As far as I have been able to determine, wasabi is the Japanese name for horseradish.

Wasabi is a different species. Horseradish is used when people are too cheap to pay for  actual wasabi.

I didn't know this, however I'm glad to hear, because I hate wasabi, I haven't liked it on anything I've ever tried, but I love horseradish. I was once told they were the same.
