On the B BTD, lentils are not only an Avoid, they are a red flag avoid.  Yet, somehow, I now find they are a "Neutral" on my SWAMI" Explorer diet.

Who can satisfy my curiosity and tell me what it is about lentils that is good enough for an Explorer to counter the anti-B part of it?

My guess-- helps the liver? The weight was not enough to move it to your bene's. Maybe a tug of war between values?

I dogpiled "lentils help liver" and there were several things that came up. Just a guess though. For this A Explorer, they are a bene and I need to start incorporating them.

Some reasons lentils are good for people:

High in Iron and other minerals

High in B vitamins (B1, folate ...)

High in protein (High in amino acids isoleucine,  lysine ...)

High in fiber


Some things you could do to help digest them better:

Soak over night.

Cook fully.

I presume that one reason lentils rated low for Bs is they contain chemicals that inhibit digestion. Soaking and cooking will help to break these down.




Commercial for SWAMI:

Since it is not possible for me to weigh the positives factors from the GenoType diet and the negatives from the blood type diet in any particular case. I am happy that I have SWAMI to do that for me.

Some foods that rate highly in the explorer diet plan, do not rate so positively in SWAMIs for particular explorers.

So while lentils rate with for explorers in general, a specific explorer may have a lower rating in their SWAMI.  




I know the commercial is a poor excuse for not actually knowing what is going on thus not being able to directly answer your question.

See, the thing that puzzles me is that, AFAIK, lentils have a lectin that is bad for type Bs, agglutinating and very inflammatory.  For them to be upgraded, not just from Toxin to Dot, but to Neutral, means there is something in them that is strongly positive for Explorers to counteract that big negative for Bs.

I might just give them a try.  I've been hesitant to do so because of the old BTD value, and concern that it might cause back pain, but I won't know until I eat them!

Lentils are neutral for O nonnies, but they are a superfood on my SWAMI.  They are beneficial for my A DH, so we have them fairly often.  I like to make lentil patties and serve them with some kind of chutney or condiment.  I didn't realize lentls are superfoods for Explorers because of liver issues.  Good to know.

lentils are one of my favourite foods on earth. I like to saute some onion, add in some cumin and turmeric, a dashing of salt.. then the lentils and quite a lot of water. Goes brilliantly with cauliflour and rice. One of my favourite meals on earth, and dirt cheap  

i heard they protect against fatty liver and are easy to digest by those with liver problems -
'lentils contain healthy fatty acids and arginine, a nutrient that facilitates detoxification of the liver'

Lentils are also high in molybdenum

Thanks for the reminder re soaking them C_s & the thoughts on sprouting Lola - I guess soaking is after all, the first step in sprouting

From an Avoid for B's, lentils are upgraded to "black dot" status for Nomads. I eat lentils now about twice a year, maybe. No problems there.

Just be careful not to buy white lentils a.k.a urad dals as they are in fact split black mung beans or small yellow ones a.k.a channa dals as they are made of some small chick pea or something. Toor dal is made of pidgeon peas by splitting and small yellow ones can also be split mung beans.

O in Va, if I understand correctly, the blood circulating between the digestive system and the liver is kept separate from the blood circulating through the rest of the body until it's filtered by the liver.  That contains anything harmful from the food we eat from getting into general circulation.

Endotoxins are toxins produced by bacteria, presumably coming from bad bacteria in the gut.  The article is saying that if endotoxin gets into the liver, the whole filtering process ("hepatic clearance") can be interrupted, allowing bad stuff from the food we eat to bypass the liver's filtering process and get into circulation.  That can be very inflammatory.

I'm guessing that the "Explorer weakness" the Dr. referred to was that we are even more vulnerable than usual to having our hepatic clearance disrupted by endotoxins (and maybe by other kinds of toxins, too).

That's as far as I can go.  I still don't understand how lentils help out this problem, since they aren't mentioned in the article!  I don't know much about lentils, since they were off-limits on BTD.  Perhaps there is some bit of "obvious" information out there that I'm missing, that would be the linchpin for understanding.

Coming back to say that was a great read, Lola.  It strengthens my resolve to eat well, which I pretty much do, but to eat even BETTER than I do, to see food from a different perspective than the purely sybaritic/gastronomic/emotional one that I'm habituated to, and to drastically reduce my red wine consumption.    I will ask my doctor at my next check up about a test to determine my liver/gallbladder detox functions.  It would be good to know.  Thanks again.
