Welcome robbinlee217! One thing you are going to learn here is that you rate foods by their individual ingredients, so check out the TYPEbase, where the most up-to-date information can be found. |

Please read the label when you buy Orzo. It seems like Orzo is made with semolina wheat which type A, Non Secretors should avoid. But if you are Type A, Secretor. It is Neutral. I like the way it looks too but when I read the label from the health food store it said it was made from Semolina wheat. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-orzo.htmhttp://www.dadamo.com/typebase4/depictor5.pl?523 |

Even though I am A+ secretor, I cannot eat anything with gluten, so if Orzo is made from wheat, I can't eat it due to my allergies. |

hi and welcome,
I tried one of the salads at Whole Foods with orzo and I really liked it. They usually add some greens chopped, and other beneficials. It seems to go with alot of foods.
It's a little crunchy and nutty tasting (at least to me) and I've also had it Greek style.
You can buy it in the bulk section of your HFS and add your own ingredients.
Hope you enjoy it (if you find that you can eat it) and let us know how you prepare it.

? Whole Foods' orzo salads are made with semolina -- It's pasta in the shape of melon seeds is all. |

I have put orzo in my chicken or turkey veggie soup for a little extra fillng and it doesn't bother me. I just try not to eat gluten as much as possible. As a kid, my Mom would make it with chicken broth and whip in an egg for a "soft" food when I was sick.( Like a little pastina soup. ) |

Cajun,
I'd say as an A orzo in chicken or vegetable soup sounds good. I'd actually rather have that than chicken soup with rice as sometimes is served.
Orzo, being a neutral for secretors, makes a great salad and gives the other vegetables in the salad substance, IMHO.
Purlgirl,
Being a nonnie A no orzo for you! But brown rice is nutritious and goes with alot of things.

Orzo is an avoid on my swami because of the semolina flour I make my own pasta with spelt flour or buy rice pasta. I wonder if I could make anything like orzo, I have a wonderful broccoli orzo soup recipe, orzo, carrots and broccoli cooked in broth, and when the pasta is done add an egg. So very simple and wonderful on a cool evening. |

GR,
That orzo/broccoli soup with carrots sounds delicious. Would the brown rice work in that?
Would you list the recipe. I'm really into soups lately especially for lunch. It's quick and easy.
I have a package of rice pasta. How do you prepare it (what do you add?)

Broccoli Orzo Soup:
4 cups chicken (or veggie) broth 1 medium carrot, pared and sliced thin 1/3 cup orzo or other tiny pasta 2 cups coarsely chopped fresh broccoli 2 eggs beaten 2 T freshly grated parmesan cheese salt and freshly ground black pepper (I leave out the pepper)
In a large saucepan heat the broth and carrot to boiling over high heat. Stir in the pasta. Cover and cook over low heat for 10 minutes. Stir in the broccoli; cover and cook over low heat 10 minutes, or until the pasta and broccoli are tender and the soup is thickened. Beat the eggs in a small bowl; heat the soup to boiling, add the eggs slowly in a steady stream, stirring constantly, until the egg cooks into threads. Add the cheese and season with salt and pepper. Makes about 5 cups.
I always double the recipe (and dont' double the eggs). |

GR,
Thanks for the recipe. I know that you are a busy lady but I need your input about two ingredients. I'm allergic to eggs and I can't eat cheese (the cheese is a real lose for me).
I'll do some research. But if you can think of any substitutes for these two ingredients I'd appreciate it greatly.

Just an aside: here in Europe the orzo I see in the stores is mostly made from barley, not semolina. So it's (as always) best to check the ingredient list |
