I'm investigating the Blood Type Diet to see if it's right for me & wanted to know if anyone out there with health problems similar to mine have had any success.  I am AB+, but I don't know if I'm a secretor.  I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, arthritis, bursitis, & tendonitis in both hands & wrists, two deteriorating discs in my back, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  My biggest concerns are fatigue, sluggish metabolism, & allergic reactions to various inhalent agents.  I'd like to lose about 30 pounds.  Has anyone out there been successful using the AB+ diet any of the health problems I listed?  I'd like to know before I committ to doing this.  Thank you for your help.

I did a search for avatar but didn't find anything.  Any help you could give me would be great.  I see there's a test I can buy to find out about the secretor thing.  Is that the thing to w/c you're referring?

theminx- yes dearle = verrrrryyy imporrrrtant = secretor test I think for myselve that was the most imprtant thing for me= to recognize that I am not that grainy type I thought to be :D  
You will have suber benef. results if you are really compliant within a few weeks- no
more pains- and great feelings and...and...and.. = calm in your mind ;D
but herefore we must work mentally and be aware "how" do you think- have a look beyond your patterns which are not only to solve with BTD but by recognizing and then
you become awake and aware about soooooo much things- great!!!! :D

Go to the member centre button on the top right of the page.
Under the section where it says edit profile there is a link called avatar settings.
When you get in there select your AB avatar secretor or non secretor, them click save to finish. You can then return to the forum via the main index button at the top of the page.

I'll order the secretor test ASAP. I'm so tired of the one size fits all diet mentality.  My boss & my brother both think Dr. Atkins hung the moon, but I've not done well w/ the low carb thing.  It's nice to find a program the realizes everyone's body is different & has different needs.

There are several ABs on the list (the lovely Isa among them) who are wonderful examples of how well the BTD works. You might want to check through some of the older threads and read their posts. Go to the button at the top of the page called "main index", that will bring up all the forums and threads. There's plenty to choose from--you might want to sort through the Testimonials to see if there's anything there to interest you.

I hope you decide to join in with us and give the BTD a try. It's well worth it! You'll find plenty of support and advice here at the message board, and your posts would be most welcome. :)

Hello and welcome to the BTD boards, theminx!

I was going to put in a link to my testimonial, but it seems to have disappeared. Instead, I will tell you that I have shed about 40 pounds since I started the BTD. I could have shed even more, but I have screwed up my eating choices from time to time.

The very first year I followed the BTD I was only sick once and had lots more energy. The second year, I was never sick, still had the energy, and kept my muscle tone much easier than in years before the BTD. This is my third year and I see no reason whatsoever to stop following the BTD. My goal now is to keep correcting my inconsistencies in following it because unfortunately old habits die hard.

Hi theminx and welcome to the forums.

My health has much improved since following BTD. †I was starting to get arthritis in my was painful to make a fist and if I knocked my hands. †Now I have no discomfort at all and my fingers are almost back to normal size....a little "lumpy" but I do not think that will go least there is no pain.

Here we grow a commercial crop that when in flower gives me bad hayfever however I am finding each season that passes my allergy reduces....this last year I just had a little bit of a sniffle. †I would continue to follow BTD just for that result alone.

I have osteoporosis and now find my bone density is reforming and I have more energy.

Because I am in my fifties I expect to have to address other health issues as they arise but feel confident that I will be able, with the help of BTD, to beat anything.

Sorry....all that sounded like an advertorial....but it is truly how I feel.

Now all this is not as easy as it sounds. †It takes time and there are many adjustments that have to be made. †Eating out is a nightmare....but all you can do is the best that you can. †An avoid now and again will not wreck the grand plan but eating as many beneficials as possible and trying to avoid the avoids will go a long way to improving your health.

I do hope you decide that BTD is for you. †

One of the nice things about the BTD is that it is safe--its just food-no funny drugs, herbs, etc. that could be harmful. The AB type is very economical, too.  You can eat grains, some dairy, & soy & those thinkgs are CHEAP & easy to get.  You can eat sandwiches, grab some bread, etc.  We Os are very expensive & time consuming in food preparation.  I'm married to an AB, so its easy to throw something together for him, whatever time he comes home.  As for me, it's almost impossibel to travel, even for a few hours & get the right food without a lot of preparation!  So, I thought you might like to know these other advantages of the diet since you are an AB!
Welcome to the wackly world of the BTD.  I think you'll find us a friendly bunch who are willing to help!!
BTD boards are  the main ones I go to when I go on line...mostly the only ones.
So I hope you will see why!

fish and meat becasue you'll get super-quick-fat if you 'll use to much grains.....! :P

I find it interesting that many AB's are overweight...I too need to shed a good 50 pounds...I also deal with severe mood swingsand hormone imbalance (Thyroid).

