I've recently started taking the "Blood Builder" supplement by Bryon Richards (www.wellnessresources.com)  I was taking a perscription for iron which my Doctor perscribed called "Repliva," but it was called off the market!!!  And just when m hair appeared to take on much less shedding!!!   Unbelievable.

I know I need to take an iron supplement because my ferritin was only 12 when last tested.  I tried the one Dr. D recommended, Floravite, which is a liqiuid iron but it appeared to give me loose stools.

MY QUESTION IS:  Must a person's stools be very dark in color as an indication that the iron is getting absorbed in the body?   When I was on Repliva my stools were very dark.  However, in taking Bryon Richard's supplement they are no longer dark which concerned me whether or not I was truly absorbing the iron.

I called the Company and she said because the supplement I am taking is a "different and better form of iron, my stools aren't dark."   Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. . . . I wonder.  And now my hair is massively falling out again.  

I would appreciate everyone's input.  Is there a recommended better supplement I should take?  I tried "Iron Citrate" but the hair still fell out.

Dr. D input needed.

I would think that dark stools would be an indication that the iron is undigested and staying in the GI tract, rather than being absorbed into your bloodstream. At least, that's what makes sense to me when I think about it.

However, the fact that your hair is falling out again (apparently this is a symptom of low iron for you) is a clear sign that you're not getting enough iron. Have you tried taking this supplement in a higher dosage, at least until you can get a better supplement to take?

Is Floravite the same thing as Floradix? I've heard Floradix mentioned numerous times as being a good iron supplement- easily absorbed and not constipating. I don't have any personal experience though as I've never needed an iron supplement. When you were taking the Floravite, was your hair falling out?

Ruthiegirl -- I think you're right, it's called Floradix, I spelled it wrong.  I couldn't take it long enough to determine if it helped with my hair.  It would cause me to be a "loosie-goosie" if you know what I mean.  

In regards to the "dark stools" it's clearly indicated on many sites, if the iron is getting absorbed, your stools should be dark.  That I'm sure of.

Andrea -- I would love to know my secretor status, but right now $$$$ is A big problem. The alimony I was receiving from my divorce has ended and I am finacially struggling.  I'm lucky if I can afford groceries.

I just looked at my bottle of floradix.  It says it has juice concentrates, and then the herbs, spinach, etc, vit.C and iron, plus some b vits.  I really like the stuff.  You reminded me, and I need to take it as it's that time of the month.....anyway.  I still have a bit of hair thinning, but it's seems better lately.  I've been taking turmeric for what I believe are fibroids....
But back to you.  I am wondering why the floradix gave you loose movements, and it makes me wonder about candida.  Do you know the symptoms of candida?  I wonder if that is part of your problem.  Again, as many above have said, it does all go back to the health of the intestines.  So following the btd should help that.   But possibly you have something else going on that is part of the problem.  I know that people that have candida infections can suffer hair loss and malabsorption.  We thought it was gluten, but maybe it's candida.  It's a common problem.  Have you ever had antiobiotic treatment in the last few years for any illness?

Well, many iron supplements cause constipation, and Floradix is famous for not doing so. It makes logical sense that, if normal iron sups don't clog you up, the "special non constipating formula" might loosen you up too much.

What would happen if you took a cheap iron supplement along with the floradix? Maybe the constipating action of a cheap drusgtore version of the iron would balance out the "loosening" effects of the Floradix while the Floradix iron was the one that got absorbed well?

Can you fortify your diet with more iron rich foods that are compatible with your blood type.  Natural is always the best way to go.  You could add things like seaweed, parsley, and spinach to your salads.  I think those are high in iron.

Iron absorption is a complicated pathway. Hormones are involved.

Rose you have been eating the blood type diet for quite some time.

Paulam:  I've been wondering about the Candida thing as well.  I haven't had an antibiotic for several years, and that was given to me for a bladder infection.

