30 pounds, but I'm also looking to improve my energy level, depression, and anxiety levels.  My mom has been telling me for years that changing my diet will help my depression/anxiety and that I would be able to cut back on my medication, so I guess we'll find out!  I actually enjoy exercise but my energy/motivation level often keeps me from exercising as much as I'd like.  :-/  How ironic is that??   ??)

I haven't bought the book yet, but it looks like many foods that I gravitate towards are foods that are okay for me to eat so maybe this won't be as hard as I thought.  The hardest for me I think will be staying away from milk, but I seem to remember seeing that goat milk and goat cheese is okay...?  I was also glad to see that I can drink COFFEE!!  ;D

Hi everyone, I am new to the BTD.  The reason I started, is, I have always followed a healthy diet, eating organically and trying to avoid as much rubbish as possible, and yet never feeling really well, not serious illness but low grade energy, headaches etc.  After years of this, I ended up overweight and with high blood pressure. Started to research diets on the net and when I came to the BTD I realised I was eating a lot of avoids, especially being english lots of tea. So I decided to try it.   The proof of the pudding as they say, and after gradually cutting the avoids and adding as many beneficial as possible especially breakfast, my blood pressure is now normal, and I am losing weight, but best of all I feel a lot better, so I will be sticking to the diet. My main problem right now is trying to find something to put in my coffee, cant drink it black and the soy milk we get in the uk curdles in coffee, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have always had digestive problems and after studying this site a lot and checking out the Typebase4 foods, I realized that I was eating things that could cause the problems; I also discovered the reason why I have never been able to eat things like corn. So, I have started about a month ago. I was not overweight, could have afforded a few lost pounds which came rapidly for me. I was in size 12 now in a comfortable 10. Did not do this to lose weight as I have been comfortable at a 12 because of my height. My only hope is that I don't lose anymore weight because I am older and don't want to look saggy! I love the foods and look forward to every meal, altho some things are limited. I will be sending for my secretor/nonsecretor test soon, but I am eating as a secretor right now and seem to be not having a problem. I don't want to be a nonnie! I am discovering foods that I had fogotten from youth, like fresh spinach. Yummm. Hang in there, it is well worth it. I also have a fast heartbeat issue and it seems the eating change has helped that..fingers crossed!

A friend mentioned her success (she's now off medication for a chronic health problem) and as many have stated, to feel better and lose weight.  Both of which have happened.  Almost immediately stomach problems were gone and after 10 weeks of serious compliance (along with WW accountability) I've lost almost 20 pounds ( ;D  ;D  ;D).  Sure feels good to type that!  I have had weight "issues" since I was 5 and BTD has been the easist; no major hunger attacks nor feeling deprived.

The book resonated with my logical brain (is that left or right side?) and I was surprised at how much I had already been doing.

Before the BTD (at the age of twenty-eight), I had problems with:

* Gas * IBS - constipation & diahrea rotation * Itchy Scratchy all the time * Dry Skin * Daily Headaches * Food Addiction * Bloody Cuticles * Torn Nails * Bad Breath * Depression * Anger Management Issues * Brain Fog * Pale Skin, would not tan * Fatigue * Joint Pain * Muscle Pain * Low Blood Sugar * 30 lbs overweight * Hypothyroid * Ringing Ears

I AM A NEW PERSON!!!!!!!  (age 36 now) (started BTD at age 32)

Because of severe food addictions, I had to go slow and eliminate one thing at a time.

My Remaining Problems:  Hormonal Migraines, Ringing Ears, Gingivitis and Hypothyroid

But the other problems are gone and it is well worth it.  Oh yeah, 8 more pounds to lose.  People compliment me all the time and ask me how I did it!

I started the diet 3 months ago due to several health issues.  I had recurrent urinary tract infections and bronchial inflammation.  I also have been having continual digestive problems including gas and indigestion, belching, etc.

It is my hope and prayer that this diet will improve my health in many of those ways.  I also intend to get my secretor status done soon so I may know better about my reaction to certain foods in my body.

I started about three years ago because my curiosity was piqued by some of my coworkers who were into the BTD, so I went to my local bookstore and read the section pertaining to type A at the bookstore (I've since bought the book, because I felt kind of guilty!) :B  

I've been a vegetarian for about 8 years, and was glad to have the reassurance that I was doing the right thing!  When I eliminated the avoid foods I had still been eating, I lost ten pounds without trying or stepping up my exercise routine, and my energy levels went up.

