A little over a week ago I posted on the discussion about the Flu Epidemic that I caught a flu bug that my children all had before me. I mentioned how difficult it is for me (speaking from previous experience) to remain healthy while caring for sick kids. A couple people recommended trying thieves oil to kill the germs in the house. After reading excellent reviews of a specific brand of thieves oil, I purchased it immediately in the hopes that it would reduce the symptoms once we started using it.

The day it arrived was the worst day of the sickness for me. I had seen the doctor the evening before in the hopes that he would prescribe something narcotic to help me sleep as I had gotten very little sleep the previous couple nights due to intense sinus and throat pain. 3 ibuprofen in rotation with 3 regular strength acetaminophen would barely touch the pain and of course would wear off after 4 hours, so then I'd take more to avoid being in almost unbearable pain. Wouldn't you know, the prescription cough syrup literally made me sick to my stomach and I ended up feeling worse than if I hadn't taken it. I did not take it again after that first dose.

It was amazing how quickly the oil began working as I rubbed it on my feet diluted in olive oil, and also rubbed it under my nose to continually breathe in the fragrance. I did the same for my kids. Also, I put a few drops in my humidifier which I ran continuously in my room the next couple days. Within a couple days I was resuming normal activities and had very little sinus pain. In addition, the lung and sinus mucous was nearly clear which normally after several days of intense congestion would be breeding an inevitable sinus infection. Even my older daughter, who usually gets a bad barking cough with a cold about once a year, had disappearing coughing symptoms after 2 or 3 days of using the oil. She only had the cough a little over a week total and normally these coughs take 3 or 4 weeks to completely clear up regardless of what you treat her with.

One more mention, my husband, the lucky dog, never did come down with the virus and maybe he wouldn't have anyway without the oil, but he was just starting to feel slightly mucousy with a scratchy throat so the oil may have "saved" him from getting this strain of virus.

I can't attribute the quick disappearance of symptoms directly to anything else because I've never seen recoveries from such an intense virus happen this quickly. We were doing the elder/echinacea tea, vitamin c, vitamin d, as well as strictly following our diets the best we could, but they didn't seem to be having any significant impact on our recoveries, although I'm sure we could have all been sicker without them. I don't want to discourage anyone from using the above listed supplements, but there's no doubt in my mind the thieves oil was the catalyst in returning all of my family to health so quickly.

I bought Germ Fighter Synergy Essential Oil Blend from Amazon with Prime shipping for $14.99. It's not considered authentic thieves oil, but I figured if so many people had success with it and it was affordable, it was what was worth giving it a try. Glad I did!

AKArtlover, I wonder if the oil would work against the thieving politicians in D.C. that want to rob us of our hard earned money to support their outrageous spending habits? If only!

Nice. History of this, I heard was that during the plague these theives would use this to protect themselves as they went around taking advantage of those who had just passed away. Not sure the truth of that, but it's a fun story, no?

I sure appreciate the Thieves' Oil!  I've got a few drops in a steaming pot of hot water, even as we speak!

Yes, AKArtlover, I heard the same opinions on the origin of thieves oil. It's hard to say when during the Midieval times the thieves oil came to be. I find it very fascinating when an ancient natural remedy to prevent disease "survives" so many centuries, so the thieves oil definitely must have been tried and true during the worst epidemics and plagues of the past. However, a thief would have to be incredibly gutsy or stupid to risk catching the plague himself by continuously exposing himself to dead corpses or dying victims of the plague. How would they know the oil was effective enough to prevent contaminating themselves?

Amazone, I use acetaminophen very rarely and my preferred choice of pain reliever for general aches and pains is ibuprofen. However, ibuprofen really tears up my stomach so when I'm not eating well I feel I have no choice but to use acetaminophen. Yes, I know it's hard on the liver but I don't feel like I"m suffering from a congested liver as I usually have sinus stuffiness, mucous, and fatigue/brain fog as a result. I've been feeling very good the last several days with just a minimal amount of post-nasal drip left, which is probably because I"ve resumed eating compliant dairy again (with lactase enzyme). I think my daily lemon or lime drinks, usually twice a day, is benefiting whatever sluggish liver I had when I got sick. Thanks for bringing up the concern, though.

I made my own hand sanitizer with Thieves' Oil (I posted the recipe). It is also safe enough to drink as a tincture in your tea and make throat spray. The mixture is potent enough to kill MRSA, though. You may want to look into making it since it costs a lot to buy the pre-made stuff.

Now, that's really cool!

More likely, the name originated long after the plagues were over  by merchants trying to promote their products. If it really was widely used during the plague itself, it would have been considered conventional medicine, not something that only outlaws knew about.

The legend is they came up with it, robbed and robbed and when they were caught and questioned caved in giving the recipe in exchange for lighter sentences.

Fun story. I could see how it could sell some bottles. I could also imagine politically how it could have been kept quiet if it were true.

They apparently started making essential oils in the 12th century and wasn't the plague during the 15th century?

I can just see the robbers, with bandanas treated with Thieves' Oil, tied over their mouth and noses.

OK, but I don't know if they were selling essential oil blends in the 15th century, or used the term "thieve's oil." I also don't know how widespread the use of essential oils was- just because the technology existed doesn't guarantee that everybody used it.

This link explains a lot of the history behind the bubonic plague and the origin of thieves oil. Not sure how accurate it is though.

Everybody is not using everything now, either, so that makes sense!

Well, it is very interesting whether it only has a smidgen of truth in it! I'm going to try some of it anyway. My husband's Gramps was always trying out things, and he lived to be 95. Had wonderful health right up to the last too.
