Four of my five children have keratosis pilaris - those pesky red bumps that appear on the backs of the arms, thighs and face. It runs on my Dad's side of the family... he was either an O or B type (ectomorph). The worst case of my kids is one son who is most like my Dad - he has very fair skin and a lot of concentration of the bumps on his eyebrows. He is a B type Nomad. We relocated from Israel to the US 3.5 years ago. When we relocated the other kids who previously had smooth skin started to get bumps on their faces, upper arms and thighs. I consulted with a dermatologist and she said that dryer weather makes things worse. It is hard to separate the multiple variables causes here such as: Diet, Water, Environment, Humidity etc... I always suspected the dietary difference due to the cleaner foods that are available in Israel but we are so careful here that I am not sure anymore. I was interested to see if anyone's KP cleared up due to the Genotype diet. |

I had those little bumps on the back of my upper arms all through my youth. They disappeared quickly when I started the BTD, a dozen years ago. My theory was the elimination of corn products. |

My KP (along with psoriasis and rosacea) cleared up with the GTD. My skin is more hydrated than pre-GTD and I no longer have to use lotions and creams to keep it that way.
My main culprits are wheat and dairy products, which is why I have to look closely at ingredients for topical creams, shampoos, lotions, etc b/c they almost always contain some form of wheat. |

Amy that is very interesting regarding shampoos that contain wheat... what do you use? I think that my KP has slightly cleared up on the GTD, but I cannot see much difference in my teenagers yet - I know that KP is at its worst during puberty... |

For a "normal" commercial shampoo I use Free & Clear ( http://www.psico.com) Lately I have been using J.R. Liggett's bar shampoo ( http://www.jrliggett.com). It gives a nice clean but doesn't work so well with my naturally curly hair, I need something a bit more hydrating. I plan on trying Chagrin Valley bar shampoos once I run out of the other ( http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com) |

I agree, if you don't loose the wheat, dairy and sugar. My daughter was fighting this for five years before I explained that she was an explorer. Well she is just 10, however after talking about the diet for months on end, she is an expert. So here's hoping she lives a long full life! Seriously, get neem oil into the shampoo bottles and rub the skin with a little olive oil after a shower.
Good luck explaining how cheese, milk, bread and sugar fuels this! |

Sam did your daughter's KP go away? If so, how long did it take? Interestingly, the B Blood Types have the KP worse than the O blood types... My O blood type who is not an Explorer but rather a Gatherer or maybe a hunter is the only one who isn't affected... however, she may not have inherited the tendency in her DNA... |

I have had kp for most of my life. Mostly on the lower parts of my body. Been on BTD for 6 months and they haven't gone away yet. I'm eager to see them disappear on this WOL!! |

From the time my youngest brother 48 (type O) was able to eat table food he had those little bumps on his arms. The doctor said he was allergic to wheat. He still has those little bumps on his arms. As for me...I had them more into my teens and up. Since changing over to this way of life almost 10 years ago...no more bumps. By being compliant and staying away from the wheat, sugars and corn products and body brushing...the problem has been eliminated Debra |

Well, I can say this because I have a keen interest in this topic, mainly because my daughter was getting teased about her cheeks (bumps) in ballet class. Most distressful! The right diet will make a difference in one day. Yes, it's hard to believe, but I've seen these horrid bumps go from lumpy and red to flat overnight. Just one wrong food, even a cookie can keep these nasty bumps up and red. My daughter even started digging them out and tearing at them with her nails. She said they can be itchy when you eat spicy foods like curry, even the curried chick peas would set her off. Put pure tea tree oil on areas of the body where its really bad. Use a little neem oil and olive oil for the face. Smells bad, but who cares right? When your ready to say goodbye to this forever. It affects a young girls self esteem.
She has been taking the diet and all the restrictions very seriously for about a month, and we saw the biggest improvement inside a week. Her face is clear, but not her arms and leg yet. But it wont be long, I can see it going.
She is A+, and I have problems with them also, mostly when I eat out o- |

I didn't know it had a name! With all the skin issues I have, KP isn't one of them--amazing, huh?
3/4 of my children have these bumps. DH has them. Diet hasn't changed anything. |

For keratosis pilaris home remedy are... *Mix equal parts Sugar and Olive Oil and stir together, then use as a body scrub for the areas affected with Keratosis Pilaris. This body scrub should be made fresh, and used once a week. *Use an anti Dandruff shampoo as a body wash. This helps to improve Keratosis Pilaris for many people, but not everyone. Try it a few times to see if you see any improvement. If you do, continue using this treatment 2-3 times per week. |

I am just blown away by this thread.. first it did not occur to me that the bumps on one of the kids I brought up could have a name.. then I would trust that it will get better with BTD/GENO no doubt about it..
BUT what just blows me to bits: the many responses.. the instancy of efforts to help one another..
we have done this here for all sorts of serious things, but bumps-- would just never have occurred to me.. I am soooooo proud of all who are here..
I have great skin so no issue for me.. I personally use Vita Bath to wash from head to toes for 40 years, I believe it even keeps mosquitoes away.. don't know what is in it, its not cheap to buy, but it goes a really long way, so it is actually cheaper then any other soap.. I think soaps are way to harsh.. never used it.. as for shampoo, I used to itch on my heat until I changed to Vita Bath, and since then I never itch again.. and the shower never needs cleaning.. it sparkles.. (I use also almost any hair conditioner to rinse over my body in place of lotion.. ).. works fine..
BUT Shampoo is a good item to clean the shower walls if you use soap and gunk up shower doors.. .. shampoo is a cheap cleaner.. |
| When I see other peoples medicines schedule-I am happy to be here taking care of my health I only wish to drop weight more easily-life would be perfection Being 'here' creates understanding. BTD prevents damage from eating avoids. Thanks Dr D & your sups - all support and friendships |

I was thinking body brushing would help, too.
I used to have those as a younger person. Always bathed, as I am sure all those with these bumps are doing. I started using my washcloth and soap to scrub those areas hard. The bumps went away.