I used to get a lot of flack about the way I eat.  I now combat such harassment in two ways:  I lend them my copy of the book or I have them over for dinner.  Being a decent cook is a fine tool to have in one's arsenal! 8)

Coffee creamer notes:  Depending on the brand Kar, it helps to put the soymilk in the cup first before adding the coffee, or heating the soymilk before (time permitting or if you have a very nice person working the espresso bar).  Another way to avoid curdling is to avoid extremely light and extremely dark roast coffees, or coffees that are advertised as having a high acidity.  Coffees lower in acidity are less likely to curdle soymilk.

When I first heard about the diet, (1996-1997) I rolled my eyes and thought it was pretty crazy.  I thought I knew everything that was out there, in the alternative health arena.  And then my curosity got the better of me, and I started reading.  I soon came to realize, that Dr. Peter's work was the BEST THING to come out of the naturopathic field in a gazillion years.

When I follow the program, I have increased energy, and I lose weight.  When I don't follow it, I gain, and feel like a slug.

Recently, I started following the specific program for arthritis.  For the first five to six days, I only ate super beneficials.  By day four I noticed the majority of my joint pain was gone.

The BTD changed my life, and most of the old timers here know why.  ;D  I met the man who became my husband on the first message board, over five years ago.

so mostly see healthy clients.I became interested in ER4YT about a year ago when I was diagnoised with osteoporosis  when I had my bone density test done,I went to a naturapathatic
and she recommended the diet.I have found that if  Iconsume too much of the avoid foods I get alot of gas  in my upper chest area and generally don't feel well..Once during christmas I was invited to someone's house for chile  after a christmas staff   party,I had  the chile and sorry for it the next day,I felt miserable for two days with gas discomfort and lethargic feeling,I guess the meat and tomatoes  did not agree with me .So I have decided that I will try to stick to the diet
as much as possible . I have found that when I do follow the diet I have more energy and generally feel betteralso their are alot of things I agree with for the typeA I always enjoyed yoga
tai chi,line dancing ,not high intensity exercises and I  have been drinking  soy milk and  drink green tea  for the  some time now but I ate too much wheat progucts.now I experiment more with different type of flours.

When I first saw the book title Eat Right 4 Your Type, I thought that made about as much sense as "Eat Right for Your Hair Color," so I didn't bother reading the book.  Several years later (Summer 2005), a friend who had been worrying me by bouncing on and off the Atkins diet said she'd found a much more satisfying diet that worked at least as well, based on one's blood type, and mentioned several foods she had stopped eating.

I noticed a copy of the book in my chiropractor's waiting room, and borrowed it, thinking it would be fun to figure out what blood type my friend is from her list of forbidden foods.  Instead, I became fascinated by the description of the rationale behind the diet, and decided (in October 2005) to give it a fair trial.  I wasn't overweight (despite a few pounds of squishy fat that had recently appeared on my tummy), but did have some chronic health problems, including something like Chronic Fatigue.

I have been a vegetarian since 1989, so was delighted to discover that I'm an A.  (My friend is an O, by the way, which explains why Atkins had worked fairly well for her.)  After just a short time, I noticed that my bladder control had improved (a pleasant surprise!), and soon thereafter, that I was feeling more upbeat.

During most of the time since then, I have been living with considerable stress, which made it all the more surprising that I kept noticing new pleasant surprises, such as my slacks getting looser.  My life is easing up now, so I am eager to see what new surprises await me!

I got interested in the BTD the first time I picked up the book at the Wal-Mart in Kerrville, Texas in 1998.  I knew immediately that it was the right diet, the only one I should follow, and went out and bought some organic meat in Blanco.  Previously I had tried several diets, including veganism, macrobiotics, and the Zone.  I was on the Zone in the late 90s but wanted to go back to macrobiotics.  I wanted to find grains that would "work" for me.  (yeah, right)  My bowels were very messed up; I knew my diet had something to do with it but wasn't sure what to do next:  whether to continue on the Zone or to go back to a strict macrobiotic diet.  When I saw the food lists in the Eat Right book I realized they were made up partly of my favorite foods and also of foods I didn't eat regularly (meat).  Something told me it was the right system.  Also, the exercise:  I'd been an aerobics fanatic in my late teens and early 20s; that was what saved me I always told people.  So more or less I knew the whole blood type concept was true immediately.  

Now if only I could follow it better.

