After having my first fainting spell, I decided to go to a naturapath and see what was going on with my body.  I have been a vegetarian for about 13 years and was never concerned with how I ate.  My naturapath put me on the BTD to get my body back in order and I was completely amazed at the changes since going on it.  I have been on it now for about 2 months with a few cheat days here and there.  My energy levels have increased tremendously, I find myself at the gym more often and am able to up my workouts.  I no longer have dizzy spells.  I no longer get sugar cravings.  And on top of all that, I have lost weight which wasn't my goal at first, but is a huge bonus!  I bought the book Cook Right for Your Blood Type and just love the recipes and find that if you just plan ahead, it is an easy way of eating to stick to.  I plan on continuing to eat this way, but allowing myself a cheat here and there.

Hi michyj and welcome to the forum.

Stop by the member centre and light up your blood type avatar so we can see what you are.

I've been a veggo for more than 15 years and fortunately for BTD I'm Type A.

Ignore what the carnivores on here tell you ;-) , you can retain your vegetarian principles and follow BTD no matter what blood type you are.

Great news that you have found health again.
I can't think of any mammal on the planet which would be totally vegetarian as all would [accidentally or by creator design?] eat quantities of insect or other small creatures along with their veggies.

you have lots of fruits and vegetables, nuts to choose from on the O diet

It's easy for an A (no disrepect Paul) to tell you you can retain the vegan ways but they don't get dizzy spells from not eating meat like O vegans would.

Live like your DNA has programmed you to even if's little portions of meat here and there

Hi Paul,

It may be easily said to 'ignore the carnivores' but I have written more to elaborate some of the chemistry involved.  If you do not wish to follow this line of chemistry you will pay eventually ... are you 'spiritually' prepared to have others pay for the mistakes of a vegetarian/vegan diet?

I think I know a very large problem area and perhaps how to 'fix' it!  Many of the folks here have told you about: 0's and meat.  Now I'll tell you a little of 'why-meat for everyone?'

Meat (and only meat) has the amino acid taurine.  [To 'save' this amino acid there is a re-uptake mechanism in the kidney's.  People with type A blood are extremely good at this conservation.  They are however, not perfect and need that little bit of meat as recommended by Dr D.  Folks with 0-blood are somewhat like cats and do not conserve well.  So, an 0 who is a long time vegetarian/vegan will be short on taurine and the critical jobs it does.

Taurine can be thought critical in both aspects of being (1) a 'bound' chemical ... part of the cells' membranes and, (2) an 'unbound' or 'free'-taurine.
(1) taurine is known as a zwitterion [sounds like: twitter-eye-on].  These strange molecules have a small positive charge at one end and a negative charge at the other.  This means when they are bound the surface of all membranes has taurine aligned in a similar fashion and will have a slight negative charge ... [since like charges repel each other] cell membranes will stay apart.  

This strange behavior is fortuitous in our modern penchant for electronic gadgets because this means cell membranes will get some 'buffering' from the impact of modern electrical non-ionizing radiation ... sometimes called: electro-smog.  So folks who have 'environmental' allergies often are too sensitive to modern electricity and lack bound-taurine.  [A quick help for such folks (if they're on a computer) is to switch to a flat-screen monitor (an LCD display) that emits radiation some 1/4 inch ... regular monitors give off radiation some 17 feet in front of the screen ... likely more from the back, top, and sides.  And this radiation goes through walls like the walls are not there!]

Bound-taurine (in the process of becoming 'bound') also binds zinc tightly to membrane sites.['Symposium on Taurine' eds R. Huxtable &  A. Barbeau ... 1974 & 1976]  Zinc itself can be considered a crutial mineral.  So it will look something like the hairs on your arm ... M - Zn - HS03-CH2-CH2-NH2  where: M=membrane; Zn=zinc; -HSO3-CH2-CH2-NH2=the 'bound' taurine.  To elaborate on the hairs on your arm analogy ... 'M' is the skin on your arm; the hair-folicle is the 'zinc' and the rest on the hair is the 'taurine'.].  The NH2 is what is called an amide group and gives the membrane the slight negative charge.  

