I've been reading articles about soy after hearing from a friend that soy beans are very high in aluminium (10 times as much as any milk product [talk about toxifying the body!] and I've found that the health benefits may actually be totally overblown. Apparently the process of preparing the soy beans for conumption is very synthetic as well.

I'd love to get some feedback from people on this. I've swtiched to soy milk and tofu for the last 2 years, given up milk completely, and now I'm realising that it may not have been in my best interest to have done so. I'm thinking now switching to rice/goat milk. However I still very much look forward to your feedback.

Many Type As and Type ABs have expressed concern about soy products after reading warnings that soy products may be protease inhibitors--that is, they inhibit the enzyme secreted by the pancreas that facilitates protein digestion. Let's dispel this myth once an d for all. It is true that soy contains a protease inhibitor, named Bowman-Bird Soy Protease Inhibitor (BBI). However, BBI, far from being of harm to Type As and Type ABs, is actually a very good friend. Here's why:

-BBI protease inhibitor from soy has well-recognized anti-carcinogenic properties.

-BBI protease inhibitor from soy is a significant inhibitor of Human Leucocyte Elastase (HLE), an enzyme that dissolves the protein elastin and also degrades and inactivates a number of plasma proteins. Elastase probably plays a physiological function in neutrophil migration, phagocytosis, and tissue remodeling. HLE apparently plays a pathological role in pulmonary emphysema, rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis, infections, and inflammation.

Thus type As and Type ABS on soy-based diets can look forward to having lower levels of inflammation, allergy, cancer, and infection- thanks to this "poison" in soy. Another beneficial effect of soy with special importance to Type A is the ability of the phytochemical genestein to block the effects of the enzyme aromatase. Aromatase in an enzyme that produces estrogen and other steroids. Aromatase is located in estrogen-producing cells of the body. Many estrogen-positive cancers are inhibited by blocking this enzyme. Aromatase inhibitors are increasingly the drug of choice for managing metastic breast cancers that have retained estrogen sensitivity. Other aromatase inhibitors include high-lignan flaxseed oil and the flavones Apigenin (found in chamomile) and Chrysin (found in passion flower).

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I am a Type A+

In the past year I have bought nearly all of doctor D'Adamo's books; live right, cook right, eat right, aging, fatigue, cardiovascular disease, genotype diet. I love his research on an all different areas of health, however this recent discovery on soy has seriously concerned me. I mean protease inhibition aside, what about the massive amount of aluminium that's toxifying our body? I've bought the bromelain pineapple supplement to assist protein break down, however I'd like to focus this discussion on the aluminum content that we're consuming everytime we grab a glass of soy milk or eat tofu.

I believe Dr D has focused on that content and hasn t found that to be alarming....

find good sources of soy tofu, the milk is not necessarily   the best choice, think it isn t all that beneficial t those able to have soy in the first place...then there s edamame, and other forms of soy which are better sources and choices for an A.

which system are you now following?

and its not a recent discovery that about soy either.....so all is good

I think the best we can do is to follow Dr. D's guidelines, source the best products we can find or afford, and get on with life.  

This diet is so much less toxic to what I was eating before, that my body is cleaning out all of the incoming toxins as well as many stored toxins and finding energy to heal itself besides.

I'm not following a specific system from any book, however the book I reference the most for my diet is the 'Food and Supplement' list for Type A. It's a small concise book that breaks down all food groups (fruit, vegetables, meat etc), and lists which ones to eat and avoid from each group.

I have incoperated soy significantly into my diet. I drink around 4 literes of soy milk a week and I eat tofu at least once a week. Taking into cosideration the aluminium content of this, I'm consuming 40 times as much aluminum from the soy milk alone that I would be consuming , say, from skim milk.

ok good, yet you ve read the GTD, and you ve made a choice.....that thought alone is also good.....
have you roughly found out your GT yet?
thought of a secretor test?
or even a serotyping panel, to know your subtype A1 or A2?
I think those unique details alone are more important than worrying about all you read about soy.....what if it turned out you were a non secretor A2, explorer and soy wasn t meant for you in the first place?

investigate about your individuality it is a fun process!

I will rock the boat here and say Dr D is wrong on this one! (GASP) My homeopath says commerically produced soy is not healthy for anyone-for one thing it blocks calcium absorption. Soy products made in te traditonal Japanese method are fine-so really it is the processing that is the problem. I would switch to rice milk if I were you Tommy.

Dr. D would agree with you that commercial prepared soy is not good.. TVP is an example of a soy product that is not a good choice.

If you read the food lists he does not list "soy" and let you make a choice of any soy but lists, Tempeh-- Tofu and Soy Milk.. then he lists the avoid ingredients in another list, so if your soy milk is not the purest it is not the best choice. Many soy milks contain junk.. Silk is a brand that has a ton of additives.  What type of pan do you use to cook the tofu? If my memory serves me I think in the end they found that the pans where aluminum and they were the reason for the high aluminum content.

I am an A I eat tofu and tempeh more then once a week without concern. I trust Dr. D.. call me a fool if you want.

The choice becomes yours in the end. I am 47 many people think I am in my 30's, soy has been one of the best foods for me.

I recently put together all the soy posts, but am not sure how to access it, hate to ask but Lola.. can you find it?

There are many great local companies making miso and I've seen fresh non-gmo tofu and whole soybeans at farmer's markets recently in NY. People are starting demand better quality tofu and many local farmer's grow soybeans. Just like O's do the best they can with buying good quality meat, A's do the best they can with finding good quality tofu.
This company is one of my favorites located in Massachusetts. There are many local companies making good quality tofu products all around the country including Seattle, California, and the midwest.

Soy does have phytates (phytic acid) which blocks mineral absorption in LARGE amounts, but so do most grains and to a lesser degree vegetables. On the other hand phytic acid is a powerful anti-cancer compound in the digestive tract.

Although I think your statement is reasonably flexible (i.e traditional versus commercial) people really need to educate themselves about the constituents and actions of soy on a much, much deeper level. Soy's actions are too diverse and people too variable for simplistic notions like 'it's a poison' or it's 'bad for everyone.'

Correct me if I'm wrong though (kind of an offshoot of the issue, but you mentioned it), soaking grains for 8 hours will reduce the amount of phytates.  Correct?  

I think Andrea's post is spot on and it is what my Doctor has recommended.  Stay away from the junk, use only pure stuff.  If the stuff in Japan is better, why can't we get it.  Or make it ourselves?  My doctor recommends using the beans, tempeh and miso.  He says the process used for all these other soy products is typically the part that makes soy probably not so good.  I don't know if he's distinguishing pure Tofu and the commercial junk or not.  But either way, I've read the labels on some of the "health" food tofu and the ingredients are things I don't want in my body.  Although I hear that there are purer forms of tofu being made.  I have not ventured into tofu all that often and I certainly don't drink silk.  There's all kinds of stuff in soy milk and even rice milk for that matter that I don't want.  I need to make my own.  But I haven't felt the need to drink milk anyways.  Although it's good to have something to cook with.  

I did just put some organic genmai miso in my soup today and I can tell, that be some good eats for sure.  Great flavor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been eating edamame (non GM0) on and off for a very long time.  I get the shelled beans and boil them until a fork goes through them and add a little butter, tamari soy sauce and tumeric powder on top.  

Lately, I've also added sliced avocado and about two teaspoons of chia seeds. The chia seeds give it a little crunchy flavor and they mix well with the tamari and butter.  When I add the chia seeds to a veggie such as soy for dinner I'm always glad the next morning when performing my ablutions.

I tried tofu and I don't like it except when mixed in with a smoothie.