I decided to add another post; I feel like I left out too many details as to why I started.  In the early 90s I did Fit For Life, the food combining diet that advocates nothing but fresh fruit before noon.  This is how I got started eating salads, smoothies, etc.  For whatever reason, this diet was mostly fruit and veggie based, though it did allow grains for lunch and dinner, often accompanied by a salad or steamed veggies.  It really worked for me.  I was heavy in to aerobics at the time, and somehow, for a couple of years, managed to exercise like a maniac while eating mostly salad, fruit, and a few and blue corn chips.  I lost weight initially but eventually became ravenous for sweets.  At the end of the Fit For Life period my body fat was 30%.  (gee, must have been all those healthy low fat meals)

For about 2 years after this I tried macrobiotics but also gained weight and developed severe acne.  Actually, my skin problems at that time were more like pus filled lesions than acne.  

I decided to do the Zone in '96 at the suggestion of a friend who said it would help my candida.  In 1997 I went dairy free with great results.  I lost weight & had more energy.  Still, something was wrong.

At the end of the 90s I found Dr. D's book.  The first time I picked it up I knew it was the right diet because of all the success I'd had with the fruit, veggie, heavy exercise approach.  Also, I saw that figs were recommended.  I'd picked up on figs in the early 90s and loved to eat whole bags of them at a sitting with few or no digestive problems. It made sense to me also that meat was included.  I'd wanted to have meat in my diet for a while but was too afraid.

So here I am all these years later.  I didn't eat my meat or exercise last year  :--(  but this year am vowing to do better.  Have been having some meat in my diet lately and feeling much better.  It is hard to get over the guilt though; I've had so little meat in my diet for 20 years.  But, I also have the beginnings of the health problems, both physical and mental.

I originally started last year because I was a very sick O vegetarian.  I was so sick that the person closest to me found it apt to comment on how I was sick all the time.  I had extremely poor energy levels, breathing trouble, and I slept all day.

There was a time when I would let these people upset me.  But I have since learned that human beings learn from experience.  In particular, bad experience.  If someone wants to offhandedly dismiss BTD, that is their business.  If they want to eat poorly, that is their business.  If they want to smoke cigars and sit on the couch all day watching TV, that is their right.  If people want to be ignorant, that is their choice.

But I gaurantee that when they are sick enough, they will crawl out of their hole and look for a cure.  Maybe, just maybe, they will remember hearing about BTD.

All the time.  In fact, I doubt everything.  I am a doubter.  If my doubt becomes too great, I just remind myself of what BTD has done for me in the past, and what it is doing for me now.

That's why I left last year, you know.  I had to explore other avenues.  What I have learned since that time had led to a significant reduction in doubt about the BTD.  In fact, I can't think of a reason why I'd ever stop BTD, with knowing what I know now.  I couldn't reconcile myself to BTD last year because there were some things I had to *know* before permanently dedicating myself to this diet.  I believe that those things are now *known*

Im a newbie and type 0+, haven't yet tried anything but I have weight to lose and found by cutting out fats and eating healthily along with much exercise nothing seems to work....maybe if I eat according to type 0 it will???

does anyone else have this prob??

I'm happy to share my BTD story, now that I have people who understand it!
Warning: the following isn't in 100% chronological order.....
10-15 years ago I started having serious troubles with anxiety attacks and IBS(undiagnosed). I had health coverage thru my government job(in Tower One of The World Trade Ctr), and went to a lot of doctors. I was also practically living on Diet Coke and chocolate, and peanut m&m's, my portable comfort foods. I was surrounded by people who told me I was talking myself into the attacks of nausea and all-things-IBS, and I knew I wasn't.
One of the natural doctors I saw suggested I quit wheat and see how things went. Quit wheat, I thought!  Bizarre! I can't live without my pastries! Doesn't Health Food teaching tell you to EAT whole wheat? Wasn't Ayurvedic telling me to eat wheat? I DID try that for 6 weeks. And the most amazing things happened!!!!
The constant pain in my stomach receded, I had less gut problems, my skin no longer itched, my nose didn't run! AND, when I visited my sister who smokes, had several Siamese cats and several German shepherds, well... I did NOT have an allergic reaction in her house for TWO YEARS after!! As most of us know, it can be hard to stay away from our avoids, so I slipped back abit.
Oh, also I cut way, way back on the Diet Coke, and never drank as much of it again as I used to. I had started drinking diet soda in the late 70's and had worn glasses since early 80's. My distance vision deteriorated over the years.  Well, when I got my driver's license renewed, the "needs glasses" notation was removed! My sight had returned to normal after wearing glasses for 20 years! I didn't need glasses any more! Only reading glasses now. WOW!  

