I have sensitive skin.

I've noticed that almost all of the all-natural shampoos available at my local co-op are coconut oil based, and I'm wondering if that's a problem.  It stands to reason that lectins could be absorbed trans-dermally, doesn't it?  I've switched to an olive oil soap and lotion, but the co-op is having a hard time finding me an olive oil shampoo and conditioner that doesn't have coconut oil in it.  What do you all use?  Did you have to change your body care products to fit your type?  Am I just being paranoid?  Thanks in advance.

In most cases, it is OK to use avoid products on the skin.  Once the avoid lectin intake is reduced, the body stops reacting to the external avoids.  In the few people who still have issues obviously still need to find avoid free products, but if you aren't having problems from them now, you're probably OK using them.

Most of the problems I had I didn't even know were problems until I changed my diet.  What kind of reactions would I look for to determine whether or not to use an avoid externally?

I would guess that most of the problem that an externally applied avoid would cause would be skin problems like rashes, bumps, or pus pockets, etc...

There could always be more internal issues, but I think they would be rare...

Skin is for all intensive purposes water tight.

Coconut oil doesn't have offending lectins (as far as I know),but rather the type of oil in it directly influences cholesterol production (by liver). This can probably cause unfavored reactions for a sensitive liver and/or cardio system. Plus it isn't omega 3 rich like others.

Dr. D says coconut oil is fine for skin btw.

If you happen to be a Nonnie, no, you're not being paranoid - also - how long have you been on the diet? It took me a year to not react to coconut oil as a Nonnie. Now I can use it with no problem as the diet slowly breaks down and removes damage in my body that makes me react. Also - years ago my ex exclusively used "kiss my face" products when an olive oil base was needed.

I don't know yet if I am.  I just don't eat anything if it's not Ben/Neu on both lists.  I have the iPhone app, so that makes it really easy.  Kiss My Face, yes!  I forgot they made shampoo!  I'm using their soap and lotion, but I didn't even think of that!  I think I might even have a bottle in my bathroom closet from a couple years ago...

In the case of products designed to be used in the shower, one could also inhale a product's vapors.  Symptoms would mimic the reaction you'd get from a noxious cleaning product: light-headedness, irritability, shortness of breath, poor concentration, nausea, etc.

A good store would give you a refund of a product when you return the unused portion.

Good luck!

My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

If you get some castille soap you can use it on your hair until you body settles down.

I now use coconut oil (raw and organic) as a moisturiser and even use it on my hair and my whole body from time to time.

it can dry out skin when the air is cold and or dry/windy even then.

you can also use it under your arms and on your feet to draw out waste.
