I have had a foul taste at the back of my throat for the last few months. For example, when I drink water it tastes as if the water is off. Similarly, sometimes when I eat food, this taste appears. Has anyone got any experience with this? Do you have any advise what it might be and what I can do to get rid of it?

There are several possibilities.

A couple of them are, candida (thrush), or a sinus infection. There are physical symptoms that would help identify each.

Thanks Lloyd! I have no other symptoms except for a slightly swollen throat at night or a hoarse voice when I talk too much.
RedLilac: No, I don't take any zinc at the moment. Should I take some?

Mouth breathing at night? It does sound as though it may be a mucus related taste - either from irritation or a mild infection, or something less likely. But you don't mention any fever, congestion or headache. So who knows.

Might try a lemon water regimen in the AM.

If I have a sore throat, I take a zinc lozenge when I go to bed.  It helps.  I don't like to take during day because it makes everything taste odd.  But if I'm really bad, then I'll put up with it.

Could be heavy metal toxicity. The fact that the taste appears after drinking water or eating makes me think you may have too many metals built up in your system and you're starting to notice some of the effects. Consuming Diatomaceous Earth daily would likely clear up the problem, and if you don't have heavy metal toxicity the DE would still likely be very good for you anyway. There's been a discussion on the benefits of DE on these forums the past few weeks if you want to check it out.

I'm in agreement. I've had these exact same symptoms before and it was caused by acid reflux.

Sleeping elevated keeps me from having that discomfort in my throat. The fact of the matter is that I would never go to sleep in the first place if I were not elevated!

Acid reflux - that is an interesting idea. Are there other symptoms or is a foul taste the only symptom?

You would probably notice some (acidic) burning in the throat and/or indigestion symptoms. Gagging is also possible in more severe cases. You might notice it more if you are lying down - especially on the stomach - or bending over.

I've read you can have reflux without symptoms.
Another possibility is a postnasal drip which also may not be felt.  Food/environmental sensitivities can cause this, mine improved greatly after going gluten/dairy free.

Isa's suggestion of tonsil inflammation could also be overlooked as symptomless. It could produce a foul taste.

My aunt often gets a hoarse voice, and I read somewhere that reflux can cause that.
But having said that I think I would have a a visit to the ear, nose and throat doctor, get tonsils and everything looked at.

General symptoms of acid reflux

http://www.foxnews.com/health/2013/09/25/acid-reflux-101-common-causes-symptoms-and-treatments/

I know that reflux for me, is set off by very specific foods....coffee, chocolate, citrus fruit.  It feels
like food is coming back up instead of going downwards and it's uncomfortable to sleep on my right
side.  I've always been told to sleep on my left side when dealing with reflux.

I can't say I have a particularly "foul" taste in the back of my throat unless I'm also dealing with a
post nasal drip....which for me, can often be allergy related.....so I think I'd be tasting mucous from
my sinuses.  What helps is nasal irrigation....a neti pot....

You could also try gargling with warm salt water....cleansing your nasal cavities and see if it helps
to eradicate that "taste".  And maybe try a tongue scraper to see if the taste lessens.  Difficult to
know if this foul taste is on your tongue or are your nasal passages in any way related. Sometimes taste
and smell can be confused. You know when you have a cold and can't breathe well, you also can't taste
anything very well.

I think the acid reflux might be my problem. I will investigate further.

Curious, if you suspect that sinus inflammation and postnasal drip may play a part in this, consider a very successful version of saline sinus rinse, such as a Nasaline.  There are videos on YouTube that demonstrate it.  I like it better than a Neti Pot.

Nasaline is much easier for me to use than a Neti pot.

I watched some youtube videos and I'll try to get the Nasaline. Hopefully we have it here in Australia.
