I've had a lot of success with 5-HTP. It really calms me for a long time.

I know O's should avoid 5-HTP, but the anti-stress protocol says it's OK for non-secretors.

http://www.dadamo.com/protocols/5.html

Does this recommendation include O's?

Protocol #4 says the opposite of protocol #5:

Any other O's who love 5-HTP?

The 5-HTP I have here is Peak "X" free.

You may be getting a short term benefit but it won't help you in the long run.

I'm sure a senior member will come along to assist you further.

Griffonia lectin

Posted By: Peter D'Adamo

In Response To: Help me understand Griffonia (sTeve)

Griffonia lectin has moderate to mild reactivity with both A and B antigen, but more importantly, reacts with Lewis B antigen (a rare occurence). As I've mentioned, Lewis typing can be a 'quick and dirty' way to determine secretor status. Basically, we all start off making Lewis A (unless you are one of the .5% of the world that makes no Lewis antigen, a topic for another post) but secretors convert all their Lewis A antigen into Lewis B, so Non-secretors are Lewis A+ Lewis B- and secretors are Lewis A- Lewis B+.

This Griffonia is more of a problem in Type A and B Secretors, than in A or B Non-secretors.

Why is this important?

Most of the newer type tryptophane supplements ('5HT') are derived from Griffonia.

5-HTP is listed in the anti-stress protocol for non-secretors of all types, but not for any secretors.

There are several threads on this topic.   So you might google (upper right hand of page) it to see if there is the exact information your looking for.  I found that L-Theanine (not sure of the spelling it is in the Tranquility Base product sold here at this site) worked best for me in the short term. I haven't used anything lately.  I just eliminated a few people from my life. That seems to have un-depressed me. But many O's do seem to use 5HTP. Although if I remember correctly from the Live right book. (out on loan right now)  Further study showed that it hasn't been the BEST choice for us.

I used to take 5-HTP regularly. It helped me to wean off of Prozac years ago.

I stopped taking it when I started BTD because I read that Dr D didn't reccomend it. I didn't actually notice any problems with it, but I decided that my supplement money was better spent elsewhere because of what I read online.

In the past few months, I've been having some problems. My fibromyalgia symptoms (including insomnia) have been returning, plus my mood hasn't been very stable- I've found myself yelling at my kids a lot. Even finding out my secretor status (and adjusting my diet accordingly) hasn't helped.

I've recently re-started 5-HTP, and it's like I'm a new person. I'm much calmer, and I'm sleeping better. It's clear to me that I don't make enough serotonin on a regular basis (a hallmark of Fibromyalgia) and the 5-HTP helps to normalize that. I feel  better within half an hour of taking it, and the results last the rest of the day. It's now been about a month since I've restarted it, and overall I'm doing much better than I was before.

Maybe someday I'll heal enough so that my body  can create the seratonin it needs from the foods that I eat, but until then I plan to keep taking 5-HTP.

hmmm, 5htp is a precursor to GABA if I'm not mistaken, and I take GABA every night.....I got off Ambien (sleeping pill) that way and I continue to take it to sleep, but wonder if it is keeping me from making my own seratonin.....not to hijack the thread, but its so related.......

5-HTP gives your body the building blocks to make its own seratonin, while SSRIs (such as Prozac) stop your  body from breaking down seratonin, making seratonin levels rise over a few weeks, while 5-HTP can make seratonin levels rise within half an hour. Plus 5-HTP leaves plenty of seratonin available for breakdown into melatonin, while SSRIs keep the seratonin as seratonin, so you end up with  very little available melatonin (a side effect that takes effect before the seratonin levels rise significantly.)

I don't see how 5-HTP supplementation would interfere with your body's ability to make its own seratonin; it supports that process. GABA is a different neuro-transmitter. You can safely take 5-HTP along with GABA,  but you may or may not need both.

I strongly reccomend you read the book The Mood Cure by Julia Ross. It explains all these different amino acids and neurotransmitters much better than I can. Then double-check any supplements the book suggests against Dr D's protocols for your blood type.

Blood Type "O"

FOUND THIS ONLINE!

Blood Type 0 generally does well on a diet of meat and other high protein foods. They can eat most types of animal protein, but, like all blood types, they must prepare these protein-rich foods properly to be able to derive positive benefits from them. Overcooking protein denatures it and taxes the digestive system. Meat should be organic and eaten rare or slow cooked to obtain maximum benefits.
Large portions of non-starchy vegetables that are Neutral or Beneficial should also be consumed with protein foods.
Examples of Beneficial non-starchy vegetables for Blood Type 0 include beet greens, broccoli, romaine lettuce, okra and Swiss chard. Eating generous portions of these vegetables also helps maintain proper acid/alkaline balance.
Grains, especially corn and wheat, as well as dairy products, are major avoids for Blood Type 0.

Other Avoids include lentils, cashews, black olives and avocados.

Generally an energetic blood type, Blood Type 0 people tend to burn the candle at both ends, so NutriCalm and adaptagens like Siberian ginseng [Eleuthero] may be helpful for them. People with this blood type are also prone to depression, particularly manic/depressive disorders. Chinese Mood Elevator is a good antidepressant for them, but St. John's wort is not.
5-HTP Power may also be helpful with depression in Blood Type 0, but not where hyperactivity is present.
People with Blood Type 0 tend to do better with a mineral supplement than they do with a multiple vitamin, so Ionic Minerals or Chinese Mineral Chi Tonic are good choices for general good health.

Blood Type 0 people need protein and have a special need for the amino acid L-tyrosine.
L-tyrosine helps maintain levels of dopamine and epinephrine, two neurotransmitters involved in mood. The best sources of this amino acid are red meat and wheat. If Blood Type 0 people do not eat red meat, they may crave wheat, which is an Avoid for their type. SuperAlgae and Ultimate Green Zone can supply the amino acid tyrosine and keep protein levels stable in Blood Type 0.

ADD and ADHD are most prevalent in Blood Type 0.
Energ-V provides adaptagens that improve stress response and nourish the adrenals, which can be very helpful for ADD/ ADHD children. For older Blood Type 0 children and adults with this problem GABA Plus, Focus Attention may be helpful.
Because of their tendency to an overactive immune system, Blood Type 0 should generally avoid immune stimulants. Colostrum is an excellent balancer of the immune system in Blood Type 0. The overactive immune response also increases the tendency for allergies. HistaBlock can be helpful here. It reduces hyperactivity associated with food allergies, too.

High carbohydrate diets in this blood type can lead to hypothyroidism. Used in conjunction with dietary changes, TS II can help to bring the thyroid gland to balance.

I took it for about 10 days when I felt near normal again.. took it for another while and then only sporaticly once a wekk.. I would take it again.. the testoserone is a precurser to hormones so Ok for me to take..
