Have any of you discovered a good electric grinder to make almond flour? I've been googling all day, and stumbled across the Cuisinart Spice & Nut grinder. I plan to get that, but I have also read that grinding the nuts too long can make them turn into butter (especially if the motor gets warm).
I was wondering if any of you know of a specialized fool-proof gadget to make nut flour, or if you've tried the Cuisinart appliance above.
Thanks! |

I have one that looks exactly like this that was made by Zyliss. I bought it about 20 years ago and I love it. The tiny blades are perfect for making nut flour....it's slow to produce a lot of flour because it's small but nothing I've tried works better. http://www.cookware.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=QI1043It's not electric, though. |

I use my Vitamix to make almond flour. If I want almond butter I have to add oil to it. |

That's the type of device that's recommended in a Joy Of Cooking cookbook that I have. |

Thanks for all the feedback! I want an electric one so I can make a bunch of almond flour at once, so I don't think the Zyliss will work for me.
Cindy - are you able to mill a lot of almonds at once in your Vitamix? I also read that it's easy to have it go to almond butter when using something this powerful (?) |

I use the Vita-Mix to make almond butter. The book says that to make butter, you need to add oil because the almonds don't have adequate natural oil to make butter. It also states that processing for longer than (I think) 4 minutes will overheat the motor... When I have made almond butter, there are still some rather large chunks of nut, so these would probably need to be sorted out to have a smooth "flour". The Vita-Mix works best when a rather large quantity of nuts are in the bowl - for instance, I use 4 cups of nuts and 1 cup of oil when I make butter. |

Me too!! It grinds so quickly, they don't have time to heat up much either... |

I find that I get better flour with fewer almonds. I use less than a cup. I play around with the settings till I get what I want. It's noisy. |