While driving and radio-channel-surfing I heard someone talking re: eating beef & avoiding wheat. I hung on to the steering wheel with my jaw dangling OMG, I've been thru things this guy is talking about!!! I took down Dr. D's name and got ER4YT 1st chance and have been loyal, if not compliant enuff, lo, these many years. I'm sure I wouldn't have listened if I didn't have some experience of it.
Also, most health systems try to bankrupt you buying all their health c**p, and the BTD seems to start with giving up what's hurting you, and is not OneSizeFitsAll!!!
People look at me crazy when I say I feel better if I eat beef!
I just joined coz I've been living in avoidland and paying the price(s), and feel awful. I'm ready to be somewhat good again, and so much of what I've read on the BTD site is stuff I know, feel or deal with, I know I've found a good community. lLove U guys!! You feel my pain and you make me laugh so hard! Thank you so much for being here. I have specific questions, but I'll post them separate.

I bought Dr. D's book several years ago, looked through it, saw the avoid list and sold it on Ebay.  
Cut to years later, terrible ecsema, blepharitis (red, itchy eyelids), weight gain, low thyroid, and I'm back.  This time, I got the book from the library and info from the website.  
I've been BTD'ing for a month now and my ecsema is almost gone.  My skin feels so much better.  The blepharitis hasn't improved, though.  I'm still hopeful.  
I can eat this way indefinately, I love all the O foods.  
I plan to delve deep into the BTD and stay there.  I'm making ghee right now!

I did have some wheat last Saturday and didn't have any immediate problems.  Sunday, however, my eyes were watery and red all day and I felt generally awful.  Tired, cranky, sick, just bad.  I'll never eat wheat again.  

I have a Sunday Dinner over at my house with the entire family, every week.  It will be difficult to cook for all of them while being able to eat it myself, but it's worth a try.  I guess a beef roast every Sunday wouldn't bee too bad.   :D

I started the blood type diet becuase I was tired of being "sick and tired."  I heard about it through my homeopathisc Dr. about 4 years ago and bout several of the ER4YT books and was enthralled with the info.  I started the diet, and saw changes, but at that time in my life, was not truly devoted to my health.  After the birth of my son almost 3 years ago, my body changed completely and the things that I used to could get away with eating, I no longer could.  I was so sick.  I had test after test, from stomach issues, to acne, to migraines, I was even diagnosed with Fibromyalgia!  I was starting to wonder if I had a autoimmune problem, as I was getting sick at every turn. My stomach problems and constant lethargy was really the worst of it all.  I could not eat anything without getting sick and this year was the worst!  I was losing weight, not very healthy, not to mention losing so many nutrients, that one day, my cousin brought to light my wheat intolerance.  Even though I had been tested at the GI Dr. for celian disease, it came up negative, but my homeopathic Dr. stated that my body did not like wheat or gluten.  My cousin reminded me of the BTD and I immediately pulled my books out!  I had a "TADA" moment, and have been back on the diet for almost a week now and the results speak for themselves.  I am still keeping a daily food journal and keeping track of my stomach isues, but since I have completely taken wheat out of my diet, my stomach seems to be trying to get back to normal (knock on wood!)  I truly thik that this will be the starting point of my road to recovery!

Welcome, Lillybeth, I feel your pain!! I'm delighted you're feeling better your first week "back!" I've been "back," as it were, for 3 weeks, now, and am reaping the bennies, nyuk, nyuk! ;D
We have miserable guts in common. Outside the BTD world, I always felt so isolated in my troubles, but here the explanations make sense.. and we have fellow travelers on the road to recovery...
You will find even the non-O's will have useful, helpful suggestions, advice and experience!

I am on the BTD for about five weeks now.

I started the diet because I have had problems with fatigue for years, as long as I can remember, really. I am 37 years old now, but I remember when I was in college at age 18/19, I was alreadytired very often (and suffering severe headaches, but the headaches have diminished through the years). When I wanted to go out at night (and that's what you do in college, don't you?), I was too tired, but pushed through and went anyway. I also was ill quite often: flue, sinus trouble, coughing and ear infections.
If there was some virus in the air, it sure as hell came to me!

