So before switching to the O-Type diet, I was a raw vegan.  I had to snack or "graze" all day long to keep myself upright.  Now, I'm not even hungry and I find myself dipping into the (O-type approved) trail mix just because I'm bored.  I looked up a list of things to do with your hands when you quit smoking, and I'm doing a couple of those things, but I'm still open to suggestions.  What do you all do to keep from snacking?

I have herbal tea after supper while reading.  Then I brush my teeth before I get any notions in my head about a "proper" snack.

I don't watch TV, so I'm usually turning the pages of a book or eReader.  Or I might be playing Sudoku on the tablet.  But, being an engineer, I unfortunately found a hands-free way to keep a book or tablet propped open on pillows on my lap.

If you can get a cat to nap on your lap, it's a very effective deterrent for getting up for a snack.  OTOH, I've missed my bedtime many times because of this.


My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

I have the neediest cat in the world, so there's no problem there.  The trouble I'm having isn't at home as much as it is at my day job where I'm at a desk all day long.

OK, if this is happening at work, then I guess needlework (such as knitting or crocheting) isn't going to help.

Try having a glass or bottle of water or unsweetened herbal tea (such as peppermint) to reach for instead of food. Maybe keep the trail mix in a less convenient location- so it's there if you're truly hungry, but not available for mindless snacking when you're not.

See, it's little stuff like that that I miss...  *puts trail mix in desk drawer*  It's amazing how much more of a pain it seems to have to open a drawer to get food, but it really does help.  Thank you for that.

I'm not supposed to be using company internet unless I'm on a break, but that doesn't seem to stop anyone else, and I think having something to type into (forum box, Facebook, LiveJournal, etc...) is helpful.

I paint, sometimes knit, put compliant snacks in a very small paper cup (the 3 oz paper cup that
is used in the bathroom) and I know that is my singular portion.  If I hand my my husband a little
cup of nuts and take my own, we might be watching TV and eating one nut at a time, knowing when the cup is empty, we're done.  No dunking our hands into a bag or container which contains way more portions than we should be eating.

Cut your snack pieces into small portions so the hand to mouth routine is repeated more often than with large pieces.

Chew each mouthful mindfully so you're not eating more food before you've swallowed and
fully emptied your mouth.

If I'm going to eat 3 fruits per day and some of them are dried fruit, then everything is sitting
in my refrigerator in one spot.  I can go back as many times as I like until my one spot is empty.

Same with nuts.

Plan ahead.  If you're used to eating all day long, you are going to have to undo the randomness
of eating.  I like to cut apples into many slices and dunk pieces in almond butter or peanut butter.  That way it takes me quite a long while to eat one apple.

Honestly what works the very best is using portion sized cups and planning ahead.  Never eat
out of a container without knowing what one portion looks like.

You can still eat many raw foods....vegetables, fruits.  Most of us are supposed to be getting
5-6 cups of vegetables per day.  Raw or cooked, I don't think it matters.

do you have cravings or is this 'snaking' an old habit pattern?  if it's an old habit pattern, one has to use mind tricks to trick the mind away from the pattern.  Personally I have a strong connection with God so I just repeat the name of God and get my mind concentrated on the next task at hand when the thoughts begin to creep it.  It works...

I am part of Overeaters Annonyomous  where we look dat the reasons behind why we are craving or wanting to reach or why we are bored.  There are a million things to do instead of eat when you are bored.. Possibly your life feels dull.. empty, lifeless.. possibly your love life is empty..maybe you are unhappy at your job... etc., etc.

Only you know on a deep level what might be going on and sometimes one has to sit down and write or meditate to figure these things out.

Cravings are a total horrific BITc... and the only thing that keeps me free of cravings is following my Swami as closely as I can everyday.  I do not do well with cravings.. they are like a demon that comes in and works to steal my sanity and ruin my life.  I find that following a very balanced eating regime keeps me sane and craving free.  Over time I have learned my trigger foods and I avoid them like the plague.

I am not interested in snacking any more and this is from a person who at one time could never even imagine not having some kind of food in my mouth 24/7.

Luckily I'm not having any kind of cravings.  My stomach is growling right now and I don't even want to eat.  It's just a habit.

To keep from snacking:

1) Freshly stewed beef (young veal rumpsteak) for breakfast + 1 scrambled egg with the beef gravy.

2) 1 Glycoscia in the morning.

My snacks:

1) Apples, 2-3 daily.

2) Almond butter mixed with carob powder. Used to be daily. Now (with the Glycoscia) 2-3 times a week.

3) Cocoa paste coins! (dark bitter) Don't need chocolate anymore. Every.... ? Comfort snack before bedtime, as I was used in childhood.

4) Rice cakes - now seldom. In the beginning of BTD I kept huge quantities of rye crackers and used to nibble on them all the time. They saved me from wheat.

Where do the hands go?

Washing the dishes, squeezing rag to dry the kitchen counter, hand washing clothes, playing musical instruments.

This is a set of exercises for the meridians which I found last Sunday and keep sending it to friends.

She explains in Hebrew, but imho it's worth while to watch as is: warm up exercises, "Knocking on Life's Doors" exercises (to make the chi flow, excellent for recovery from illnesses), exercises for main blood vessels, and then one exercise for each pair of meridians, in order of the Chinese biological clock.

This may sound super-weird to ex-vegans. I was never a vegan, but I abstained from meat/poultry for more than 22 and a half years (Jan 1985 to end Sept 2007), 17.5 years of which I also abstained from fish.

Giving up smoking is like losing a child... it would be horried to think of the pain, the sorrow, the love left over: "Where WILL YOU go with all that love" was a question posed to the mom who lost her son.  I think smoking is just as much a loss.  It will take time..

Call a friend, put gloves on, pick up a heavy book, or a favorite book, or write the pages for a book..  Eat right, eat well, eat with a friend, in a new place. Change your drink, change the furniture, change the environment..

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!
