What ho, my fellow nonnies!  Any of you who have been here at BTD Central for more than five seconds know that I have a theory, based on basically NOTHING but my own intuition, that non-secretors have an affinity for sour/bitter tastes.  If you are a nonnie, take the decidedly unscientific poll and let's see what unscientific info it renders!  Weeeeeeeeee!

Sorry, Don, this poll is just for nonnies. The polling software here at BTD Central does not allow cross-references/sub-questions, like first breaking people down into secretors or nonnies and THEN asking them which tastes they prefer. Otherwise, I would have done this poll before the nonnie clubhouse existed and compared "secries", as Dr. D. calls ya, to nonnies, taste preference-wise. That would be a whole other thaaaang. A whole BETTER thing!  As it is, though, this poll is simply to determine, within the nonnie subgroup, if there are a whale of a lot of us who like sour/bitter tastes or not.  I will have no way to compare it to the secretors' taste preferences, sadly.  It will just be interesting to see how the intra-nonnie-clubhouse numbers break down.

You could have had options like, I'm a nonnie and love sour/bitter tastes and I'm a secretor and love sour bitter tastes, etc.  We can't see the poll results if we don't vote.  Maybe post the tallies every so often, so we can get more insight into the nonnies.  But I like sour/bitter tastes myself and am a secretor, so at least you don't have a monopoly on it.  I miss having pickled foods.

If the poll was broken down a bit more finely, I would have voted 4 on a scale of 1-5 -- like 'em for variety, but not absolutely nuts about 'em.

If there were no sour/bitter tastes available to me, then I might well be craving them.  But for sour, there's all kinds of fruit, especially lemon juice.  And for bitter, there's dandelion greens and chocolate.

I like sour/bitter taste in the natural foods. Not the candy department at the corner store up the street. I was soooooo sad when vinegar was an avoid. :'( :)

I always thought that I hated sour and bitter taste. In fact my yoghurt, for example, always had to come with loads of sugar, otherwise it was inedible. The other day I bought some yoghurt, mixed my fruit in it and nothing else and at a certain moment I was eating yoghurt with nothing in it. Just plain and it was a sour, but I liked it. Wasn't bothered by it at all. Guess my tasts buds have changed, or rather are more in tune to what I eat. Instead of covering the taste of everything up with sugar or fat.

I am a taster bordering on non-taster.  I think that plays an important role.  I would love to see several new polls including one for secretors only.  Super tasters would be more likely to hate anything that was bitter or sweet.  Without the taster/supertaster/nontaster information, I think the poll won't work as well.

I googled "cruciferous taste bitter" because I'd heard that some people (esp children) find the taste of brussels sprouts, broccoli, etc quite bitter, and the "supertaster" information came up--which I was about to ask you about, Vicki!  Here's the site I found:

I love sour--always have.  I'm not as big a fan of bitter.  I was definitely a supertaster as a child.  And I clearly grew out of it, because brussels sprouts used to make me, literally, choke, they were so bitter.  I didn't like dark chocolate either.  Now, nothing.  And I love dark chocolate. And broccoli. This apparently is not unusual.

So parents of supertasters, don't despair!  First, your kid might really find broccoli unbearably horrible tasting; they aren't necessarily just being difficult.  Second, they very well may grow out of it.

I saw a report a few weeks back that people who like cauliflower are more likely to have weight problems.  They think it has to do with that taste thing.  Maybe we can't taste things that many would consider bad, so eat more, maybe need for taste not satisfied.  Makes some sense, but when older people lose their sense of taste they tend to eat less.  Whatever the real cause, I am one of those that like cauliflower and I definitely have weight issues.

WOW, Im a Super Taster.  I learn something new every day.  When everybody tells me how great it will be that I can taste foods more sharply after I stop smoking, I cringe.

Vicki -- Would tell us how much bitterness you taste in some of the foods listed in the article?

I would say that all of them taste bitter to me, but some more than others.

I enjoy the combination of bitter with other flavors in a not-too-sour grapefruit or a bar of semi-sweet chocolate.

I definitely do not care for brussels sprouts, dry wine, sharp cheese, or bittersweet chocolate.

I'm the odd nonnie out here!  For 41 years I was addicted to sugar!  LOVED sweet tasting things and couldn't stand anything sour.  Yech!

Have to admit though since being off sugar for a little more than a year, my taste buds are changing.  Not enough to vote that I love sour/bitter things, mind you, but they are changing.  I was eating some romaine lettuce the other day with some lamb chili on top and I noticed that the lettuce actually tasted sweet to me.  I couldn't believe that the sugar cube poppin' kid actually thought LETTUCE tasted sweet!  Wow, my tastebuds sure have come alive!

