I find all the information about methylation to be fascinating.  But it now raises some questions for me:

1) Is there any way to control what genes get methylated?  

2) Is the methylation of some genes advantageous, while that of others is negative?

3) How do you know what foods methylate, and which ones don't?

4) If you de-methylate too much, isn't that as harmful as it would be to a developing zygote?

5) Once genes get methylated in the womb, is there any way to de-methylate them during the life span?

6) To pass on new methylation patterns, can gonad cells only be methylated or demethylated during gestation?  Is there any way to alter their methylation during the lifespan, in order to pass on healthier epigenetic instructions to offspring?  Or is it that once they're methylated in a certain way during gestation, that's it, until the next gestational round?

These questions seem very pressing, and I would like to know if anybody has the answers to them...  Thanks.

well, thought I'd join the conversation.

  I got a printout of my polymorphisms and its a doozy. One polymorphism interrupts another...or whatever. My research tells me that its a good idea to take methylFolate instead of folic acid, and hydroxycobalimin and methylcobalamin instead of cyanocobalamin. And p-5-p instead of B-6. Ok. Can do. But the amounts are extremely individual, as the degree of obstruction these polymorphisms cause varies person to person. So there will be some experimenting to see what helps. Then there's the transsulfuration pathway which is abstructed in my case, causing sulfur to build up in my system. I'm taking a bit of molybdenum and manganese to help with this. Carefully. Would love to hear what your issues are and what's working.

Oh, I have a swami......but there's no way he can know all my personal variants or which ones are expressing short of an appointment with him, which is prohibitive in distance.
But don't get me wrong, I love my swami!

I went back to my genetic testing from 2007 and I have two pluses on my methylation results which
is on chromosome 1.  The suggestions are methylfolate which I had taken in the past from the
PHd nutritionist who had ordered these tests. ; My niece had the same results on her genetic testing
when she had issues during pregnancy.  Obviously this runs in our family.

I remember bring all of this with me to my first visit to see Dr. D a few years ago when his office
was still in Wilton and before he was teaching the shift.  So he and Dr. Nash did my SWAMI and although it's focusing on methylation, nobody has suggested I take any methylfolate nor was this
genetic testing even addressed.

I'm with Lola on this one....I really believe my SWAMI has been adjusted to do the work that a bunch
of one size fits all supplements might be doing if you were seeing any physician who isn't using
Dr. D's system of healing.

I also am of the opinion that I'm doing all I can do with my diet without worrying about tests that only show a predisposition, not an active disease of any kind.  My blood work is 100% normal so aside from the fact that I spent a fortune for all this genetic testing, I honestly don't take the results all that seriously.

A SWAMI diet should be able to do amazing things....perhaps more amazing than if a person ate
whatever they wanted and then took the supplements a genetic test recommends.

I am totally agree with the fact that there is not to take seriously these mutations as long as our blood does not show drastic changes, but the prevention is essential, I believe.
I am also aware and repeated to all of the physicians I came in contact that Dr.D'Adamo had already considered this genetic variation in some of his genotype, and, of course the swami takes in consideration all of our medical issues too.

I am embarassed to say this, but if I still have problems sometime it is because(other than my present conditions) I do not follow either my blood type diet, or genotype as I should. But, when I am capable to follow strictly I do see the results, and I only feel comfortable and safe using the blood type products.

These are some of the blood type products that I take for supporting my methylation mutations:

Methyl-12-Plus, of course, Polyvite(which has a little bit of everything we need), Redoxa for the Gluthation, Teacher Activator for the Betaine, and Genoma Cardia for the Taurine, but not just for this, and I have few more other products to supplement the demand of the B vitamins, mainly the B-6, and minerals.

I have plenty of products, and I keep trying based on the daily demands. I know that I should keep straight on the most important, but I have too many phisiological issues to handle, and still to understand my body demand and the response to the products and the foods.

I may have still issues, but thanks to the tools and the information I have now, mainly from the blood type science, I can dial with all much better, and have a remedy ready for each complaints, and they work immediately.

I never miss my Polyflora, or Deflect, and I love Bromelain, it makes feel so good when you take it, either as digestive than as anti-inflammatory (my main use), but if there is some intestinal problem around Scienca is better, so as Collisonia has helped me a lot with congestion and allergy.
I was suffering with asthma for a period of couple years; I almost do not have any more asthma, or any type of digestive problem.

Marosar, I also cured my asthma by getting off wheat! Thanks to the BTD!

Y'know, these mutations we speak of are all just interesting until a major stress hits and they begin expressing and you can no longer sleep, think straight, you suffer anxiety, etc. ...and you can feel your system is off, you can't right it, you get diagnosed with adrenal fatigue by NP, all of which are linked to the expression of these mutations. But a regular doc won't recognize any of the above. :B

Anyone taking Dr. D's MethylGuard?

I have had good results with the Methyl 12 Plus product, but have never taken Thorne's Methyl-Guard product.

If your SWAMI is set up to focus on methylation and then you go to your geno-harmonic combos and
Eat as many of them as you can that have 4 or more stars, then you're enhancing methylation even
more~ :)

Dr. D's supplements, including the Hunter Catalyst recommended by my SWAMI, have folic acid in them.  After studying my 23andme methylation gene testing results, I'm considering stopping both that and Methyl B12 which also has folic acid in it. It seems like folic acid is the worst form of folate for me to be taking.
