I took a secretor saliva test 5 years ago and (from what I remember) I was a secretor. Went off the BTD for several years and now Im back. This time around I am finding that some secretor foods really bother my stomach. Does secretor status ever change? What damage would I be doing if I continue to eat secretor compliant foods when I am a non-secretor?

Secretor status is a reflection of the FUT2 gene:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FUT2

The gene would not change but I might guess it is possible the gene expression could vary a little in how strongly it expresses.

Most likely something else is going on. If you were a secretor a few years ago you are a secretor now.

You might want to take a look at the Genotype Diet (aka "Change Your Genetic Destiny" and abbreviated GTD on this site) or invest in a personalized SWAMI. There are other reasons besides secretor status that some foods don't agree with you.

Thanks guys! My SWAMI is in the mail as I type, so I'll just wait for that so I can personalize my diet a little better. Im curious to see if some of the things that are causing trouble for me now are on my avoid list on the SWAMI.

While your genes are not  likely to change, there is some possibility that an error in in processing the first test. (Sent results for a different person, reagents used in the test were mismeasured, ...).

If something does not feel right, retesting of the secretor status could be done.

This problem does not occur often, so it is not a high probability.

A new testing kit is available:

I also recently confirmed my nonsecretor status when I had genetic testing done for other things (haplogroups for SWAMI). I had previously used Lewis testing of blood to determine secretor status. Same results both ways.

I'm of the opinion (without facts, I hasten to add ) that we should all be retested for secretor status after a five year period on the blood type or geno type diet.

I have only heard of a few people having results that seemed to change, but after a period of five year I think the body will be getting to be back at a good level and will correct any wrong result/

like I said just a throw away theory.

alternatively in the mean time you can refine your diet to eating only food that are fine foe both secretor and non secretor for a short while see how it fits and what clears up and what doesn't seem to be working.

have you looked in to getting swami by the way it make everything a lot easier, really!

My swami is in the mail and is supposed to be delivered on February 8th, so I am going to wait for that and see what it says. If the issues with certain foods persist, I will retest my secretor status. Thanks everyone!

Thanks policychecker! I'm so excited for it to come in the mail already!

Aside from that...I decided to re-order the secretor test, but I probably won't be able to do it until next month. When I do the SWAMI, is there a way to choose "I don't know" on my secretor status until I can re-test?

Yes, it can be left as unknown, it is not time locked so you can change it to check out the differences between secretor & nonnie in the meantime & avoid those foods which come up in either.