I find it interesting from reading the threads how many AB's are overweight....count me in with over 50 pounds to lose....
I suffer from severe mood swings and hormone ( Thyroid) problems and lately tooth problems...back molars are getting cavities under existing white fillings that then need to be root canalled! I'm devistated and do not want to pull any teeth out as I alreading had 4 adult teeth pulled as a teenager because of crowding....

overweight ;   I think its the carb. problem inwhich our B-part takes the conter to get its
carb. resistancies.... so far as being a nonnie= I was just able to learn ;D not so much carbs and as our beloved meischdda wrote.....*complex carbs* are the super-no-no's for us.... and then have a look also for "exercises" ..... not my thema :P but must re-learn how to proceed :P :P :P

Just getting the hang of posting something....How about depression, moodswings and hormonal ( Thyroid) problems. I too have 50 pounds to lose and it's overwhelming to say the least.

Did ya do a medical check up for your thyroide? As lola mentioned once... it is true that
it became usual to diagnoze people with thyroide-problems to be depressive... but it isn't in reality!! I agree..........very :P
and I think if this is a real depression so far (seems to be AB and AB nonnie combat) ;D
take some 5 HTP and you may feel you much better instead of such bloody ssri's which
mostly will take you into dependencies and you'll have problems while trying to quit and for sure- my dear- nobody would tell ya but they just love to prescripe Zoloft or other *fine* things.....

At first, I think the mostly benef. will be to have a gŁxl onto your secretor status and then as second, or better if you'll do it at the same time...check your thyroide.... and then auffiiiii pop into BTD cold turkey... let your body work on its owne- dont' force at all
and most of people of our royal race ;) wrote that they lost more than one gram in a week!  ;D fine- no??)
what I didn't realized really was that bloody question of fitness and workouts... and it seems to be really necessary... even if my lazyness calls me for noooo action at all :D

Same as what Isa-Manuela just said plus this:

Both my husband and mother notice that I am in and stay in a much better frame of mind when I get regular aerobic exercise (3-4x week). After my husband told me this plus that he had observed that I am affected emotionally by eating wrong, I started observing myself and he is correct.

If you are talking about moodswings caused by PMS the answer is still the same. The longer I was eating correctly the less the problem. While on that subject, eating extra peanuts really helped combat food cravings during PMS. The less food cravings the less time it takes to take off the extra poundage. Also, eating more of what you should be eating anyway during that TOM isn't necessarily a bad thing since the female metabolism goes up somewhat then.

Firstly your not an idiot this is all a learning experience.

Not sure what 5 HPT is, feel I should know but the brain isn't quite in gear today, so I will let someone else come back to you re that one.

Discrepencies in the books occur because the great thing about BTD is it is an evolving science. †There is an errata page here on the forum, I will post a link to it in a minute - have to go find it - which will give you all the changes made. †The biggest change for AB's is that coffee was beneficial in Eat Right then the good doctor did further research and it became an avoid by the time Live Right was published.

Which is the best one? †Well I think start at the beginning with Eat Right and then progress to Live Right...if finances are a problem or you just do not want to purchase them all take a trip to the local library and have a read first then decide.

The ER4YT book is the best for starters. However, it does not contain
information on the secretor status which is 80% of the population. You can
have some info on secretor-non secretor issue by following the link:

follow the portion and frequency guidelines as outlined in Live Right.  Also,
Peter recommends favoring Tier Two foods for weight loss.

The exercise guidelines per specific blood groups assist with weight loss,
maintaining emotional health, and lowering/stabilizing cortisol levels.

Hi, Heidi! I was reading your column today (July 19) and noticed that Eagle seemed confused about the Tier Two diet, so I thought I would offer my interpretation. Here goes: EVERYONE should eat according to the Tier ONE food lists, and everyone should choose Beneficials over Neutrals as often as possible. If you desire only moderate compliance, that's as far as you need to go--and you can pretend that all of the foods in the Tier TWO list have the value "Neutral." If, on the other hand, you desire stricter (Tier TWO level) compliance, then you should eat according to BOTH lists COMBINED--not just the list labeled "Tier Two." So if you have been ignoring the distinction between the tiers and treating them as one big list, then you're already aiming for Tier TWO compliance! The way I personally use the Tier system is this: I strive to avoid all foods marked AVOID on either list (Tier TWO compliance), but if I know that circumstances are going to require me to eat an AVOID food, I try to make it one of the ones on the "Tier Two" list because I figure that these are the lesser evils. I would like to add to that information with regard to weight loss. I do better when I follow the guidelines from Dr. D's Diabetes book even though I am not and never have been diabetic. I think that others have made this same observation in the past as well like Cheryl Hendrix (Cheryl O Blogger).

