I am not feeling well.  this has been going on for about 24 hours.  I'm wondering if it is possible to overdose on fresh garlic?  

I like it, and use it to flavor most things that I eat.  I have greatly increased it's use since starting BTD...maybe up to 20 cloves a day.  

I have been feeling woozy and a bit lightheaded.  I've made an appt with my MD for Friday....I do take Hyzaar for Hypertension and Coreg for Congestive Heart  Failure.  I'm wondering if the Garlic is lowering my BP--don't have a way to check it at home.  

I have so many health issues that its hard to track down a new problem.  Anyway, maybe I'm just needing some Tea (Green) and Sympathy.  ;-)

What made you decide to consume so much raw garlic cloves a day? Just curious. It does taste good. My boyfriend and I were into and still are into raw garlic but the most we usually eat is 4 or 5 raw garlics each and usually in aoli. Even when I do that I notice that my digestion is thrown out of balance which happens alot so I have to take alot more probiotics. Remember that garlic is a fairly strong Antiboitic especially in the amounts you seem to be taking and so your beneficial intestinal bacteria might be killed off by all that garlic I know mine does with much smaller amounts. Garlic is also good for lowering blood pressure so you might want to cool it on the garlic and see if you feel better. You can still eat it but maybe try it in just one meal for a few days. Or if you really want to see if that is the problem try eliminating it entirely for a week and see how you feel. Thats just my two cents.

Thanks for your cautionary comments.

I'm a Texan, and really, really miss jalepeno peppers and other spicy foods.  Garlic is the closest easy thing I've found to add to my cooking as I adjust to life without peppers, etc.  

I also like Horseradish, but its hard to find a prepared product without soybean oil, and vinegar, for that matter.

I also have some ongoing problems with likelihood for infection, so I've been trying large doses of garlic in an effort to deal with that situation as well.  Garlic does seem to be helpful in that use.

After I wrote my first post on this thread I took my regular meds, and quickly began to feel better.  I'm now considering if perhaps I need to cut back on my use of sea salt.  Perhaps my moderate use of sea salt is simply too much for my system.

As I shared, I have quite a few health issues--that's why I'm here   :)  --so please bear with me as I work these things out.

I grated fresh horseradish root mixed with lime or lemon juice.  This is a very acceptable substitute for a prepared horseradish, as long as you aren't expecting it to be creamy!!!

If you want it to be creamy, you should probably find a compliant bean to mix with it...  Although some experimenting to get the desired taste and texture.

If you want really fresh horseradish you should grow it. Once its started I guarentee you wont be able to get rid of it. If you were to rototill 1 root of horseradish into the soil then you probably would end up with about a hundred plants. Every time you break a root in the ground a new plant will spring up from the broken root. Thats ok even though its a weed its pretty tasty.

Myra- 3 garlic cloves are recommended to lower blood pressure.  I use it faithfully.

Can somebody remind me what horseradish is good for.  I just made some and also how much a day is recommended?

Contains component which either blocks polyamine synthesis or lowers indican levels.
and positively influences known disease susceptibility.

Where do you live where you can't get jalapenos?
We can get them in cans. My AB husband loves them & I found out they were avoid for him, but I'm not going to micromanage his life!
BTW, is the avoid in jalapeno safer or less safe for than others for ABs?

I grew up in New Mexico and really really miss my chile peppers. I've given them up completely for now, although I admit I used to use cayenne almost daily as a replacement for black pepper.

A couple of things have helped spice things up for me: red onion and fresh ginger root, combined or used separately. I use a fair amount of garlic, but probably not more than 5-6 cloves a day max, depending on what I'm cooking.

As a Type O, I would replace this heavy intake of garlic with cayenne.

It's a beneficial in the Arithritis books.

Thanks so much for all of your support and suggestions!

Due to arthritis I have to avoid peppers.  I'm not that crazy about cayenne--not full bodied enough, but will try to increase it as I decrease the garlic.  Also thanks for the tip about horseradish and lemon juice--I'll give it a whirl!

Also, drinking Black Cherry Juice seems like an amazing tonic to me.  I realize this is off subject, but does anyone know why this could be?

Probably because the black cherry juice is a benefical juice for you :)

I also just noticed that cherry juice is a superbenefical juice for cancer - so it may also be superbenefical in other health series books as well :)

You can also get pure horseradish powder, such brands as Sushi Sonic, by Great Eastern Sun, out of Asheville, N.C.  Mix with a little liquid and seasonings, and you have your own instant and pure horseradish sauce.

For congestive heart failure, an effective tool is Tienchi (Notoginseng or PseudoGinseng).

Many years ago, I was married to a man who developed congestive heart failure.  His heart was very enlarged and he had severe edema in his feet and lower legs.  I gave him Tienchi every day for several weeks, and at his next exam, his heart was back to normal size, and the edema had stopped.  