I tried diets before, just to increase my energy level (not to lose weight). I tried the anti-candida diet for half a year in 2001, but that didn't help me one bit so I started eating "normally" again.
I also tried the ayurvedic approch, but that didn't last very long. It just wasn't my thing.

The fit for Life diet appealed to me, especially the fruit-eating in the morning. Over the years I always came back to eating fruit until noon. Intuitevely, I felt this was good for me.

My energy level isn't always extremely low, though. There are times that I'm ok (never top fit, but ok). And I noticed that I always respond well to exercise (at the gym), or walking or cycling. So even when I'm tired , I can exercise.

The last half year, since October, I was feeling more and more tired. Maybe this has something to do with me trying to become a vegetarian? I am a big animal-friend, so for years I have been trying to cut down on the meat gradually and become a vegetarian. Despite my strong intentions, I haven't succeeded! I just had to eat meat, even if it was only twice a week. I must say I am relieved that I can eat meat often now. (needless to say: only meat from animals that have had a decent life!)

During the holidays (of course I ate all kind of bad foods, combined with alcohol, which I know I don't tolerate at all), I was a total wreck. I was sooooo tired and feeling generally sick, I had strange heartbeats, was feeling dizzy and had neurological problems in my right arm and leg. In short: SOMETHING HAD TO HAPPEN.  :'(

January 1, I started eating much healthier, cutting out most sugar, ALL alcohol, dairy etc. I could easily apply what I had learned from my earlier dieting-periods. I started feeling in my body what my body didn't like and did like, and googled a lot on food intolerancies etc. But I wasn't sure where to begin. But I did feel that I responded badly to bread. So maybe a wheat allergy? More googling, and then I came across the BTD.

I have high hopes that this diet could be a winner for me, but I need to give it time before I can tell for sure. At the moment I don't feel too good because of sinus trouble and fatigue. Detox symptoms, so it seems.

Maybe I should start a new thread with the question: WHO CAN SHARE SUCCES STORIES ABOUT BTD BEATING FATIGUE? I'd really like to hear! Responses welcome! ;) :B

have your serving of fruit in the morning, but do incorporate protein a few minutes after the fruit.

this will give you more energy throughout the whole morning, until lunch.

you can always have your serving of fruit before lunch, also......
same thing for dinner......
but don t just eat fruit alone, you need the protein, like leftover dinner or lunch from the day before, that type of protein, with veggies.......an egg can also work great!

I must admit it is the very first time that I have ever participated in an Internet forum of any kind. Not only is it very very helpful (and surprising that so many people are on the forum. In the Netherlands, where I live, there is a Dutch forum with only a few responses per month), it is also great fun to get responses from people all over the world! Where would we be without the Internet? ;D

I started the BTD because I was sick and tired of being sick and tired - literally.  I suffered allergies and serious joint inflammation all the time and never seemed to have enough energy, and in addition I was overweight and seemed to have a perpetual case of brain fog.  I first tried to correct these problems by becoming a vegan.  While that helped with my weight problem - I went from a size 14 to a size 6 - it did nothing for my allergies, joint inflammation or brain fog.  

Depression over the inability to find a job once I moved to a new city led to my ending the vegan lifestyle.  I started eating fish and re-introduced wheat and sugar (among other foods) into my diet.  Needless to say I ballooned back to a size 14 in no time at all.  

Once I started working again, I began to try to lose the weight with diet and exercise.  Whatever I was eating never seemed to be quite right and whenever I went to exercise, I couldn't do it for long because my joints would hurt so bad.  Even when I was walking they hurt, so running was definitely out of the question.

So, I remembered the BTD that a type A friend of mine had told me about several years before.  I bought LR4YT, ordered a blood typing kit and a secretor testing kit and got started once I had my results.  

Two days after I began, I went to the gym and was actually able to run around the track several times with no pain.  In addition, the allergies became minimal and the brain fog was gone.

I came across this wonderful book in a used book store.  Started reading it and found it very interesting.  I myself am a Type O and my husband is a Type A.  What really made me interested was the fact that my husband has never like meat, he loves veggies and could pass up meat everyday.  Me on the other hand I love meat..and I am very carb sensitive.  There were alot of good things in this book.. So slowly but surely we are trying to eliminate the things in our diet that are on our avoid list.  I started on monday and so far so good.. Havent been perfect but I know with time we will be.  I enjoy this board so much because it gives great inspiration. :)
