I bought the 10 lb brown rice,Colusa Rose, from Costco last month. Then I got to thinking, GMO? So I wrote them. This is the reply I got: Dear Aan:
We at Riviana greatly appreciate your interest in our products and are pleased to respond to your request.
Genetic Engineering (GE) is a method used to introduce new traits into plants. Trace amounts of genetically engineered (GE) rice were found in 2 commercially available samples of long grain rice. The Secretary of Agriculture stated that this poses NO human health, food safety or environmental issues. No recall of rice products is justified and no regulatory action is planned by the FDA. Riviana Foods purchases rice from a number of sources and therefore cannot guarantee that any Riviana product does not contain GE rice.
Once again, on behalf of us at Riviana, we thank you for contacting us. If you have any further questions or comments, please call me at (800) 226-9522 during our working hours of 9:00-4:00 Central Time.
So what do you think? Should I return it? I'm thinking so. See how they make it to be such a small deal......
Listen, this is what I think: I think we can't go around measuring our goodness by what we don't do, by what we deny ourselves, what we resist, and who we exclude. I think we've got to measure goodness by what we embrace, what we create, and who we include. Pere Henri (Chocolat)

I wouldn't presume to tell you whether to take it back or not.
These companies are pointing to the FDA, which has taken a "No Comment" type role in the matter. The Federal government has and is continuing to fail in this matter, although we were told 4 years ago that something would be done.
The FDA "supposedly" told the GMO (or GE) companies that any damage is their responsibility. The only questions I have is, "How do we hold them accountable for destroying the natural viability of the entire "seed" population? What process would they ever use to be able to "recover" all of the damaged seed and repopulate the world wild plant and animal populations with non-GMO affected plants and animals?

Urgh- now rice too?
Here's what I would personally do:
If the package was still un-opened, I'd return it for a refund. If the package was already opened, I'd go ahead and use it up. It's not like it's guaranteed to contain GMOs, and I'm not sure it's any actual risk to health. Returning/not buying "potential GMO foods" is as much about the political/economic statement (I won't buy your Frankenfood!) as it is about the health of each individual food item. If it's too late to "not give them your money" I wouldn't waste the food.

Hi Aan, I lived near Yucaipa, in Riverside. You CAN return opened foods or opened anythings to Costco. I have and they were happy to return my money if I had the receipt. Without the receipt, they gave me a Costco gift card.
yeah...I just opened it and thought of calling the company. It took them a day or two but they did reply. 10lbs of brown rice will prob take me most the year to eat so I'm pretty sure I'll be taking it back...

Hi Aan! You are the closest, geographically, to me of the BTD people! It seems everyone in SoCal is near LA, OC or San Diego! So...you understand when I talk about going " up and down the hill!!!" Did you know that this spring Cal trans will begin widening/re-routing the 15 and 215 at Devore? It will be a 3 year project! Now, can you imagine the Friday night and Sunday "Las Vegas and Colorado river" traffic???!! My son worked at the Victorville costco years ago and they always took anything back! Also, remember, regarding GMO food...to vote YES on 37!!!

Was it Riverside you lived? It's been so long since I've been on here. I haven't quite got on Warrior/+A diet but am doing better. Still on wheat but have gone back on vegetarian. I have lost 75lbs though but still having a problem with asthma. When we go to Vegas we usually do the mid-week cheaper rates and can't wait till we go again. Thanks for the heads-up! I thought we were going to get a bullet train to Vegas. Maybe after the economy gets better again...