5HTP = precoursor for serotoninbuildings and very usefull for us in case of real depressions; but there's something else called L'tryptophan as an amino-acid- I don't know but I think this is a little different because the 5HTP is an extract of a plant- but
results must be very similar ;D  and if I am well informed= no weight-gain with this stuff what can't be expected from ssri's!!!

You guys are a bundle of info....Wish I could absorb all I've read. I also just finished reading another book called " The Maker's Diet" I'm very confused because I follow a Christian lifestyle and I'm a bit concerned that ERFYBT is based solely on Evolution. Well I believe in Creation, now what do I do??. There has to be other Christian's following this plan and I'd love to hear what they have to say....I so desperately want this to work, I need to get this weight off!!!!!

I'm a Christian & a strong believer in Creationism.  I've had success with the Blood Type Diet.  The fact that Dr. D'adamo's worldview is Evolution doesn't pose a problem because it only pertains to his beliefs on the beginning of blood types, not to his findings on how foods interact w/ certain blood types.  His theories on eating according to your blood type are his own personal observations & documented experimentation, whereas his views on the origin of blood types are based on evolutionary theory, which, along with Creationism, is something a person takes on faith because none of us were witnesses to the beginnings of the Universe, no matter what way you think it began.

Thank-you...I so needed to hear other peoples views...Question for the Minx...You said you've had great success with the Eat right diet...Weight loss?? Health related?? I need to hear some weight loss stories...HOW MUCH.... How long did it take...I have eaten 70% Beneficials and 30% Neutrals for 2 weeks now ( only avoid I really can't rid myself of yet is 1 meduim coffee with down to instant coffee with milk..slow but sure)  ...I've  not lost an ounce!!! and I'm so beyond Bitchy I scare myself! whole family( They are all B+'s)  are eating Ezekiel 4:9 bread, won't let any other bread in the house..Can't find Dr. D's Diabetic book, checked Chapter's...Someone suggested this for weight loss...I should really get this secretor thing done many things, so little time

Hey Girly, I've lost almost 12 lbs. now in the last 6 weeks.  Health wise, my hot flashes aren't nearly as bad as they were.  I've been eating almost all beneficials.  I had my blood analyzed by The Southwest College for Naturopathic Medicine.  They tell you your ABO, secretor & MN staus, & w/c A subtype you are.  These were all determining factors in what foods I could eat.  I'm going by the lists in Live Right 4 Your Type.  I'm borrowing the Eat Right 4 Your Type Encyclopedia from the library to find out what supplements I can take for my various health problems.

I've "lost" (don't want to find it and get any of it back!) over 60 pounds since starting BTD.  I admit that I've re-gained and then re-lost about 13 of that, but it was always 100% traceable to my straying from the AB diet.

The two most important things for me are: getting in the exercise (helps with the weight loss and keeps my mood more level during stress) and using the lists from Dr. D's Health Library series Diabetes book.

When I "behave" myself I shed an average of 10-12 lbs of excess fat per month. This did not happen immediately though. It took some time for me to adjust to eating this way even after I "got" the idea. Generally, everyone's body has years worth of bad eating choices to correct. Your body does want to be well and will take the time to repair itself first so that it can lose the extra weight.

With some of the major upheavals my life has had in it since January of this year (don't worry, I won't go into any of it here) I must be honest and admit that I have not been losing any additional pounds, but I have stayed on the general diet which has kept me from my annual severe sinus infection around Easter (annual pre-BTD that is) as well as other gaining back what I have thus far managed to get rid of and I didn't lose my muscle tone during periods of inactivity like I used to and no really nasty PMS.

When I have more time, I will write out the AB list values that I use from the Diabetic book so that you can use them until you can find your own copy.

NOTES: For the sake of time & space I am only listing the beneficials and the neutrals that are allowed frequently unless I tell you otherwise.

Also, I find I personally get the best results when I have turkey 2x week, fish 5x, all four of the allowed eggs, and all 4oz of the cheeses plus the other allowed dairy items. I have two lamb shoulder chops about once every 3 weeks instead of one of the turkey servings. This does not mean that you are this way. I am only telling you this to show you that each person has to play with the values and choices some to fine tune it to her/himself.

These are the Diabetics BTD values for AB secretors:

Beneficial: lamb, mutton, rabbit, turkey
Neutral: goat, ostrich, and pheasant

Super Beneficial: cod, mackerel, red snapper, salmon, and sardines
Beneficial: grouper, mahi-mahi, monkfish, pickerel, pike, porgy, sailfish, shad, escargot/snails, sturgeon, and tuna
Neutral: abalone, bluefish, bullhead, carp, catfish, chup , craker, cusk, drum , halfmoon fish, harvest fish, fresh herring, mullet, muskellunge, opaleye, orange roughy, parrot fish, all perch, pollock, pompano, rosefish, scrod, scup, shark, smelt, sucker, sunfish, swordfish, tilapia, tilefish, tuna, and weakfish

