Just got my hubbie's Swami in the mail today, helping him edit his profile. He is from England. I don't know if England is Western, Southern, Northern, or Central European for his ethnic background? Both his parents were born and raised in England.

Anybody know?

I would choose either Western or Northern...  Maybe run it both ways and see what differences there are...

I would say western together with Ireland
Northern is Denmark, Sweden, Norway, iceland - maybe the upperparts of Germany and Holland.

I have seen it listed as both North and Western.  I'm from
England and also interested in other views.  I think there has been other posts and advice to run your Swami with each and see if there is much difference.

I have myself down as western, but i suppose it could be northern, it's certainly not eastern though. since during the ice age my ancestors over wintered in Spain.( according to my dna profile)

The Spanish came over way later, and that was mostly Ireland. Anglo Saxon pre dates Spaniards.

I may have similar roots to you.  My grandparents 3 out of 4 are Irish background, one Welsh/English. My father's family all looked rather Spanish.  
Mother's side blue eyes.  Would be curious to one day search the background as you have.

With England though it is not quite that simple due to previous invasions by the Romans, Danes and Normans (Dutch). If your family comes from the east or south of the country there is a good chance that your ancestry is at least partially Nordic even if seems on the surface to be English.

My maternal grandmothers family came to Canada from the east of Scotland but the original family name (before it was Anglicized) looks Danish/Norse to me. Similar situation with my maternal grandfather's family, originally from Germany via Ireland but the original German names were Anglicized at some point. Ludwig to Lodwick, Kronenburg to Cronsberry, Shier to Shae etc.

I have read that if you are looking for racial purity Europe is not the place to look. For England at this point I would have to go with ABJoe's suggestion of trying both north and west and see what happens. Thing is that geographig and origins are often two different things. Look at North America where the entire population is from 'other'.

I did some research on this for my Swami a while ago.  I was born and raised in Australia but my father is Scottish and my mother was Irish/German. Anyway, the UK is considered Northern Europe apparently. I don't think North vs West made that much difference for me  

My family came from the scottish lowlands over 200 years ago. The name is a registered scottish clan but doesn't have Mc in it. Instead it sounds like an anglicized danish name.

That was because we sent all the gaelic tribes up i the highlands  

Well maybe it is because I am European - but I would never really concider UK as Northern  

Henriette, I tend to agree. To be fair the research I've done is mixed and torn between Northern and North-Western. Northern seemed to dominate though so this is what I've put in my Swami. I would have said Western myself. I'll be curious to see what comes up in this post.

They need to have a mutt option - I am 1/4 Lithuanian, then a mix of Irish, Scottish, English, German, Spanish, French, French Candaian, Native American, and Turkish.  At least that is all we have found so far in the family tree. I just left that spot blank.

I searched up a list of official Scottish clans and not only is it very long but most of the names do not have the Mac prefix.

I would imagine that a lot of the names are Anglicized versions of earlier Danish/Norse names although a few of them,to my eye,look like they may be originals.

Interesting. My family are Clan Gunn, but we can also wear Royal Stewart or Hamilton tartans. There are definitely Macs in the clans, but you need to look at family names within each clan to find them.

With mostly French on both sides then a mix of Scottish, Irish, English, Jewish, Italian and Native American, I tried Western or Southern Europe on swami with very little difference. Southern favored the explorer(39%) and western favored the (41%)teacher.
I lean slightly more toward teacher so western Europe is currently on my swami.
