Does anyone know of a seller of hickory nuts who is accredited and/or rated by the BBB?  Thanks.

The hickory nuts arrived today.  I am looking forward to eating them over the next several months.  I ordered them from Casa Bella Porcelain at etsy.com.

Spring:  Sorry it took me so long to respond.  I just saw your request.  http://www.etsy.com, seller = casabella porcelain, "Hickory Nuts For Crafting/Wreath Making/Decoration/Wildlife".  The seller has assured me that these hickory nuts are edible for people and not just for wildlife.  I haven't eaten any of them yet but will in the next month or so.

I have searched through this site supposedly looking for hickory nuts, but the delicious looking foods got me totally and completely sidetracked!! I had to get off the place before I started ordering everything in sight! WOW! That stuff looks soooo good!

I just tried to get a shell off of one of the hickory nuts with a nutcracker and couldn't do it.  Does anyone know of the best way of getting the shell off?

AB Joe:  I'll try this method.  I also am soaking some of the nuts in water in the hope that the shells will soften.  So far they haven't.

You have to be careful with soaking - you don't want to let them mold or mildew...

I soaked my hickory nuts in water in a glass jar for 48 hours.  After 24 hours of soaking I emptied out the soaking water and put fresh soaking water into the jar.  After the 48 hours of soaking I placed the hickory nut in a nutcracker, towards the top of the nutcracker, lined up on the vertical crack.  I placed one hand around the nutcracker at the top to hold the nut in place and squeezed the nutcracker with the other hand.  The hickory nuts opened quickly and cleanly into two halves.  I then used a metal hook that came with the nutcracker at the time of purchase to remove the nut kernel.

And we can't help but wonder how in the world a little squirrel can get into one in no time! Glad you found a way to get these things open!
