So, supplementing with probiotics and magnesium may decrease intestinal permeability.

I have found transdermal magnesium and HCL to be a perfect combo for my digestion. More absorption and more breaking down foods.

italybound,
I ordered some from amazon and also got some from The Vitamin Shoppe. The combination of magnesium, HCL and fasting from dinner at 6pm until 2pm the next day has done amazing things for my digestion and blood sugar. I also lost about 5 pounds in a few days ALL in my abdominal area which was always sticking out a bit. Now it's very flat and I can feel so much less stress in my digestion.

Good for you, Mother!! I will have to tell you about a "diet" I went on several years ago where you only ate carbs once a day, and the other meals had to be nothing but meat/fish/poultry and veggies such as salads. I lost weight at first, but being human, I began to figure out all the carbs I could stuff myself with during that one hour carb fest. (Foods I ordinarily wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole!) I would almost have them all lined up on the counter! And they got sweeter and sweeter! You can imagine what this did to the size of my stomach! NOT what we want! They cautioned about gorging on carbs and not eating a balanced meal during that hour, but after going without carbs for twenty-four hours, that advice soon went straight out the window! It probably would work fine for an O-type, though.

Spring,
Was that The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet? I did that and that's when I first discovered low carb was for me. Then of course I proceeded to Atkins and then BT. A few times in between I did the 'healthy grains' thing and quickly remembered grains are not my friend. Funny how things work...

Mother,
That is very interesting on transdermal magnesium and HCL helped your digestion.
I have recently bought a spray magnesium, but also use capsules.
How do you use the transdermal, frequency and time of day?  Does it matter?

Mother, can't remember whether it was the Carb Addict's diet or not but that sounds right.

I did Weight Watchers and GENO at the same time for a little while. Lost twelve pounds and several inches. Three of them in my hips. It was totally unexpected. I happened to notice that a skirt I was wearing was really loose around the hips one day, so I decided to measure for the first time. I had lost three inches, but I didn't believe it! Measured three times before it began to sink in!

This is the transdermal (mag oil) I use.....cheapest I've found and effective.

http://www.swansonvitamins.com/q?kw=magnesium+oil&x=0&y=0

Supposed to spray yourself 40 times....ie 40 total pumps.  I spray 10 on each leg, 10 on each arm.
Actually I pump 10 sprays into my hand and spread it around.  Wait 20-30 minutes....shower it
off.  Once per day. Or else, pour a few cups into a bath....or a few ounces into a foot bath.
It's sometimes too strong for newbies.....itches....and that's because mag oil (transdermal mag)
is alkaline and the body might be too acidic.  It can be diluted and sprayed.  When I began,
I bought a large sized bottle....a gallon.....diluted it by half....half water, half mag solution.
After a few weeks, I was able to use it full strength.  I alternate with epsom salts....which is
magnesium sulphate whereas magnesium oil (that's what they call it although both are
considered transdermal because magnesium is absorbed through the skin)....so mag oil is
magnesium chloride.  Both could be ingested....but I wouldn't suggest ingesting epsom salts
because it can cause diarrhea.

Anyway, that's the protocol....40 sprays, first thing in the AM....then shower it off.  It can cause
rapid detox.  It can start the body detoxing heavy metals. If you notice side effects, back off
and use less...work back up.

The best thing about WW is that it makes you very aware of your fat intake.  WW is much more
liberal with low fat foods and especially high fiber foods.  You figure out how to fill up without
wasting points. I do great when I incorporate WW with SWAMI, only then, it starts to feel like
I'm dieting.  I'd like SWAMI to work for weight control without having to deny myself portions
I'm supposedly allowed to eat.  Still, I think my SWAMI is way too liberal with nuts/seeds/overall
fats.  The fact that I could eat a whole avocado and not call it a fat.  WW would consider avocado
to be a fat....and I wouldn't be able to eat very much of it if I also wanted to be eating nuts, seeds, ghee, full fat cheese.

But WW makes me totally aware of the importance of filling up with vegetables, salads, fruits,
whole grains/beans.  And forces me to measure carefully all my fats.

Spring, this is why you lost inches and pounds when you combined WW with SWAMI.  You obviously ate less calories and lowered your fat intake.

I use the swansons one too, got it at amazon and Vitamin Shoppe sells one in a white and blue bottle, I don't remember the name. I apply it by spraying it into my hands and rubbing too but I do 10 sprays 4x a day. It does leave a dry residue, the salts but until I built up my stores I didn't care. I rubbed it on my stomach and back during the day and wiped the residue off later. It did sting some areas but just for a few minutes. It really doesn't anymore and that is supposed to be a sign that you've built up your stores. I also did the foot baths with epsom salts. Both were very relaxing but too much mag oil at night put me into a good sleep BUT I had nightmares, probably detox. You need mag to produce HCL and you need HCL to absorb mag. Transdermal mag is one of the most absorbable forms and doesn't cause loose stools. I do take mag for constipation too. I try to apply 400 mg mag a day and it took about 6 weeks for ALL the stinging to go away. It stung the most on top of my shoulders and legs and arms only slightly. I  always used full strength but diluting it is a good idea if it stings too much. IF it stings, you're deficient. Between the mag and HCL I did have some detox side effects but I know I needed both and all is great now. With alot of supps I get side effects but I guess I know when they're detox or when my system just doesn't like them. This was detox but again, I know I needed both. I read 'why stomach acid is good for us' and 'the magnesium miracle'. They kind of go hand in hand.

About twenty-six years ago I went on a low fat diet and lost 25 pounds. I was eating bagels   and fat-free cream cheese   every day. That was for snacks!  I felt wonderful! Actually, I was too skinny, though. I hate to think what that kind of diet would do to me today! For meals I was eating lean meat, poultry, etc., lots of veggies and some carbs. And I don't remember a time in my life when I didn't eat nuts! And I have always been active. We had a small grocery nearby that sold a lot of meats. He would grind lean sirloin steak to make ground beef for me and sold it for $2.00 per pound. He would grind it while I stood there waiting for it. The only time I ever ate any beef that had a lot of fat in it was when my husband was in graduate school in Virginia! But we were finally able to afford Porterhouse during the second year!

I tried Magnesium supplements but they did not work for me. I would rather just eat healthy, but that is my opinion.

I like Dr.D supplements and that is it.

thanks for your good suggestions.
I do get some tingling when I use it so I guess I need more magnesium.

I order from the same place Chloe does, but I usually buy the magnesium chloride flakes and mix it with water. I did start out with the spray bottles and now I re-use those bottles.

When I want to get magnesium for spraying on my skin, I go to my local health food store and buy Nigari, which is powdered magnesium chloride.  It is what is used to make the curd form in soy milk, when making tofu.  I made my own tofu for 20 years, before I knew it was toxic for type B's

This saves shipping costs.