It would be good if you can locate a TCM practitioner that you can trust, someone who understands the use of traditional chinese herbs.  I believe the appropriate herb is in its' raw form, but that would need to be double checked.  

Also the main herb for high blood pressure is Eucommia Bark.

Well worth researching a bit, because these herbs are like the BTD in the sense that they actually heal the body and promote health instead of just eliminating (temporarily) symptoms as drugs do.

The Kansas College of Chinese Medicine is located here in Wichita.  Have you, or anyone else, heard of it by any chance?

I don't know anything about it, but am willing to consider anything.  On their website they have a Free "Ask a Doctor" page.  Perhaps I'll make an initial contact that way.  Now if I can just figure out what to ask first!  ;)

Everyone said it, but yes, you can get too much garlic and it will unbalance your flora.  Just cut back and pay attention--it is good for you.  It won't handle candida by itself, however, in my experience (I think because it zaps too many friendlies), but as part of a plan, it's great.  AND fun to eat.

In TCM, there is a definite connection between high blood pressure and congestive heart failure, and both would need to be addressed.  If you ask a question, be sure to give that information so that whoever answers you will have those facts to work with.

The College of Chinese Medicine sounds like a great resource for you.  Their website says that they have a clinic and a Wellness Center.  Since they are used for advanced training for their students, prices should be reasonable.

I was just re-reading this thread, and thinking back to when I first posted it.

I think I really felt better when I was eating more fresh garlic.  I have tried to cut it down to 5-6 cloves a day, but just don't seem as on top of my game.

Also, because of my great lab results, I'm thinking I better stick with my garlic grove!  ;-)

Myra, you asked about black cherry juice and how you've felt better since drinking it.  It has an alkalizing effect on your pH and rids your body of uric acids that form little crystals that get stuck in joints (gout).

I have been watching my pH balance but let my readings slip the past couple of days.  I'm now reminding myself to read tonight.  I had bc juice yesterday but didn't think to do a reading.

I use fresh garlic (usually 1 clove a day), lots of fresh ginger root, dry mustard, dry ginger (dry ginger is much more 'peppery' and less sweet than fresh) to add the spicey component to my meals.

A compliant, dry wasabi powder would be another option to spice your food up.  I believe there is a clean brand on the market that contains only horseradish.

My local market has been out of fresh horseradish, but as soon as they get some in, I'm going to try grating it, adding some olive oil and lime juice, and a touch of sea salt.  Don't know if it will work--but I'm going to give it a try!

I also use the wasabi powder, it's nothing more than powdered horseradish. You might try some compliant mayo along w/ the lime juice and olive oil. :-)

Colleen, do you check your PH with those yellow strips? And do you do it every day?

Victoria, you mention you gave Tienchi every day for several weeks, to your at the time husband, who had developed congestive heart failure, had a very enlarged heart and severe edema in his feet and lower legs.  And that it was normal at his next dr's appt.
How much and how often a day? My mom was just diagnosed w/ an enlarged heart. Not sure about the edema. I'd like to run this by my NP and see what he might recommend for my mom or if you know, that would be great as well.  :) :K)

I bought the raw powdered Tienchi (Pseudo ginseng) and put it into large capsules.  I gave him one about 20 minutes before each meal for about a month and then he was re-checked.

I think the brand was Plum Flower, and I special ordered it through my local health food store.
Tian San Qi or Noto Ginseng are two other names that it is known by.

Here is another source that I found just now, with a nice explanation of the herb.  They also sell it in caps, which is nice, since the taste is very bitter.  CLICK

With any herb, especially capsuled ones that are standardized and can be pretty strong, less is often more.

Any herb can be overdosed, not that it will kill you like some Rx meds, but can be unpleasant for sure.

I recently began halving the recommended amounts on herbs i use and actually feel better.  I currently have been using chamomile and skullcap.  The serving recommendation for both is 2 capsules per serving.  I use just 1 capsule of each at a time.

Some websites say a couple of grams of skullcap daily is good or a couple grams of chamomile is good, but for me, this would be too much at least to start with.  I quickly started to use too much skullcap and it kept me up and did not feel pleasant, whereas at much lower amounts, it is profoundly effective.  Same with chamomile, a mild but powerful herb.  Less at a time over time is better than taking in 2 times the serving recommendations!

I often fall into the trap of thinking more is better and start with the max recommended dose to really get it in my system and instantly get the benefits.  The more i use herbs, the more i learn that a little bit over a long period of time is much better.

I also have taken 2000+ mg of rhodiola daily, 2+ grams of licorice root daily, 1000 mg. of bacopa daily, etc.  Too much, overkill!

Yes, EasyE, I usually start with 1/2 dose or 1/4, myself.

I've added a clove (or two) of fresh raw garlic to my meal at the first sign of a cold or sinus infection.  But if I keep adding garlic to meals for too long, I'll get an upset stomach, quite like taking Erythromycin.
