Hi -

This is crazy........I never would have guessed there was a "side effect" from maca helping to balance my hypothalamus and further prevent hormonally-based bulimia from reoccuring within me? But there HAS BEEN. And it's resulted in in creased mennorhagia. I'm so shocked. Without having been seen by the GYN yet, I wonder if I simply have hyperplasia of the uterus (my mother had it around the same age), because I can't imagine fibroids reacting in this way to Maca? Well, it's either intramural fibroids now acting up, or hyperplasia.....and the mense was absolutely PAIN FREE but GORY............

Your comments are appreciated.

Whoops....forgot to mention that while at work....I grabbed a can of Arizona "diet" green tea which contained splenda (had to choose that over aspartame to save my brain)....wonder if the splenda upset the uterus, hypothalamus! (it had to have upset something)

Take 50,000 IU of Vit A immediately and for as many days as you are bleeding heavily.  My doctor told me about this and my heavy bleeding stopped.  Keep up with at least 20,000 IU when not menstruating and the heavy bleeding should stop.

If you are in peri-menopause, you might be experiencing a startling decrease in Progesterone.  You might want to get estrogen and progesterone levels checked.

Thank you Jean....I read a couple of your older posts using the "search" box, but was not sure what to apply. I will do that next month; clinics are jammed with people at the end of the year but I will get a blood draw soon.

oops- nope can't be coz Macca is merely a super bene for O's but not for A's... nor others...
and then also I'm asking myselve....sorry dearest jeanb... such amounts of  A-vits-recommendations only can't create nothing but intox reactions...but ok it depends how long you're going to use this stuff.. but I'd be more then careful...

I think for being an A explorer....better to come along with Dong Qai ,,

and btw... we, the explorers are known to have in perimenopausal times heavier bleedings... so what ....

It may have been some kind of "detox reaction" if you detoxed extra junk through your uterus this month. If that's the case, your menses should only be extra-heavy that first month; after that, things should normalize. OTOH, if the maca is un-balancing you, then the problem would continue.

Everything's a delicate balance. Keeping the bulimia under control is of vital importance. Certainly, if there's another herb that's better for your blood type that has the same medicinal effect, that would be the best route to take. But if there are no other herbs, or not available to you at a price you can afford, then you may want to adjust the dose of maca and/or combine it with other supplements, such as the vitamin A suggested above.

Likely too much maca....

From LIvestrong

HORMONAL ISSUES
"Maca encourages the ovaries to produce needed hormones, stimulating ovulation. According to Peruvian expert Dr. Gloria Chacon, the alkaloids, not necessarily the plant hormones, are what produce the fertility effects of this hearty root. Cramping is a possible side effect with the wrong dose of maca, especially right before menstruation. Maca can also speed up the menstrual cycle if taken for long periods of time. "