So, in moving forward, if in fact my hair loss is due to "candida" what does one do?  Take?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Redlilac:  I've been ER4BT and many iron rich foods for quite some time.  And still massive hair shedding.

Rosebud, this might sound like an oxymoron question, but could there possibly be a
substitute for the drug taken off the market that was working well for you?  Could
you ask a pharmacist?  What does your doctor suggest?

Also, this multi from NAP which is for all Genotypes contains ferrous succinate.
Not sure if there is enough in it to be helpful for you, but it's one of the few products
I found that contains this particular iron.  Must be absorbable or Dr. D wouldn't
be using it in his formulas

I actually love stinging nettles and it's at the top of the list.  NAP has it, utica diocia I think.  I like one that is freeze dried by planetary formulas.  I take it for allergies and it is on the list for blood building for type O's.  You could start with that one.  Another thing on the list for A's is caprylic acid, and that is a very good yeast/candida fighter that I have also taken in the past, just not right now.  I wish this would help your iron/hairloss problem.  Keep us posted.  I think if you are a non secretor of any blood type, that candida can be more of an issue.  Then sugar avoidance is really important.  This could put you in the explorer genotype.  But it gets complicated....got to do the measurements, etc.  But you could certainly start with the yeast/fungus protocol and see if it helps along with high compliance to the btd.....

You need the secretor test  which I know costs money but so do supplements, or just go on the A nonnie diet without the test and see how you do, a few have done that.



Also measure yourself for the GT diet and see which GT you are. If you are a Teacher your GI tract may need support which will help with iron.



  I am not sure why you have not measured yourself for the GT diet .

It seems that you keep asking for help but I feel like I don't have all the information needed. I know the first thing Dr. D would do is get this information so he could make the best possible food/supplement choices for you.

Andrea:  I boght the GenoType Diet book and "tried" to measure myself, which was so confusing.  I must have measured my index and ring finger 20 times, and each time I get a different answer.  I "believe" my ring fingers are longer.  I know I have whorls.

That is why I wish I could find someone in this area familiar with the GenoType Diet and taking measurements to help me.

Perhaps this is fairly well tolerated due to the ferrous fumarate, and may be better absorbed given the vitamin C.  The addition of folic acid and vitamin B 12 may be of benefit, particularly for postop gastric bypass patients, who are at greater risk for vitamin b 12, and to a lesser extent, folic acid deficiency.   Succinic acid is a comoponent of the citric acid cycle.

My opinion:  Although I do not recommend any product in particular, perhaps the combination of ferrous fumarate, which may be better tolerated (perhaps fewer GI side effects than ferrous sulfate, per a recent Bari MD talk), and the added vitamin c may further enhance absorption.

This is an interesting post about Repliva. A substitute might be Easy Iron or Gentle Iron twice a day which contain 29mg of chelated iron (Ferrous Glycinate) as well as vitamin C, folic acid, and B12 and Ferrous Fumerate 29mg twice a day. I was going to do this myself, but I was having doubts about pure non-heme iron and when I went to Walgreens I lucked out and found a supplement called Bifera which I'm taking morning and night with my multi-vitamin. It has 6mg of heme iron called HIP and 22mg of non-heme called PIC. So far, so good. I hope to get out of the anemia category before I go to the doctor so she doesn't have me get an IV injection. I see from the Blood Building protocol that a chlorophyll supplement may also help.

After I started taking Polyflora AB (NAP probiotics) my stool got darker and I actually go once a day (I have a tendency to get constipated).  I think that means more minerals are being absorbed?  Anyway maybe the probiotics are creating healthy bacteria that can make these minerals or at least help you to absorb them. I've noticed a difference.  Maybe probiotics will help with iron production and absorption?

I open the polyflora capsule and put the powder on my tongue to let the powder disintegrate.  For me this makes all the difference (maybe because I'm a non-secretor).

I always take probiotics on an empty stomach so they will make it through the acid of the stomach to get into the small intestine where I need it.
