When I'm up north here we've got a home town ice cream parlor that is excellent. They're so good they don't even take plastic. And we have a few Italian resturants like that here too.. Anyway their ice cream agrees with me. I had some of their blueberry ice cream tonight ..Yum. I've had enough rice dream to know it makes me sneeze and I just feel like I've had a bit of wheat after I eat it.

Anyone other O's experience this as well?  In fact many of the processed rice products don't agree with me.

DH (type B) feels rotten after eating Rice Dream.  We assume it's all the thickeners.  He's pretty sensitive to them.  My AB daughter doesn't do well with Rice Dream either.

What's in the ice cream at the little ice cream parlor? Is this actual dairy ice cream or their homemade rice version?

I can't have dairy at all, except for butter- it makes me congested (which leads to vertigo), leads my fibromyalgia to flare up (muscle aches and fatigue), and causes anger/lack of patience/depression.

I've never bought rice dream frozen dessert because I read the ingredients and decided it wasnt' worth it. If I'm going to consume "avoids" in my ice cream, I'm getting the one made with coconut milk! (That one is basically coconut milk and agave.)

I know some Italian places have sorbetto, and that's pretty pure stuff.  I can't have the sugar, but that would be my first choice...mainly just fruit and sugar.

I probably would feel better after eating real pure ice cream than rice dream ice cream too.  One avoid is sometimes better than ten... although dairy is one big avoid for me, a little cream doesn't totally make me feel rotten (it makes me gain weight and probably makes me more likely to come down with something, but the initial response is ok).

Rice Dream makes me more sick than regular ice cream.  I allow myself a bowl of ice cream no more than once every three days if I feel I need it.  I might be able to eat frozen yogurt even more frequently, but I've never tried it.

My main issues with ice cream (besides weight gain) are excess mucus, increased allergies, gut bloating, soft stool and urgency to void.  I have the same issues with Rice Dream, magnified, plus head congestion.

I'd stick with ice cream, but choose the more plain flavors, avoiding Moose Tracs (peanut butter), cookie dough or cookies - cream (wheat) and similar flavors.

My SWAMI diet is a blend of BTD and GTD Explorer, but I'm not totally compliant.  Also I try to choose foods that have a Low Glycemic index.  DW and DD are A+, probably also Explorer.

I always felt that the problem was not so much the rice in rice dream, but all the other stuff that has been mentioned by others.

Yeah, none of that stuff is very pure.  Different preservatives and possible avoid oils.  Just like rice milk.  I need to learn how to make the milk  myself.

I'd rather eat peanuts coated with honey than eat ice cream.  Well, ice cream is pretty darn good though.  I think if you make that yourself, it could possibly be pure.  Can't you make it with honey also?

I guess I'll go with that next as the ice cream has finally caught up with me. I feel real bad today and haven't been sleeping well the last few nights. Time to ditch it again. I just don't feel like I'm getting enough calcium. TCBY used to have great frozen tofu. As with anything else I like, they stopped selling it..

Anyone taking calcium supplements?  I seem to feel better when I have the right amount of calcium. But now that the ice cream has caught up with me that's not an option anymore...

Yeah, Art, ice cream is a totally bad source for calcium.  NAP has a great one Phytocal.  I don't do calcium citrate, which the Drs recommend as easier to absorb, but the citric acid used to make it is probably corn.

you ll find calcium in other food sources like greens, in more concentration than what the main stream tells you about dairy!

I take calcium supplements even though Nomads can eat some dairy.  I have liked the seaweed-based calcium sold through the BTD store better than any other I've taken over the years.

I make instant ice cream in my VitaMix using EITHER 1 cup of plain yogurt OR 1 cup of Organic Valley ricotta cheese 3 tbsp. homemade almond milk plus 3 cups of frozen fruit and a bit of either vanilla or grated nutmeg. Add a bit of maple syrup or honey if you use fruit that isn't really sweet.

The first time I made it with the Organic Valley ricotta and frozen peaches we both thought we had died and gone to heaven:  It was THAT DELICIOUS!  In fact, I started a thread called "Ice cream for supper" to tell y'all about it......that was several weeks ago.

Using my VitaMix, I have to use the tamper tool to pound the fruit down into the yogurt or ricotta cheese.  A less powerful blender might not be able to do the job.

It takes about a minute to "make the ice cream" and you eat it right away.  And don't worry about what to do with the left overs.  I don't think you will have any.

Yes, absolutely, I react to Rice Dream with big-time congestion.  I figured out at least 20 years ago that I can tolerate real ice cream much better.  It's probably all the gums in Rice Dream that makes it so bad for me.

O how I waited for Rice Dream "ice cream"'s launch and rejoiced over it in the 80s.
My macrobiotic pantry was very limited then, and it was my only frozen food.
I thought it'd be my go-to Cheat, but...
Meh.
I settled for the very occasional Haagen-Dasz vanilla...

Frozen raspberries & ice in a food processor. Need it sweeter, add a touch of agave. I think that's okay for all types.
