cranberries are a superfood for me, but I've never been able to find dried cranberries in health food stores without sugar added. Does anybody know of a source where I can buy dried cranberries without the added sugar?
Has anyone used their dehydrator to make dried cranberries with a compliant sweetener? |

Eden organic are sweetened with apple juice concentrate I think - but they also contain sunflower oil - must be a small amount though. We can not buy fresh or frozen here - so I buy those ones and sometimes soak in hot water to remove oils... http://www.edenfoods.com |

I find apple-juice sweetened dried cranberries with safflower oil at my local hfs. Some day, I'll dehydrate my own cranberries... |

These have sunflower oil, also.
Sunflower oil is listed on my SWAMI as beneficial Of course I realize it won't be the same for everyone. |

Lucky, you. It's a black dot on mine, as is safflower oil. |

I'd love to find truly unsweetened dried cranberries- but to the best of my knowledge, those do not exist. I would use them with pineapple juice to make cranberry sauce, like I do with fresh cranberries in season. But now that I have an extra freezer, I plan to buy extra cranberries when they're available to enjoy all year round.
I have seen the ones sweetened with apple juice, but that's still an "avoid" for me. I'd love to find them sweetened with pear or pineapple juice, or fully unsweetened, but that doesn't seem to exist.
My own attempts at making dried fruit weren't very successful. |

But in general one can buy unsweetened dried cranberries if you are willing to pay a price premium to leave of the sugar.
Thanks for those links, though! |

Thanks for the links C_Sharp! I didn't even know this product existed!

Ruthie: What is your recipe? I haven't been able to eat cranberry sauce for years as I cannot eat sugar. I assume you boil the juice & add the berries & cook as with sugar. How much pineapple juice do you use? -- or do you use frozen concentrate?
This would be great to be able to have cranberries again, even if they taste a little different!! |

I substitute pineapple juice for the water and sugar called for in the recipe. In the past, I used to use 1 can of apple juice concentrate (12 oz, undiluted) with a package of cranberries instead of the 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar called for on the package. I used to get SO much juice from WIC that I had to find recipes to use it up.
I can't have apples anymore, but I can have pineapple. I tried using 12oz of pineapple juice in place of the apple juice concentrate, and it worked fine- maybe less sweet than people are used to but sweet enough for me- DD2 often adds agave to her portion at the table. I haven't tried it with pineapple juice concentrate as I have yet to find one without added vitamin C (which is usually corn-based.) |

Take cranberries and string them on a string with needle and thread like a Christmas tree garland if you don't have a dehydrator. Hang them up to dry out in the warmest area of the kitchen during winter.
Ocean Spray has fruit sweetened cranberries: pom, cherry and orange, I think. No oil. |