This also can be considered a great 'emulsifier' by keeping whole cells in suspension.  [The way detergents work!]

Whenever (and they often do) the 'inside' of the cell calls for zinc, membrane 'bound' AA transforms into PgE2, grabs the zinc on the membrane site and shepherds the zinc through the membrane wall.  By doing so, the call for zinc has been answered and the 'bound' taurine becomes freed.  The process leads to some rather 'strange' conclusions: all zinc is not the same.  Outside cell membranes zinc is involved in many, many activitities but inside of membrane walls it also does many more ... like building the super oxide dismutase enzyme (SOD) for scavanging free radicals to building the hormone insulin, and zinc does much more .......  The list of involvement of zinc is so extensive, I could easily fill this whole page just with the names of related zinc-deficient conditions .......

Because this mechanism is not understood some strange diet strategies result ...  AA(arachidonic acid) is called a 'bad guy' for making PgE2 (highly inflammatory).  PgE2 is rather a persitant ligand and will go to the next cell to find this zinc.  I have heard this discribed as 'attacking' another cell.  And many folks stay clear of AA (Zone diet).  

Zinc is never considered as THE answer to this.  Zinc is used both inside and outside of cells so when supplementing with zinc add a little taurine at the same time.  O's are poor conservers and will urinate most 'free' taurine rather quickly ... taking a supplement of taurine means you are adding to the amount of 'free' taurine only.  It is 'bound' to zinc and to membranes by the liver when it builds cells.  [It may help you to understand the taurine-zinc relationship like that between bricks(taurine) and motar(zinc).]

(2) all the 'free' taurine does not get 'lost' in the urine.  Some of it couples with cholesterol to form the bile salt - taurocholate.  This salt is a powerful emulsifier that helps digest very complex fats.  The most famous of these is vitamin K.  In its turn, K helps regulate the calcium in your body.

Calcium flux' control-problems not only cause osteoperosis, but arthritis, peripheral neuropathy, and the whole gamut a calcium-regulating difficulties.

Lastly I should comment a little about why people can point-fingers at carnivores ... seemingly mercilessly.  Free-taurine can be reduced in excess of 85% BEFORE ANY SYMPTOMS APPEAR ... and from other posts, such symptoms can happen in very little time.  One thing is very much a problem here: zinc is extremely involved in reproduction and some authors claim the most genetic defects can be overcome if enough zinc and B6 was available {'Zinc & Copper in Medicine' eds Sarper & Karcioglu}.   So maybe you can gloat about your superb health, but will your kid with cystic fibrosis or a brain tumour ???????  Vegetarianism is not fun-times.

Hope the chemistry hasn't been to bad ...  will you accept such an unusual view, especially that you will NOT see this written elsewhere ........?????????

Thanks for everyones comments, but I don't plan on adding meat back into my diet ever.  It's not a principal thing for me, I just get grossed out by meat, kinda like a kid who won't eat brussel sprouts!  Since starting the btd I have been so much more aware of my protein intake and have really started balancing my meals for the first time.  I have also started taking protein powders to make sure I am getting enough in my diet.  I feel great and realized before I was eating way too many carbs.  Personally I don't feel like by not eating meat I am missing anything.  I am taking supplements and regularly have been going to my naturapath to test what is going on inside my body and since starting the btd my body has gotten healthier, especially my cells.  Obviously I don't know all the chemistry stuff like John, but I feel great and will keep on going in the direction I am.  Being an O sometimes gets a bit tricky being veg, but you learn to get creative and it can be fun.

I always post this vegetarian viewpoint of BTD and Type O especially.  Dr. D does say that you can remain a vegetarian as a Type O.  Sounds like you're doing OK, but  there are some supplements like l-carnitine and coleus forskolli (sp?) that can be helpful for vegetarians.

This cached version doesn't look exactly like what I usually post, but the site was not working right now.  Most vegetarian writings are very anti-BTD, this one takes a more constructive approach to BTD.
