After I peel away the tough white papery skin from the garlic, there is a thin pinkish skin attached to the clove.  Can I leave this skin on the clove, fry it & eat it like that?  I'm just wondering whether or not the skin can be harmful. Other than adding a bit of fiber I can't see any harm.  I welcome your comments and thank you in advance for any guidance you can give me about eating garlic with some skin left on.

I always leave the inner skin on whether it is pink, white, yellow or purple. I remove the outer papery skin, although the instructions on my garlic press says that one can leave the papery outer skin on also.

Rex:  It's fine to eat.

For example onions have the exact same thing on each and every layer.  And if we eat onion slices we consume it as well.

Just get rid of the papery stuff on the outside and your fine

Yeah but if someone else has to clean it they will hate you. I had a roommate who loved his press but never cleaned it so I did.

I had barbecued garlic shoots once, super good.

Thanks to all.  I ate the garlic with the thin skin on this morning...I hardly noticed that the skin was there after it was broiled.  I spread the chopped garlic on top of my broccoli rabe, topped it with a drizzle of hemp oil & broiled it.  It was crisp & delicious.

Rex...some have purple skin...some have white skin...some have pink skin...there may be even more colors...it depends on the type of garlic you have.   My girlfriend's parents supply me with a lot of purple skinned garlic.  Yummilcious.

If it slips off when I'm cutting the garlic I remove it. If it stays on well, I don't worry about it.

There's no way that garlic skin could hurt you in any way- the worst it could do is have a weird texture that's unpleasant when you eat it.

Oh, I'm so glad that the general opinion is that garlic skin is ok to eat if I choose to.  If I had to be concerned about getting rid of every bit of it I'd be very unhappy...it would be so tedious.

Lola...the garlic I buy has "many" very small cloves...it would take me too long to wack that many cloves at one time...I love garlic & eat a lot of it. I agree that wacking works very well if I want only a few cloves but I just don't have the time or the patience for doing so much of it.

When I am making bone broth...like the onion, I leave the skins on.   It gets strained out in the end.

That makes sense.  I was thinking I never have a problem getting it off, but yeah, when they're small, it gets annoying.  I've never left mine on though.  I should try it sometime.  Might add an extra crunch.
