I recently started incorporating passion fruit in my diet because its a diamond on my SWAMI. Now I was wondering; are you supposed to chew on the seeds, or should the 'yellow squish plus seeds' be swallowed whole without chewing? The seeds are pretty hard and I figure that not chewing them totally prevents your body/guts from being able to extract the contents of the seeds. Now the big question is: is the yellow squish the reason passion fruit is a superfood on many SWAMIs? Or are it the seeds' contents? The taste and structure of the yellow squish is very different from the contents of the seeds, and because the seeds' contents don't taste very nice (but weirdly bitter), I fear that the yellow squish may actually be the beneficial stuff, while the seeds' contents could actually be an 'avoid'. (I normally would say that what your body doesn't crave but prefers to avoid cannot be very beneficial.) Of course the contrary could also be the case; that the seeds' contents are the beneficial stuff and that not chewing on them effectively turns your passion fruit in a neutral. I guess there is probably no-one who knows the answer here, accept maybe Dr. D himself.. Unless someone knows how foods were tested? Are they for instance first put in a blender and only then tested? If so, that would probably mean we are ought to chew on the seeds. Thanks in advance for any insights! |

I don't know the answer. I like the seeds except my teeth don't so much... In general I *think* - the seeds wouldn't be digested (at least not well) - it's good to eat the whole package (I also like the skin of organic watermelon when blended together with a little of pulp and if the seeds of apple are eaten without the apple, they would be more harmful because of arsenicum... with apple they can be eaten with moderation.) |

Thanks for your replies I'll definitely continue eating the seeds (would be real bothersome trying to separate the yellow stuff from the seeds!), the question is 'should you chew on them?' I guess you fellow passion fruit eaters must agree the taste of chewing those seeds is not exactly pleasant.. |

Childhood Christmas memories were always of being fascinated with the lip of my Grandfather's fruit salad bowl being lined with the passionfruit pips... |
