Hi folks,
Lately I have noticed my shoulder joints getting notchy/ creaky...my knees have always been kinda creaky-noisy but I am suspecting that I am now entering an age where arthritis could be just round the corner...my hands are somewhat stiff in the mornings, but that goes away during the day...
I have a history of Ulcerative Colitis (18 years) and have had to take cortisone to control twice yearly flare-ups. Have been in remission one year now and am appx 18 months since my last cortisone dose...have had stiffness symptoms before which I thought were after effects of the cortisone since they would occur appx 3-4 months after stopping the cortisone.
Have Swami but am only able to follow the portion recommendations maybe 80%, food choices 100%...any last thoughts? Thanks!

When I was 52, my knees started to crackle when I bent down. After 6 months of no potatoes, it stopped.
It's hard to give up a staple of the diet, but it worked. Now, after several years of avoiding that avoid, I will have spuds once in a while. It's almost impossible to eat out without them. I don't eat out too often, but decided to enjoy them then. That compromise seems to work.

Avoid the nightshades and see what happens. Best wishes!

Hi,
potatoes are an avoid for me, so don't eat them bar maybe once a year...other nightshades I would eat are tomatoes and bell peppers in the shape of some colour in a salad or omelette, so while the quantities are small I probably would have some every day...rarely do I eat aubergines...

Exercise wise...I have a physical job (3 days) in which I lift light to heavy throughout the day and am up and down a ladder multiple times a day...Once a week a dance fitness class (sweaty), once a week Salsa dancing (nearly sweaty ...every other day one hour walk with the doggie. I tend to have an active lifestyle, am not one for sitting down for too long while the sun is up.

That's good advice, Lola...I kinda tend to do some stretches to un-kink myself in the morning, but probably could do those more focused and properly...

I do have the arthritis book, but I checked the arthritic box on my swami, so I tend to follow that instead, but like I said sticking to the exact portion frequency is sometimes not possible...strangely I get 4 (!) portions of carbohydrated per day of which I am probably only eating 2...am eating more nuts (mainly walnuts- diamond) instead than recommended
Do you think I should up the carbs and cut out the nuts?? (history of Ulcerative Colitis)

Hmmm...I will miss this forum...sigh...

Thanks folks for all your advice, now and over the years, and we'll meet on one of the other platform, I'm sure

Oh I'm so jealous of all the exercise you get to do!      My knees have gotten to the point where I can only do walking now for my exercise and even with that I have to be very careful.  I had a flare up 4 days ago and have not been able to do any walking.  It's hurting my heart because I love to walk.  I've only been abel to do my sauna's and thank God I have that.  Without ones knees exercise for a Hunter is almost impossible.  sigh.    Today I'm going to a Orthopedic Doc to discuss my options.  I want to try and save my knees for awhile longer before I have to do the big knee surgeries which they all have told me is coming.

Any small amount of the nightshades or other avoids flares me up.  I ticked all the boxes on my Swami for Arthritis as well and still I was allowed many things that caused pain in my joints.  I have to avoid several things on my Swami (learned through trial and PAIN).   And that's what you may have to do.  You also may find that the small amounts you are having are causing some of your issues.  Our bodies are affected by everything we put in them.. even small amounts and for me that has proven to be extremely true.

I don't know much about the nuts but I do know our systems are all slightly different as far as what we react to based on the disease history in our families and our own reactions to things.  I've found that experimentation with potential offending foods is the only way to figure it out.   Stop eating all the things you think might be causing an issue for awhile and then slowly introduce one back in and see what happens.   That's what I'm currently doing.

Much luck.... It's not a fun journey with this Osteoarthritis..

If all else fails cut out the grains, like Mother said.  You won't know unless you try.
