Type II diabetes comes from a diet too high in simple carbs over time, without the proper nutrients to support the pancreas. The pancreas "gets tired" from working too hard without  the right support, and stops working properly. There are other effects too- sometimes it's not just the pancreas but the cells are not accepting the insulin properly, even if the pancreas is still working fine.

Too much sugar can contribute. Wheat can also contribute for many people, between damaging lectins (which are not damaging for some) and the high GI of many wheat products. Other foods are also part of the problem, such as hydrogenated oils. Processed baked goods like twinkies and donuts contain all of these substances, and are a big part of the diet for many people who end up with diabetes.

Plus, there are genetic and epigenetic factors. Some can eat poorly their whole lives and not get diabetes. Others can eat low sugar, wheat-free, and still end up with it.

If you read any of Dr. D.'s books, you will promptly see that individuals have different causes for the same problem...  For instance, reading page 67 of Eat Right 4 Your Type (TYPE O) talks about Corn lectin affecting production of insulin, often leading to diabetes and obesity.  It also (pg. 63) talks about wheat leading to weight gain in Type O.

There are other cause and effect statements for the other types...

Sugar & wheat (especially processed into white bread) are essentially the same as far as our bodies are concerned.  They both load the blood fairly quickly with glucose.

My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

The getting of diabetes or even Syndrome X / the onset of body breakdown, is Genetic.. even eating right will not prevent it..

Eating better with all sorts of learning is no surefire way to avoid it, only the degree of how badly one gets it, is to be influenced with food.

There are things you can do, but a lot more is to be understood ..

Getting Diabetes is No ones fault!  It happens like blue eyes.

How one reacts to diabetes, is another story .. way to much misinformation is babbled on the subject.. Some info is cruel and misapplied.

I think that the question here is deep and ought to be discussed in many more ways, the question is on to something.. !!!! but not just for the sake of why.. as you asked to settle a dispute, all of the answers are wrong... only outcome answers might make dramatic differences.. On that we should have much wider discussions for all people and especially those who Genetically are predisposed to getting it...

Same answers on what to consider, are in all the above posts, but the cause is not food, it is Genes! Inherited!  To avoid it in new Generations, do not make babies with anyone who has diabetes in their families.

Once you get diabetes then learning much more is important.  I am not suggesting I know enough about it, but my other posts deal with this diabetes effect almost daily and answers and enlightenment comes in many forms.  I like your question.. now for the answers... hahahahaha 'Later...' Good luck .. but please take away this...

No food or behavior is the cause for diabetes... No one is guilty of getting it!

Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

That's interesting.  I was diagnosed with diabetes with high blood sugar then after celiac diagnosis and stopping all gluten I never had high blood sugar again.  I have read that certain genes (HLA-DQ2,HLA-DQ8 are two) are linked to celiac, diabetes, rhematoid arthritus....there's supposedly 40 different genes they suspect.  Not everyone with these problem genes gets these diseases but it seems that some stress/trauma may turn the genes on....I guess that's why diet can turn off defective genes and keep you from getting certain problems.

It will be great when they figure it all out and this is common knowledge so more people can benefit from the information.

Lola: You are correct.. I do not have the cancer gene from moms side.. all the rest of the family had cancers starting at 20..

Isa:  Yes Diabetes can be reversed.. Yes but one has to work at it... and understand it for each person his own.

Years ago people with diabetes died after 3 years.. today we live with it.

For me BTD saved me from getting it early or having it badly.

also links to magnesium depletion.

just learned the other day that some bad bacteria can steal magnesium from an already deficient diet and thrive.

andrea posted an article that obesity is linked with certain bacteria in the gut. healthy flora are important.

also links to mercury. mercury messes with the enzymes that digest gluten and dairy.

wheat belly author did a test on dr. oz audience (that show requires a thinking cap filter)- about half the folks spiked sugar higher from wheat than a candy bar. (but half did not). hmmm....

also digestive enzyme deficiency gives pancreas extra work. this is probably why the raw foods diet gets people well quickly (ala Gabrielle Cousins Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days). pancreas can rest with the live enzymes and repair with all the nutrients. this does not lead me to the conclusion that everyone needs to be raw vegan.

food is depleted compared to years ago, this contributes to lack of support even when eating "healthy" and not processed c**p.

any impairment to detoxification or digestion is going to cause issues to not only the pancreas, but the whole body.

i was not "diabetic" but certainly felt the effects of hypoglycemia and sugar swings for a time. that has gotten better. don't think of anything as a label for YOU or you might be prone to live it. keep working toward greater health and you will progress... best to you.

always multiple factors in any issue and they are always personal to the individual. if you find a doc that gets that, you are halfway there.

this book would be on my reading list if that were my issue http://drhyman.com/bss/drhyman.....m=bloodsugarsolution i just read "ultramind solution" by the same author- put on my prescription list by my doc. brought together a whole lot of learning i had accumulated and added many of the missing pieces for me.

dr. d has individual issue books. there is one on diabetes and blood type.

Good points you raise in your post.  Some I knew and some I didn't.
The mercury bit I didn't know, but makes sense as anything clogging up the liver is going to cause issues.  Sandra Cabot, an Aussie Doctor wrote a book about the Liver and how if we clean that up we can clean up many issues.  She considers it our main organ.
