So, as a rehabilitation educator with a focus on health promotion, my goal is to research and assess how to assist inidivudals with disabilities in gaining a better quality of life through healthy diet and exercise.

that being said, I am overweight for my height ( in my standard) and how can i help others if i am not as healthy as i can be. Does anyone understand how this can be frustrating when i need to practice what i preach?

i only need to lose about 5 pounds, but still, i want to feel vibrant so i can help the community.

I do understand, I'm an exercise science major that did not make it to the gym even once from August through December last year! I'm better now, but sometimes life hands you interesting challenges and you have to figure them out

Worrying about your weight is likely to cause you to gain weight, not lose it. Have you had your thyroid checked?

thanks for understanding. yep, it is in the normal range. in fact, it is more on the over active side.. dr said i have a high metabolism. it is not about the number at all. i know i need to slow down and chew my food.. i am always in a rush and that is not good for digestion.

5'3 almost 5'4.... small to med frame... what is a good number?

A good number is more about body composition than about weight. For a female between the age of 18-34 a low body fat % is 20% , medium ( a good place to be) is 28%, high is 35% and anything greater than that is considered obese.

I don't like hieght vs weight (BMI) for indicating health, it isn't useful at all.

Another measure that is useful is waist/ hip ratio, low risk is <0.72, moderate risk: 0.72 to 0.78, high risk: 0.79 to 0.84

I do understand the difference between being thin and feeling well, I am considered thin but sometimes if I'm not eating well I can feel "puffy" or "fat" even though anyone would think I was crazy if I said that outloud. It really is about how you feel.

Chewing your food well is a good thing! Make sure that any food that is not meat is "al dente". A calorie is NOT always a calorie. The first law of thermodynamics does not apply to food. Even though a cooked, mushy carrot has the same number of calories as a raw carrot, the mushy carrot is partially digested already, the body has little effort to extract those calories.

Mindful eating is always helpful too, enjoy your food, taste it, appreciate it. Listen to what your body wants, not what the tastebuds might be asking for. Sit at a table when you eat, not standing by the sink (voice of experience here   ).

Marjorie - I think you should stop being so hard on yourself (and I am not writing this in a critical manner but out of concern). Just the fact that you are in rehabilitation education means that you have a big heart with the desire to be of help to others.

You may seem "overweight" to yourself. Being 5 lbs. over your ideal weight does not render you to be overweight. I am learning that the GTD has made me gain weight (after the steroid weight loss) but my clothes from my 100 lbs. (I have a super small frame for my height - just genetics) days still fit.

The fact that you have an issue that you are struggling with will make you much more human to all the people you come have to reach out to. In fact, I make mistakes in front of my students when I am teaching and engage them by having them work with me to solve the problem together. Having had memory issues from steroids which caused a temporary learning disability made me more compassionate towards my students with learning disabilities. As a result, I am much more patient and have successfully helped my student with a learning disability pass my class with very high marks.

Please don't be hard on yourself. You are so capable of loving others... try loving yourself, too. It is easier said than done because I have fallen into the same trap of mental self-flagellation. Blood types O's are perfectionists by nature and hunters seem to have a high level of anxiety when things do not go their way (my father is an O hunter and Asian - meaning, double trouble).

Be nicer to your and love yourself. You have all the best to offer everyone and yourself! Hugs!

So nice to hear from you and thank you!!! I am trying to just focus on my health! However, it is hard to see the difference when I am not sure if my weight needs to decrease or not? I dont want to fool myself into thinking that I am healthier at this weight.

Yes, I am a hunter and I do strive for perfection which can cripple me from enjoying my life, thank you for the reminder to be kind to myself. Also, as a TA , I like your thoughts on the student interaction. I am excited to start teaching rehabilitation education with a focus on health promotion, but I need to make sure I am doing what I need to do to be healthy!!

Congrats to you about the new program!! are you still at Notre Dam? I am in WI now

You're only 5 pounds overweight. I don't think anybody is likely to look at you and think "she's overweight- I won't trust her for nutritional counseling." I'm not saying you shouldn't keep working to get yourself in balance, but I don't think you need to worry about appearing hypocritical. I've been hovering between 25 and 30 pounds overweight for the past several years- and it's likely that many of your clients will be as well. Nobody who needs to lose 20+ pounds is even going to "see" 5 pounds as being "overweight" in the first place!

Relax. Take this off your list of worries.

Hi!

Glad to see you are doing well. Remember, health is the key to your success in anything to you do. Being five pounds "overweight" will make you more human. Recently, some researchers found that people are intimidated by overly fit and muscular fitness trainers. So, more proof to embrace yourself.

WI is a great state. Are you are UW-M? If so, great school! I left Notre Dame last year. I will PM you with details.

Hypocritical would be my mother's client's son who is a heart transplant surgeon and weight almost 280 lbs. He does transplants and bypasses but drinks about 4-5 bottles of whiskey a week and refuses to lose weight. He is in his early 40s. Let's say my mother's client (the parents) tried to do an intervention on him - begging him to take some time off from his job to take care of his own health.
