Has anyone ever experienced acne/breakouts from the BTD or GTD? I did the GTD 5 years ago and discontinued due to excessive breakouts. I decided to give BTD a go this time around and sure enough I'm getting the same breakouts around my neck, top of my shoulders and chest. *Note: Haven't had a breakout in 5 years since last doing the GTD, so its not my shampoo, laundry soap, etc.

I ordered SWAMI and it should be delivered tomorrow. I'm hoping that will find the food(s) that I need to rule out. Is it an allergy? Am I detoxing?

I've also written another post regarding my secretor status. I was a secretor 5 years ago, but I am repeating the test next month. Could eating for the wrong secretor status be causing this?

Acne/boils/etc. is one way the body uses to eliminate toxins from the body.  It is my guess that by eliminating the avoids from the diet, your body has less toxic input to deal with, so it has more energy to devote to removing any stored toxic material.

Unless you are eating foods that you didn't eat while not following one of Dr. D.'s plans, I really doubt that this is allergy.

Ditto ABJoe.  Your skin is your largest elimination organ.  It's my understanding that in Chinese medicine, 'where' you get acne will indicate what is wrong/out of balance.

Sharing with the best of intentions.

Knowledge is power.  SWAMI gives you the diet that will unlock the key to better health, and it's all based on your unique individuality.

Oh good! That actually makes me feel better! I can handle having breakouts and acne for a couple weeks if it means it eventually goes away post detox. I have Hashimoto's, and 90% of my breakouts are on my neck... Chinese medicine is definitely right on that one!

Take three handfuls of fresh thyme. Dice up.

Mix with 2 cups alcohol (Everclear is one with high proof but can use vodka instead)

Let sit for one day covered.

Add 3 cups water. Solution will gradually turn an amber gold color.

Bottle. Wash skin AM and PM.

Thanks, all! I will definitely try the suggestions.

I got my SWAMI in the mail on Thursday and spent last night working on it. Im a O+ gatherer. It is so exciting to see that a lot of my normally consumed foods are AVOIDS. No wonder!!

Lola, that was a great article! Definitely something for me to think about. I finished my SWAMI and have been eating what is recommended for the past 2 days, so hopefully the breakouts will clear up soon.

I couldn't believe when I went grocery shopping last night how many foods were on my avoid list that I normally buy! My issues are minor (Hashimoto's, PMS, some acne, 8 pounds I just cannot seem to lose, etc), but I am really starting to see how my diet has played a role in all that. Fascinating!

Norman Walker in his book, 'Colon Health, says acne/pimples is mucous coming through the skin as pus.  Some attention to your sewerage system (ie your colon) may be needed. I also had this problem at one time, esp as a teenager, due my high dairy intake and sugar/grain foods. I also did not have enough raw foods ie salads, raw juices, raw smoothies.
I would eliminate all dairy foods (not good for most people incl type O people, dairy produces pathogenic mucous which also makes it easier to get a cold/flu), this also takes the strain off your liver, the bowel/colon works better this way.  Refined sugars and grains also effect the liver, baked flour goods incl bread can dry the liver too and cause pains in shoulder/neck area. Try a 'green smoothie' for breakfast; ie half or one banana or a peach or fruit, some raw spinach/kale, add some ground flax seed, or a little acai berry powder, carob powder, raw cacao powder. Eat salad - add some soaked raw walnuts or pumpkin seeds, do some raw juicing.  It is helping me a lot.  Make sure your bowel moves easily in the morning (TCM says ideal time is between 5 and 7am which is colon time).  Walk as often as you can. Like babies, adults should have a bowel motion after a meal, easily.  If not, I would take steps to strengthen and tone up your intestine.  Eat some sea vegetables regularly too ie wakame, dulse flakes.  Do a self-massage of your body and abdomen.  If you eat a lot of animal proteins, make sure you eat some cultured/fermented vegetables every day too, once your internal environment is healthy, your acne will clear up naturally.

I always wondered why I had sore shoulder/neck muscles! I never knew that had something to do with my diet! Come to think of it, since I have been following my SWAMI, I haven't asked my husband for any neck rubs.

And as for the mucous thing...I haven't had a cold/flu/allergies in years, so I thought the dairy was always ok for me (prior to following SWAMI) because I never had any breakouts or mucous-related issues. I guess depriving myself of the dairy is what stirred up all the mucous, which resulted in the breakouts. I must have been detoxing because my skin is already clearing up. Far from healed and back to normal, but definitely clearing up.

I love these forums. I learn so much on here! Thanks everyone!

I also have that skin break out reaction to sweet foods, even some vegs!!   I just ate just 5 small slices of swede/rutabaga (in place of crackers) for lunch & had a breakout near my mouth?! Sooo freaking annoying, as I have to go out tonight!!
From what I can tell, it is a reaction to fructose, as that seems to be the common thing (an excess of fructose) whenever I react?! I so should have stopped at one slice, as I knew straight away they were sweet

Possum, that sounds like my skin too! UGH! The strange thing was that on my SAD I had no breakouts, but once I started my SWAMI, I broke out. That still puzzles me. I am going to start paying attention to the fructose intake because that might explain it. I have eaten way more fruit to make up for the lack of junk I normally ate and that may be why I broke out.

alpinearies - I found out from further research, that rutabagas/swedes/turnips are related to the latex family... & since I'd had a small gyno procedure performed the day before, it may have doubled my exposure, plus the fructose thing anyway?!

Plus I am so super-sensitive to sulfites/phenols etc, which can be airborne in the form of perfumes/colognes, air fresheners etc & that definitely makes my skin break out too

So the whole combo effect for me would have been compounded by the day out to the outpatient's appointment, having someone staying here who uses cologne & then the food etc...

GI rating of veg goes up when it is cooked; am now juicing my radish, turnip, pumpkin, carrot, swede(rutabaga), beet -  or putting in fresh vegetable salad. cooking foods changes the nutrients ie amino acids, fatty acids.
Weak/inefficient pancreatic function can also be part of the problem, with processing sugars in different foods; so again, fresh raw juice, fresh raw green smoothie, raw salad.  I add some grated sweet potato to salad too along with radish, onion.
Round balancing veg good for pancreas ie radish, onion, swede, pumpkin, cauli (check if you like if it is good for your 'type'.
I also for many years was snacking, eating too much later in the day, etc - my habits gradually weakened pancreas, and weak link in chain can weaken other organs ie kidneys, intestines, liver.  Am gradually making some changes. sometimes, to eat less takes off load of pancreas.  Pomagranate, fresh herbs good for pancreas.

Hi alpinearies,

I just responded to the ALCAT post- I have followed my SWAMI for a year- all is fantastic except my cystic acne. I'll let you know if any food sensitivities are revealed.

This is what I know makes my acne flare up:
1. Dairy and sugar. Even fruit. But that's me (for example, my husband and I both had our blood tested at a health fair- his breakfast was a donut & coffee with sugar. Mine was rice and beans. MY GLUCOSE LEVEL WAS STILL HIGHER THAN HIS. So I just can't take any form of sugar.)
2. I suspect soy. It just makes me feel horrible.
3. I also suspect peanuts. I love them and they are a diamond for me. But after eating raw peanuts for a few days I got painful cysts on my face (I later read it could be either a reaction to a particular mold in the nut or the androgen response to the peanuts).

It's probably your thyroid.  Start taking your morning temperature.  If it's under 98, you are hypothyroid.
