Hi, All!

I have just found out that I am a Gatherer, which, after reading it, was a HUGE "Ah-Hah!" moment.

I have been eating, at some level of compliancy, the O-Type diet for the past 10 years or so.  I have ordered SWAMI and I'm sure that it will help sort things out.  In the meantime, I need to wrap my O-brain around incorporating the Gatherer GTD into my world, because it makes so much more sense.

Any suggestions from those who have been there?

FATS!  I foresee the biggest struggle with fats.  As an O within the BTD, I have relied on plentiful intake of good fats (compliant nuts, oils and ghee) to satiate me and to keep my sugar cravings at bay.  However, I now understand that my very stingy metabolism loves to store those fats away.  Maybe it won't be a problem, but does anyone have any suggestions?

My Gatherer daughter tells me that it's the carbohydrates that can derail her health and weight, not so much the fats.  Although that's not to say that she goes way overboard on fats.

Same here. I use a oil sprayer for most cooking.  I use ghee (2ts) for my morning egg, and veggies. The moister from them keep the eggs from sticking and I use low heat. I don't fry otherwise. Most other fats are used in baking and since I need to stay clear of them. Well it's a self eliminating problem.

I've always counted ghee as fat. It is listed in the book as dairy. Like to know how others value it.

I think of it as a fat, too, though SWAMI lists it as dairy.

Sweetum, I just sent you two PMs in response to a PM from you, and only now, afterward, do I see this thread.  I might have posted here instead, had I seen it first, but eeeenyhooo, long story short:  read the PMs 'cause I don't think, based on your measurements (torso shorter than legs, upper leg shorter than lower leg), that you could be a Gatherer.

Lots and lots of diamond vegetables, steamed.  I've found that's the key for me.

Sometimes three cups of veggies.  I know that if I eat grain, any kind of grain, for me, it just sets up a craving cycle. I'm not celiac, but I've found for me, I have difficulty eating the recommended servings of diamond/super food grains.  So, it's easier to eliminate and up the veggies for my fiber.

The veggies we eat the most of?

Onions, red bell peppers, zuchinni, sweet anise (fennel bulb), fresh water chestnuts.


Knowledge is power.  SWAMI gives you the diet that will unlock the key to better health, and it's all based on your unique individuality.

I agree.  R, if you are a Gatherer (and, again, read my PMs...it isn't adding up to me, with your leg-torso ratios, but I could be wrong, of course), the fats aren't what make us fat.  In fact, the good fats are REALLY good for us, keeping our brain chemistry happy, cravings away, nerves, skin, eyes, ETC. all full of vim and verve.  It's the starchy (particularly grainy) carbs on our avoid list that we have to watch out for.  I should add that protein is KEY at keeping cravings away and brain chemistry happy in the Gatherer, too.

Great ones, kk!  Onions have become a major staple of mine, too!  I ALWAYS keep a BAG of 'em in the fridge and, when I get down to two or three, I panic and rush immediately to the HFS...okay, so I don't panic, nor do I rush, that was writer's embellishment there, but I DO make sure to buy onions ASAP.  Tonight, I am having onions (2) and sweet potato (1, very small one), stir-fried in olive oil and a TON of curry powder (because, in this dish, it ends up making the salmon taste like my beloved steamed Maryland blue crab with Old Bay Seasoning--yay!), garlic granules and adobo seasoning, then added to some canned wild Alaskan salmon, organic mayo (I know--there I go again with the mayo), lime juice, sea salt and fresh basil, all mixed together.  Oh YEAH, babe!

You will note that the onion is front and center in this scenario.  Need it, want it, gotta have it!

kk, does whole, brown basmati rice spike your blood sugar like other grains?  I find that I can have it once per day and it actually satisfies my need for a little "comfort carb" meal in there.  I do try, of late, to streeeeeeeetch it out with using MORE veggies and LESS rice, for example, I often stir-fry it (and I will have already boiled it with onion, and often carrots and peas, so it already has some veg in it) with some broccoli slaw (julienned broccoli and carrot), which is available in bags at my HFS, and it comes out similar to how bamboo shoots are in taste and texture in Chinese stir-fries.  The texture of the stir-fried broccoli slaw with the rice is very wonderful indeed.  A good sauce/cooking oil mixture for this is dark-toasted sesame oil, dark raw agave nectar...and then (off heat) lemon or lime juice.

Oh YEAH, babe!  Gettin' hungry over here!

I would suggest waiting until you get SWAMI before making changes.

The SWAMI diets are often quite different from those in the book.

It it were my choice, I would not spend my time learning new lists, new rules about dietary composition (fats ...), and new approaches to cooking if I knew I was going to have to unlearn all of that in two weeks when I got new lists, new rules on dietary composition, ...

My dear friend is BT O+ and we are trying to genotype her. We are stuck between gatherer and explorer. She is petite and needs to lose a little weight. Her hands are not padded, ring fingers longer than index, torso longer than legs. Her parents (both Italian) and brothers, her husband and both children are all BT O!
There was heart disease and cancer on both sides of her family but a few lived to be 100 on her Dad's side. (All of the BT O's above are medium to short in height.)

Any suggestions to her on weight loss? She tries everything! She has been tiny and slim her whole life( I've known her since we were 14) and didn't gain much until her children were older. We are the same age.

Once she determines her genotype (and, as I said to Equipro in my PM, that is the hardest, most challenging part of the GenoType Diet--the actual following of it is a joyous BREEZE, provided that your friend is open to preparing homemade food for the mainstay of her diet), my best advice in a nutshell is simply to "follow the Yellow Brick Road", namely:  eat from her superfood list for the bulk of her diet, augmented with neutrals for variety, and be sure to get plenty of exercise (ideally DAILY--this has been key for me), too.

Yes, I was a Gatherer according to the book but I bought the Swami kit and got typed as an Explorer. Tried the Gatherer diet but could never get on with it - nothing I can put my finger on but it felt wrong somehow, but the Explorer diet (not that I'm doing it that brilliantly at the moment) suits me much better.

Oh, Rachel, that was exactly my experience when I started (and still!) on the Gatherer diet, too!  It's a perfect fit, and cravings--which the BTD greatly helped, but there were still a few missing pieces, resulting in "slip and falls", if you will--are GONE.  Finito.  Done.

I guess you are a Gatherer after all.  I looked at page 94.  WEIRD!  Welcome to the fold!  If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  If it fits, you must acquit!  If cravings are gone, sing out RIGHT ON!
