Slowly, over a decade, I've been isolating things and becoming convinced of what I should and shouldn't eat. You'd think I would just look at my Type O list and GT-Explorer list as well as a custom SWAMI and I do, but at times I want to try things and when something shows it doesn't agree, I like to narrow it down.
My latest reinventing of what I could have taken by faith has been about oils. It's very hard to find packaged foods (those things which aren't good for us most of the time) which are made with a good oil. There are some which are extremely common (Canola, Sunflower, Palm Kernal or Fractionated Palm Kernal) and some of these are commercially promoted to be healthy as if one size fits all. Until recently I hadn't noticed that some protein bars, which otherwise had a small number of close to compliant ingredients, were causing a significantly higher amount of acid to pass through (and out) my digestive tract which was causing irritation, burning and rash and the point it passed out of my body. Over a few stints of eating them, then not eating them at all for periods of several days or weeks, I determined it was the palm kernal oil that was doing it. I've also seen it to lesser degrees with Safflower, Sunflower and a few other oils.
I'm thrilled to have finalized this conviction experientially as this has been an issue from time to time for much of my life ... that is the iritation, burning, etc. I'm down to only good oils for my type and the difference is great. It cuts out a lot of things both commercially and socially, but believe me its worth the losses for the gains!
I believe as an Explorer, although this is counter being a Type O, I make less Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase than most, so maybe it's related to reducing fat overall in my diet. I have known for a long time that I'm best with very lean protein sources.
Have any other Type O's (we who overproduce acid by nature) or Explorers experienced this with oils, that they cause a higher amount of acid to pass through and out the body? Is there a good explanation why avoid oils in particular cause this? |

I found out the avoid oils had a profound effect a long time ago... Usually, the reaction I have from an avoid oil is to burp rancid oil after about two days... Seems to happen almost every time I get stuck eating at a restaurant, no matter how compliant the food choices were, unless I am able to get a plain salad... |

We non-secretors produce much less IAP than our secreting peers, regardless of blood type. A nonnie O might even produce less IAP than an A secretor. |

When my gut was challenged regularly by gluten I reacted also to too much compliant EVOO, in salads or stir fried or grilled food. My digestion was stuck for hours. BT A secretor here ! |

I use only compliant @ home, but do notice a problem w/ restaurant meals & am guessing it's the oil. |

Ditto Possum. I do enjoy my walnut oil as a source of omega-3. |

Since I started using only Olive Oil, I feel so much better. Yet to try Flax seeds!, looking forward to it. Before I used to use Vegatable oil, sunflower oil. .maize oil, all of which did not make me feel good. So glad I found BTD |

I've found that even when I asked for just olive oil and lemon for my salad, I had to ask them if the the olive oil is just olive oil. A lot of restaurants use an oil that has olive oil as a base but has other oils (like corn oil) mixed in. |

Either make your own with known compliant oils or eat baked chips if they are compliant. |

agree! I have just received a bunch of kale in our co-op veggie box this week, decided to try this kale chip idea, as they are approx $10 a bag here if you buy them in a fancy 'health food' shoppe! I picked 4 large leaves from the red kale, rinsed, spread on a baking sheet, sprinkled with sea salt, cayenne pepper, parmesan and olive oil, in an oven at about 100 degrees they only took 3-4 minutes and came out lovely and crunchy, very tasty, highly recommend if you are usually a potato chip head and want to ween yourself off fried snacks. |
