Last week a man aged 60 had his tonsils out.  He had an anxiety attract when he felt like he couldn't breathe normally.  He was disappointed that his doctor wouldn’t prescribe medication for that because it would interfere with his other medications.

People turn to pills for everything – sad.

Our medical doctor who passed away a few years ago was right out of school when we chose him as our doctor. He was humble and respected our decision to do many things naturally. We had a naturopathic doctor as well. This man never acted as if he was 'God' and would pull out his medical books right in front of you if needed at the beginning and make comments that it is one thing to learn through schooling and quite another to put the theory into practice! He was not quick with the medication as well making comments that it was very common for the elderly to be on anywhere from 12-15 medications...lots of them to fix the ill effects of the other!!!

how silly can one be ..............sorry I admit.. Peter; I didn't took the...whatever to come along with your link... but the thema made me.....

btw... we do have the same problems here... in Switzerland but no doc wants to admit that their recommendations are more then questionable.....Germany brought up a list of interactions between those medications coz they *wondered* why patients reacted in a manner like collapsing or even dying... jaminei....

The doctor I had been going to until that last visit, got so angry with me for not bowing down to his proclamation that I needed to take hypertension medication EVERY day, that he pronounced me as being "controlling!" In spite of the fact that I had told him repeatedly about the weakness I had from my BP getting too low. He is totally and completely controlled by drug companies. He knows I take Hawthorn with very good results, and it drives him nuts! Good!    He is a transplant here from New Orleans after the Katrina fiasco. His family is highly respected there, so, naturally he is having a hard time adjusting to being an unknown.

There are lots of disturbing leads in this article but the one that really riles me is the fact that these companies spend over twice as much on promotion than on research. This indicates that a significant portion of the public is willing to go for the quick fix'. It leans on doctors a little to keep the patient happy as well.

Taking it one step further, when and why did doctors become so concerned with salesmanship and promoting the appearance of benefit to their patients?

One thing that surprised me is the number of women vs. men on medication.  I wonder if boys on ADD drugs was added into those figures or if they are only counting adults.  So many boys are diagnosed with ADD and other learning disabilities these days vs. girls, although many girls exhibit the same signs but are not diagnosed.

I have to admit, after fighting it for many years, we did put our son on ADD meds and it helped him tremendously.  He only takes it when he needs it.  I tried all the natural remedies, but nothing seemed to help.  I often feel guilty that I waited so long.  There is my confession for the night!

However, I still do think that ADD meds are highly over-prescribed, particularly with boys.