I'm not a big fan of sour or bitter tastes but on occasion have indulged with no desire to continue on. So I guess you could say I could  take em or leave em! Now if you had asked about spicy that would have been at the time of the scale for me. I love hot and spicy food.

hey! - I used to eat sugar cubes to as a kid!!! I just recently got out of my sugar addiction,....oh how i used to love it. But I also loved sour foods too.... my fav used to be sour patch kids, (quite the sour-sweet combo) tongue would be so raw after eating a whole bag of those,..but it was worth it everytime.

I'm very divided on this poll - literally.  Love, love absolutely love  bitter but really, really detest sour!!!

Loved bitter chocolate even as a child (Small's dark chocolate for men) mmmmm..... could not understand why my friends would not like it as I thought it was so much more chocolatey.   Never had a prob with broccoli.  Especiallly after eliminating sweet things from the diet, no leafy green is ever too bitter.

Now sour is another storey.  Vinegar actually hurts my stomach.  Even the smell turns me off.  Before BTD I knew I had a prob with vinegar & would ask for no dressings on salad when eating out, so no surprises when read not to consume.   Pickles - yuck!  Never lliked them & even took them off sandwiches, buns etc.  

This thread has got me thinking ..... I have an acid prob. :X   Maybe  most sour foods are just too acidic.  I've always been thin so maybe my stomach lining is a little too sensitive with  too much acid & burns things up too fast?    ??)

Can anyone relate to this?    ??) ??)

I don't really like acidy foods unless grapefruit is in that category.  I like grapefruit without any sweetener, and granny smith apples that really bite back (maybe that would classify as tart rather than sour or bitter).  I do like bitter sweet chocolate too.
I can leave pickles alone without any longings for them.
I also used to really crave sugar as a child but now not so much - especially the longer I stay away from it.

I had a b/f once who wouldn't eat raisins because they tasted bitter to him. I couldn't relate to that. But I don't like lettuce because it all tastes bitter to me. My DH can't relate to that.

I used to like tartare sauce, vinegar and lemon sherbets (even though they made my salivary glands hurt!) and I like/liked brussels sprouts and broccoli, but I don't like unsweetened chocolate, plain yoghurt or cauliflower.

OK now I've confused myself. Which is sour and which is bitter? (All I know is that the things I like are on the avoid list.) Does that mean I like sour but not bitter? Maybe we need another option on the poll PT!

Loathe and detest for me.  I am dumbfounded how people can enjoy candies like sour patch kids. ??)  Sweet and sour together is good in the correct proportions.  I don't tolerate bitter very well, but most veggies don't taste bitter to me.

I can eat a lemon, but can't even stand the smell of cauliflower and yoghurt.  Or cheeses, they just smell wrong (especially gruyere and blue).  I do miss things like sauerkraut, pickles, vinegar but now there's lemon juice.  Lots and lots of lemon juice.

I remember having vinegar candy once and loving it.

Broccoli is my favorite vegetable, but with my first pregnancy I suddenly understood why some people loathe it. Even the smell of it, and then eventually the sight of it, made me want to urp.

Hello Everyone,

I do not like sour or bitter foods. A little lemon on fish is fine; helps the fish go down. Of course I've eaten grapefruit in the past but only because it was supposedly effective for weight loss. I didn't like the sour taste. My daughters tell me that I will eat anything if I believe it is healthy regardless of whether or not I enjoy it and they're not half wrong.
It looks like I am in the minority in this poll.

I am in the minority also. I can't stand anything bitter and sour isn't to my liking either. I do use lemon on my fish and in my spinach but mixed with the food it isn't as bad and the food does taste better. But dill pickles---Yuck (I used to love sweet pickles)and yesterday I tasted a daikon radish and it had an after taste that was not pleasing to me at all. The only sour I can handle is "sweet and sour" tastes. They are good.

I enjoy bitter and sour tastes. I've been mostly sugar-free for so long that I can taste the natural sweetness in things. Lime juice tastes sweet to me, and I like how it  tastes in green tea.

A few weeks ago, my son and I were in a HFS and they were giving out free samples of an agave-sweetened chocolate. I found that the "chocolate with almonds" was way too sweet for me, although I enjoyed the "extreme dark" 85% chocolate. DS liked the 55% chocolates, but though the 85% wasn't sweet enough.

On my birthday, (while waiting for secretor test results) I debating buying a bar of that 85% chocolate. If it hadn't had vanilla in it I might have bought it, but I knew vanilla is an O-nonnie avoid, so I  bought some unsweetened baking chocolate instead. I figured I could melt it down, sitr in agave myself, and let it harden before eating it.

I got home, wanted chocolate, and didn't want to fuss with melting anything. So I tasted the unsweetened chocolate. Delicious!!!! Now I'm wondering why so many people ruin good chocolate by adding sugar and vanilla!