Super Benefical: Kefir (personal note: watch out for FOS - itís not good for ABís), goat milk, yogurt
Beneficial: cottage cheese, chicken eggs, farmers cheese, feta, goat cheeses, mozzarella, ricotta, sour cream
Neutral: casein, cream cheese, edam, goose & quail eggs, gouda, gruyere, Jarlsberg, meunster, neufchatel, paneer, quark, string cheese, whey

Benefical: olive & walnut oils
Neutral: almond, black currant seed, borage, canola, castor, cod liver, evening primrose, flax (linseed), peanut, and soy oils

Super Benefical: peanut, peanut butter, walnut (black & English)
benefical: chestnut
neutral: almond, almond butter, almond cheese, almond milk, beechnut, butternut, flax (linseed), hickory, lychee/litchi, pignolia (pine nut)

The quantity per serving for beans changes to 1 cup (cooked).
Super Benefical: miso, soy bean, tempeh, tofu
Benefical: green lentils, navy bean, pinto bean
neutral: green/snap/string bean, cannellini, copper bean, brown and red lentils, northern bean, peas (green, pod, and snow), soy cheese, soy milk, tamarind bean, and white bean

Benefical: amaranth, essene/manna bread, Ezekiel 4:9 bread, millet, oat bran, oat flour, oatmeal, whole rice, wild rice, rice bran, rice cake, whole rye, rye flour/products, soy flour/products, whole spelt
Neutral: barley, couscous, spelt flour/products, quinoa

Veggies: list of neutrals allowed infrequently (defined as 1x month or less) and avoids is MUCH shorter so here those are instead:
Neutrals - infrequent: carrot, daikon radish, olive (Greek, green, and Spanish), poi, potato (white), pumpkin, taro
AVOID: aloe, artichoke, corn, mushroom (abalone & shiitake), black olives, all pepper, all pickles, radish/sprouts, rhubarb

Fruit: same type of list as the veggies because itís so much shorter:
Neutrals - infrequent: apricot, asian pear, breadfruit, canang melon, cantaloupe, casaba melon, Christmas melon, Crenshaw melon, currants, dates, honeydew, prunes, raisin, and tangerines
AVOID: avocado, banana, bitter melon, coconut, dewberry, guava, loganberry, mango, orange, persimmon, pomegranate, prickly pear, quince, sago palm, starfruit (carambola)

Super Beneficial: Green Tea
Benefical: Red Wine
Neutral: beer, seltzer water, club soda, white wine

The spices are lengthy so hereís the super bene, bene, and some of the neutrals:
Super Benefical: ginger & turmeric
Benefical: garlic, horseradish, blackstrap molasses, oregano, parsley
Neutrals: basil, bay leaf, caraway, cardamom, carob, chili powder, chives, cilantro, cinnamon, cloves, cream of tartar, cumin, dill, juniper, mace, marjoram, mint, dry mustard, nutmeg, paprika, rosemary, sage, savory, sea salt, tarragon, thyme, vanilla, yeast

The herb teas are lengthy too, so hereís some of them:
Super Benefical: dandelion, ginseng, licorice root (donít use the licorice if you have high blood pressure unless its the DGL type)
Benefical: alafalfa, burdock, chamomile, echinacea, ginger, hawthorn, parsley, rosehip, strawberry leaf
Neutral: peppermint, raspberry leaf, sage, sarsparilla, spearmint, thyme, yarro, yellow dock (thereís more herbs in this category, but itís fairly long)

O.K. Chanur you are an absolute DOLL !!!!! To take the time to write all that very much appreciated. ...60 pounds, well hope for me yet. Because there seems to be so few AB's around a wish I could buy a book just for our bloodtype solely ( maybe to come... Dr. D ??) Recipes for everyday living just made easy...I also live with a family of B's. For me to be AB... Would one of my parents be AB?? Anyway I am printing this list Chanur and will try my hardest to stick to it..( I'm sitting her eating spelt flakes..pretty good with raisens and vanilla soymilk)

No, one of your parents doesn't have to be AB, but one or both could be.

O.K. another you see I still have not got my secretor test done...not that easy to find here in Canada !!! I must send away and then the duty thing and customs  !!!! But I'm thinking I might be a nonny...firstly because I carry a lot of extra weight 60 pound easy I definately am addicted to carbs...muffins, bread, ect...and retain a lot of water....vericose veins, bad circulation in my legs...and having problems with my teeth...cavities in between back teeth and under old white fillings ( no mercury in my mouth) and I am constantly ANGRY and STRESSED. I never feel calm or at peace...I read in another thread about Anger and Liver function...Hummmm sounds like me. So anyway do nonnies have some traits that are easily tracked??
It's so strange..If AB's are so rare I must attact sister-in-law ( no blood relation) is AB+ and my daughter's best friend is AB+
