I just received an inexpensive far infrared sauna ordered from Amazon (here's a link to the product http://www.amazon.com/Infrared-Portable-Foldable-Sauna-Detox/dp/B002POAYDW/

My question is how to determine temperature and timing.  The instructions are very sincere, but clearly written by some from Asian countries who don't know English well and nothing in one page of instructions for setting the temp or about timeing (preheating unit and/or time spent in sauna).

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?  there are large heating panels on the back and on each side to provide the far infrared effect.

Let me know if you have any ideas or links.  I'm looking for online guidance, but not finding much.

Tom

a.k.a Chinglish. All that I can see you can do here is start off at at a low infrared/time setting and work your way up to a spot where you are comfortable. I assume you have been in a sauna before so you must have a good idea what you are looking for.

As to why there are no directions: possibly
a) They don't want to be bossy
b) Saves paper
c) They think you are a North American. You don't read the directions anyway so why annoy you by printing them.

Enjoy

Is yours the inexpensive portable model like mine?  Also, what does the dry skin brushing in advance do?  Stimulate lymph fluid?  And what is an example online of a brush appropriate for the skin?

I have been interested in this kind of device for year I would appreciate any comment from someone who enjoys their product.  My true love may be an old fashioned steam cabinet, but I will flirt with a FIR sauna if it realy does work.

Tom1964, I just bought the same unit as you but haven't used it yet...but try reading some of the
reviews on Amazon on this product as many people have given good tips.  I just read that someone
mentioned the temperature they're using.  Don't know how much you weigh but someone wrote
that their chair fell apart (the person weighed over 200 lbs) and to be careful before you sit down to drape a towel over the chair it as it gets very hot.  Also someone mentioned the zipper came apart.
Haven't read all the reviews but learned a lot from the few I've just read.  Hope to learn more too before I use mine.

I had read the reviews, but couldn't remember if they listed temps and time, I'll check again.  I took my maiden voyage last night.  Here are some reviews, but only after the first time.  It was very easy to unbox and zip up and that's about all it takes.  The chair held me ok ... until... I shifted my weight to lean against the back rest.  Then immediately the back seat bar bent in the middle til I stood up.  It would have collapsed had I not.  I knew the chair was an issue so I had tried it before I ever used the unit.  It would have held me fine had I not leaned back as I had sat on it for 5 or 10 minutes before I tried leaning my back against the back rest and just that slight shift did it.  I weight 266 (down from 300 last May).

I turned the unit on and let it heat up.  It is a slow heating up process so I would recommend to let it heat up first because you don't want to be sitting in that restricted space for over an hour.  I let it get to 100 degrees which took 20 - 30 minutes, but I forgot to time exactly.  I sat on a metal mesh trash can turned upside down from my home office. and covered it with a pad and towel making it the right height.  In the end, this shortened my session because I was getting numb just a bit down just below my waist because if sitting on a trash can turned upside down so I bailed but got in 30 minutes.  I got in when it hit 100, but opening it and the time to get in cooled it back down to high 80s.  After 30 minutes when I ended it was just about to hit 120.  Next time I'll let it heat up to 130 - 135 before getting in so I will pull it out and plug in when I get home.  There are defaults on the digital timer/heat setting wired remote control.  I think it defaults to 120 and to 60 minutes.  And I read a few things that talked about starting at 100, but I'm used to dry saunas so I went higher.  I plan to purchase a shower seat, maybe a bamboo one at a local retailer.  My back got a little sore from sitting upright with no support, but I think that's good for me to some degree.  Might also try a balance ball if it can take the heat, not sure about that though, I'm sure manufacturer of ball and sauna would not recommend, but good for posture.

I did sweat pretty well and would have really let loose if I could have gone longer and higher temp.  The heater plates sit pretty close to your body and are only on your right, left and back side so I'm considering turning for part of the time so I can get direct coverage on my front side.

I can say I felt very good afterward.  I'd say as good or better than any dry sauna session I've ever been to.  Also, I'd been to my first deep tissue massage ever last Saturday and was healed up from it except for some soreness in my gluteal muscles on both sides.  I could tell a marked improvement in the soreness after the sauna.  It wasn't uncomfortable at anytime with the exception of being a 266 lb man with over 30% body fat trying to sit upright fairly still on an upside down metal trash can, but as for the heat, it wasn't at all uncomfortable to me.

I was able to unzip it (no problems with zippers) and slide it carefully under the sofa this morning after I cleaned it and let it dry (it wasn't that wet or at all difficult).  Plan do use again tonight.  I can watch TV and because my pc is in my HDTV, I can be online if I want to, but prefer to keep arms in and zippers for arms closed.  I can operate my TIVO remote from inside and it showed no signs of stress or wear from heat.  Will try to keep it out of there though at higher temps.

I think the only concern I've heard raised has to do with cancer risks from the electricity going through the panels, probably similar to the concerns about electric blankets.  If I like this one enough I likely will go for a 2-person wooden unit at some point, but thought trying this for $189 ($209 with shipping) was worth it.

Feel free to ask me any questions, especially Chloe since we have the exact same unit.  If you haven't already, read the one page of instructions (4 pages, one piece of 11 x 17 paper folded in half).  The translation comes out so funny.  It's understandable, but just makes me giggle.

Mine is a sunlighten solo, looks sort of like an igloo. You lie down and your head can stay cool by not being inside, that is what i looked for as i prefer breathing fresh air. It was expensive but i plan to use it in my clinic when i finish my course so it needs to withstand a lot of use.
Yes, the dry brushing is good for lymph flow and circulation, I think it is working, my skin is softer too.  There are a few methods you can look up but usually you brush toward the heart.  The brush I use is made of coir  fibre but i have seen hessisan and cotton ones too, even a rough dry towel would do the trick.

What would you all see as the risks (outside of any obvious existing health condition)?

The new supplement that Dr. D just came out with seems to do a similar thing to the sauna. Trehalose you can see it on the home page for DPN.

I have wanted a far infared sauna for a L O N G time and this might do the trick.

In the GenoType book, Dr. recommends it for Gatherer's, to remove toxins from the tissues.  I believe he recommends to start slow, with 5 to 10 minute sessions.  Since I thought I was a gatherer for a long time, I wanted to try this but could never find a health clinic or local sauna that had one.

Dry skin brushing stimulates lymph flow and is ideally done with a 100% boar-bristle brush, but other types of brushes will work as well.

There are some good videos on YouTube and at least one with the $189 sauna I purchased which show regular people demonstrating or even unpacking their Sauna.  Two days, two saunas, about to get in for day three and I'm happy.  My skin always comes out so soft.

I ordered the same one today.
I hope the EMF's won't be excessive. I'm hoping to get rid of lead and mercury.

I have one and it is within the safe range for EMF's. The company claims it and we had it tested as well by a friend who does environmental testing.

Sorry, I just meant that I had an infrared sauna. The type I have is from a company called Far North Saunas, they are in Canada and ship to the U.S & Canada.
