I was  asking questions about this back in May 2012 on another thread, but had not made an important connection until today when I was doing my occasional check of all my Avoids to see if anything unwanted has crept into my diet. I find that a particular fruit, plantain, has always been on my avoid list, but because I am unfamiliar with it I had taken little interest. However, I now discover that psyllium is made from plantain: I will give you the dictionary definition of psyllium:" a plantain whose flealike seeds are used as a laxative".  So in a nutshell, or bananaskin if you like, psyllium is an absolute no no for me as an A type, swamied Warrior. Bingo.

Still, psyllium is a rather hard/sharp fiber which is thought to be able to damage the intestinal wall. In that sense softer fibers like rice bran or oat bran are better choices.

In my opinion supplementing fiber is a bit overrated.

Yes the average American likely benefits from supplementing fiber, but we are far from the average American. All of us health conscious people likely do ingest more than enough of it via our diet.

I don't know what your stools are like, but if they're hard that would be a decent sign to maybe cut back on the psyllium

Fiber of this sort is not good for anyone. Perhaps you should read the book "fibre menace"

regular fruit and veg is sufficient for fibre needs normally.

I'd rather stick with fiber that is from the food I eat.  My favorite for my own type is ground chia seeds and ground golden flaxseeds.  Delicious in my morning smoothie, adds protein, Omega 3 fatty acids and thick creaminess to the blender drink.

I was on a site on the web. a lady using Psyllium instead of Xanthan, Carrageenan, and other gums for the making of gluten free bread. What do you think? Is it better than these other binders for our cooking? The interest started because My AB husband, was having big hard stools, hard to pass. So if it is from (banana family)it would be an avoid for him, so I guess it is Oatmeal for him. Is mineral Oil at bedtime okay for him, I bought some stool softeners, but hate to use them because they have Propylene Glycol in them, any ideas? We eat fiber in fruits and veggies everyday and some flax bread I make. Thanks

I use it in a bread I make.  Only 4 tbl for the entire loaf.  My bowel movements have never been better.  I eat one piece a day.  I also take 1 tbl of Dr. D's Fiber supp.  But my bowel moments really improved when I started eating this bread.

I'm an AB and I thought I'd throw something out for you.  Long Grain Brown rices seems to be like a bit of a laxative for me.  FWIW.  When I eat it it helps things along and I have always taken note by that.  I eat oatmeal regularly too though.  And it probably acts the same way.  But I seem to notice it a bit more with long grain brown rice.  

As far as psyllium being baaaaaad, I have no clue.  I have taken in the past when I was detoxing from candida real bad and it seemed to help.  And my sister had a bout of bowel toxicity and she was taking something called "challenge" and I think it has psyllium in it.  And it helped her a LOT.  So.....  

The longer I follow all this health stuff, especially on here, the more I hear that just about any food or supplement has a study that says it is "BAD".  Maybe there is some truth in it.  But one of the downsides to watching what we eat can be overcompensating and ending up with no choices.  I think someone was talking this last week in a thread.  If we really knew where any of our food was at one time or another, we wouldn't want to eat anything.

Anyways....  I'm not saying there isn't any wisdom in understanding the yucky foods out there, but call me skeptical about psyllium being not good for you.  Maybe it is bad for some of the blood types.  I actually get plantains on my list.  I think as a neutral.  I forget.  I used to eat them but they're kind of sugary.  When you let them get ripe enough to eat raw.  They're really good though.  But I did take note that Conor said psyllium is a completely different thing.  

Actually we stopped buying bananas and plantains because of those stupid little flies seem to infest the house.

I used to eat psyllium seeds quite often, now I find just fruit and vegetable fibres so much more effective and adequate as the are gentle fibres and also contain the fluid essential to keep insides(small intestine especially) moist and healthy.  Some people with grain/starch intolerance problems, may also know where I am coming from and can relate to me.  Am now eating fruits just in mornings, just one type of fresh fruit at a time and quite a bit of it... first time around 7:30am and more during the morning; it is working much better than any grain, seed, nut or other things I used to eat for breakfast. I now think the grains/undigested foods led to a problem with sugars from fresh fruits. I also know the fruit gives me lots of vitamin c, and other minerals, nutrients - plus it's fresh whole food!

addressing only the issue at hand.. I am taking a spoon of extra light olive oil between meals .. after 2 weeks no more problems.. wash down with water..


Being here is invaluable, but not enough. We need ALL the Doctors. I needed them for a very small cancer spot-I could never feel!!! Please do your mammograms! Doing so saved me from cancer later on. I am grateful! Thanks for learning from my experience! I was lucky! I wish the same for YOU!

Over 20 years ago, I heard about psyllium &  bought 2 large bottles of it(must have been on sale!).
Well, even a small amount gave me a scratchy throat, an allergic reaction, so I couldn't use it.

I bet it is something that is individual & that more research would show who can have it. I think it is the main ingredient in Metamucil which I have never had. But many people use it.
