What are the implications of being a light secretor? It was suggested to me last year by a ifHI member. Where I live, I cannot get the lewis/phenotyping for blood. I would like to know Dr. D'Adamo's research about this topic.

Surely there must be an explanation for this.

I'm guessing that they were saying that you weren't secreting your type heavily into your saliva, mucous, etc? Not sure how they would infer that? Could just be a theory based on information. I think I remember hearing that sometimes it could get weaker with chronic illness, but I am not sure....

Non Secrectors produce little to no Blood Type in their bodily fluids.

Thanks for the replies.

Lola - Thanks a bunch for the link. From what I understand, I can get my Lewis typing info from 23 and Me.

hello dianne,

my lewis test came back as this:
Lewis a , Lewis b WEAK +
(Lea-)  (Leb+)

i believe that it is even less common than Lewis Double Negative, probably why you didn't get many responses yet, i hadn't ever come accross anyone else talking about it here, so thanks !

i understand that LDN correlates with diabetes, both types, insulin resistance, syndrome x. a weak, or slight secretor may well also experience some degree of this ?
i do.

i am now grain free, dairy free, and recently fruit free, but it is worth it because i feel so so much better.
i don't do at all well with any type of sugars. a little raw honey on occasion seems to be ok.

i use my swami as a guide and just go big on all the vegetables and fish, nuts and seeds that are beneficial for me.

the Lewis result really helped me to realise that my experiences had a genuine biological explaination, once i knew i had this unusual genetic tweak i stopped comparing the way i ate to the way most other people do, and gave myself permission to do something different.

is there a particular reason that 'light secretor' was suggested it might apply to you ?

i think you should do the test if you can, i'd love someone else to talk to
... anyone else out there ?

I found that when I went fruit free, my immunity dropped and I was getting sick more often. I take supplements so the only thing I can hypothisize is that there are enzymes and other factors in fruit that enhance immunity, created by the trees so that mammels would eat it and spread their seeds. Just because plants can't talk doesn't mean they don't evolve.
I usually do well on 1-2 servings of fruit.  My mother was a fruit addict. She loved fruit. Unfortunately too much fruit can raise the triglycerides which she had a high level.

So I'm just saying I know you say you feel better. I feel better off gluten but just watch your immunity..if it drops...it's because of lack of fruit in the diet.

So, in other words, a "light secretor" is a non-secretor?

I would say more  'non-secretor-like'
My saliva test reported that I am technically a secretor.
So like a non sec but without any fun benefits... like say bananas .

Should also say that my response is contingent on Dianne's question of 'slight secretor' being the same thing as my 'weak' Lewis b outcome.... it may be a different thing altogether.

Kathryn - I don't know when I will be able to do the 23 and Me testing. Here is a bit of history about myself and GTD.  So sure was I that I would type as a non-secretor that rather than choosing to follow my SWAMI as a secretor, as is recommended until one finds out what their saliva secretor status is, I chose to follow SWAMI as a non-secretor so as to not have another adjustment.

Anyhow, I typed as a secretor and even re-did it last summer as I thought that perhaps the lab had mixed mine with my husband's. He turned out to be the non-secretor and if you compared our health histories, you would definitely think he is the secretor. Second time around I typed as a secretor. When I followed the non-secretor suggestions, I felt really good, much better than the secretor and when I mentioned this to someone, they suggested that I may be a slight secretor and that is why I did so well following the non-secretor diet. I go back and forth in my mind about trying out the non-secretor version of my SWAMI.

I sure have been doing a lot of healing and am due to soon redo my fingerprints as I re-did them 7 months or so after the following GTD and they had improved immensely. In the past, my fingertips felt as smooth as silk when I rubbed them together, and now I can feel that this is changing.

Hello Dianne, i think you are doing exactly the right thing by following your instinct.

sounds like you could easily be a Lewis Double Negative - which can be either secretor or non-secretor, but always 'acts' like non-secretor.
i too dis-believed my saliva test result.

i think if you research 'Lewis double negative' you may find a bit more to read than searching the term 'light secretor'

i would do horribly if i followed my swami without question - i just take the bits that i know work well for me, and they do work REALLY well.

best wishes

Dianne, I may be wrong, but I do not remember my 23andMe results showing my secretor status.  C Sharp should be able to answer this for you.  Maybe you could send him a PM.  Have you asked your doctor to do the Lewis testing?  Most hospitals and the American Red Cross can do the testing, assuming you live in the US.  BTW, my saliva testing was confirmed by my blood testing through the Red Cross - non-secretor.

We are all individuals and you should follow the diet that seems to suit you best.  If your saliva testing shows you as a secretor but you feel better on the non-secretor diet, then I see no harm in that.  The non-secretor diet is certainly more restricted in terms of grains and dairy, so maybe your system and your particular genetic makeup call for cutting those things out.  Follow your instincts and you should be ok!

In 23 & Me, I use the value for FUT2  ( Marker is: rs601338 ) to determine secretor status.

From their site:

Quoted Text
The FUT2 gene encodes an enzyme that modifies certain cell surface molecules so they can be expressed on cells or released into bodily fluids. If neither copy of the FUT2 gene is functional, a person will not produce these molecules on their digestive tract cells or in their bodily secretions –hence the term “non-secretor”.

In addition to conferring norovirus resistance, being a non-secretor has also been associated with resistance to other infections. Non-secretors may be less susceptible to HIV infection. But they may be at higher risk for infection with several types of bacteria, including strains of E. coli that cause urinary tract infections and viruses such as the flu.

Although a non-secretor woman will be resistant to norovirus, her child may pay the price if he or she is a not a norovirus resistant non-secretor (thanks to the father's genetic contribution). Research has shown that certain molecules in breast milk, which are not present in non-secretor women, may protect breast-fed infants from norovirus by binding virus particles before they can infect the baby’s cells and cause symptoms.

Interesting about the breastmilk and norovirus. It sounds like there may have been a strong evolutionary benefit to wet nursing. If women routinely shared child-care and nursed one another's babies, the secretor babies of nonnie mothers would get some norovirus antibodies from "auntie milk."

How interesting.  When I last gave blood, I asked about Lewis testing and they couldn't do it.

Found this information while searching as this topic still greatly interests me. Not able to get Lewis Blood Typing where I live. Could get it done through a hospital only if I needed a transplant!!!