The best part is, nobody else in the household is going to want the unsweetened chocolate. It's all for me! ;)

Love the taste sour/bitter.  Never one was for the sugary sweets (unless, of course it was on something wheaty, but even then not too much) and with all the stuff that is around now...I usually just inhale in the candy section...remember what it does to me and I am outa there.   I do feel very proud that I can walk away.

Vinegar replacement is lemon/lime juice which is fine by me as I detox at the same time.  :D

I like those sour tastes in sour pickles (an avoid), those "super sour apple candies" (an avoid) and the bitter tastes in olives (avoids!)

I can eat bitter chocolate straight from the baking chocololate bar and still taste some kind of sweetness that is pleasing. Wierd.

I love sour and bitter much more: Dandelion,curcuma,zucchini,endives...

Sour and Bitter are actually two very separate categories.

Vinegar is sour. Lime juice is sour. Tamarind and some berries are sour. Some cheeses and yogurt, too. Sour cream, tomatoes, fermented foods, are considered Sour.
Endive is bitter. Dandelion greens, arugula and Kale are bitter. Rhubarb. Coffee. Turmeric, too.

In Ayurveda, these are very distinct:
Sour is good, and bitter is bad for Vata.
Sour is bad for Pitta and Kapha, but bitter is good for both.

Also note: Currently, the results are running exactly even, for 50.00% having a special love of sour and bitter tastes, and 50.00% not, with 108 votes in. So, there would seem to be no correlation.

I really like sour tastes, esp. in candys.  Not sure if I like bitter.  I like all tastes come to think of it!!  I like coffee straight and drink teas straight and steeped strong.

San J I think I tend towards pitta as my base and then vata and kapha are a tie for second.  Definitely tend towards pitta imbalances and when healthy have good pitta strengths at my disposal (instead of becoming enraged or not verbalizing thoughts well I talk directly and with command, have great digestion instead of acid reflux and burning.)

You are heterozygous at all 3 of the SNPs which are known to influence the ability to taste bitterness. This means you are better than average at detecting bitter tastes while young, but that this ability will decrease to less than average during adulthood. As a child you will probably hate brussel sprouts, and by early adulthood will discover that olives and brussel sprouts now taste good. A 2010 study shows the change bitter sensitivity which occurs over the lifespan (from bitter sensitive to less so) is more common in people with this genoset. Children with this genotype could perceive a bitter taste at lower PROP concentrations than could heterozygous adults. The threshold for adolescents was intermediate. The 3 SNPs are rs10246939, rs1726866, rs713598 in the gene TAS2R38

Hi there, PT.
Someone responded to your poll today, so it came up on the board.

The results of your three-answer poll show approximately 1/3 answering somewhere in the middle, worded so as to signify complete indifference to these tastes, which is itself an unusual answer.
The extreme likes and dislikes, however, show the likes to be over twice as numerous as the "can't stand" population.

Bear in mind that, as Carol the Dabbler (remember her?) replied years ago, you did not allow those who'd have answered (as I would have, had I met your Non-Secretor requirement) that they like /appreciate these tastes but don't fancy/crave them in an extreme, outstanding way.
So we have no way of knowing what percent of your most enthusiastic respondents actually simply find no plate complete without a sour and/or a bitter component (as most chefs would insist upon as a matter of course), rather than "taking or leaving" them, which, again, itself departs from most average culinary standards; they had no box, reflecting their own taste, to tick here.
That's a huge untouched "normal" ("Control", in Science-talk) ground.  :-/

Therefore the results don't imply any intense nonnie proclivity, sad to say.

Interesting input from Ayurveda, a system majoring in Tastes.
It recognizes six of them:
Bitter, Pungent, Astringent, Sweet, Sour, and Salty.
It also posits 3 doshas (constitutions as well as more temporary conditions):
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Each dosha is pacified by three tastes and aggravated by the other three.

This thread treats of two tastes, SOUR and BITTER.
SOUR pacifies Vata and aggravates Pitta and Kapha.
BITTER aggravates Vata and pacifies Pitta and Kapha.
This means that someone of predominantly Vata constitution, for example, would do well to de-emphasize the BITTER tastes on a plate and to include and favor the SOUR ones, etc.

We do not always fancy the taste we most need to emphasize.
We may in fact habitually fancy a taste that is aggravating our constitution or condition.

Also: Certain cuisines tend to favor some tastes over the others; individuals within cultures negating important tastes may need to concertedly make use of the culturally-neglected tastes they need.

I gravitate towards sweet and sometimes hot and spicy foods (i guess salty and pungent in the ayruvedic language).

Upon further consultation and experience, i find that i must be most wary of upsetting vata in the fall and winter and pitta in the summer.  Different needs for different points of the year.  I also learned to avoid use of an herb that can increase or amplify vata, but can use certain ones that may increase pitta without causing problems, as long as vata is not aggravated with it.  That being said, i dislike sour and bitter tastes!

My taste preferences change but sweet and hot are my favorites, and salty.
