See if you can get to the health food store in the morning (or ask somebody to go for you) and get some immune-enhancing herbs. They make some pretty tasty syrups. |

Is it the flu? Sounds like a virus. Elderberry syrup, electrolytes (I blogged a recipe for homemade ones just recently). I'd definitely get him in to the doctor with that long a fever. |

| No nasal symptoms. Fever is usually around 99....goes to 100+ sometimes - most often in afternoon/evening. Symptoms started with a nighttime fever. |

Wish I had a strep test kit for home http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/000188.php For now, I'll "strength test" with a list of symptoms by Dr. Sears here: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/8/t083900.asp We'll see if lemon juice causes throat pain, for instance. Child is not feeling all that sick except when the fever is up. If it is Group A beta-hemolytic strep, then what antibiotic would be recommended for an O non-secretor? About 3% of untreated Group A beta-hemolytic strep throat cases lead to rheumatic fever...the purpose of treating this strain of strep is to prevent rheumatic fever, not so much to treat the symptoms of strep.... |

| I've had strep so bad it was really scarlet fever. Strange rash and all. I was very, very sick, much sicker than 100 degrees. My throat and tonsils were so swollen I could barely breathe. I remember a friend telling me about lemon water.....she boiled whole lemons in water (she cut the lemons in half, but boiled them with the peeling on so you get the benefit of the lemon oils too). Yeah, it burns going down, but it did help. I know it's no fun having a sick child, especially if you don't know what it is for sure. I'll be praying for him. |

| Sorry you were so sick. Dr. Sears Clue: Citrus juices, such as orange juice, often "burn" the sore throat caused by a virus but are usually not painful to strep throat. |

| Hm....well, even breathing was painful for me. I couldn't even whisper to communicate with my mom. Swallowing anything, including water or spit, was excruciating. This was about 8 years ago. I haven't had it since being on BTD. Anyway, keep us updated about your son. I hope you find something that helps him soon. Best just to let it burn off if you can. |

| For non-secretors identifying A strep would be important to prevent the possibility of rheumatic fever. Rheumatic fever occurs 1-5 weeks AFTER the strep infection. Just getting over strep doesn't prevent one from getting rheumatic fever... Blah! |

| Have you looked in his throat with a flashlight? Any red bumps or the worse white bumps would get me right into the doc. I don't know if a kid can do this, because deflect O tastes horrible, but if you combine it with some strong juice to mask the flavor, like cranberry juice, and gargle it, that can do wonders for a sore throat. This O-non can really get hit hard by strep (and Dr. Sears may be right, because I can drink citrus when I have strep without any more pain than any other drink). I don't know very much about which antibiotics are better for which type, but the one that works for me and strep is zithromyacin. If he's not allergic to penicillin like I am, then there are other good options, but that's the one for me. |

Interesting reading here on rheumatic fever: http://www.homeopathic.com/articles/view,102 For today: fever is gone thus far, voice is back to normal, diarrhea remains but desire to eat has returned so I suspect the bowels will normalize. |

| Avoid dairy. I know it's hard for young people(How old is the child?), but it causes all upper respiratory illnesses. It's one of the worst things for an O, if not the worst! I mean avoid it all the time, not just when sick, which I'm sure you are doing. I don't know why some of these infections are so stubborn. I remember some & am glad that's in the past. O non Fever.came first since 4 days Then sore throat last day is hoarse Two days diarrhea Now sounds like a bit of phlem with rare cough here and there No chills Dry heat Not much appetite Must recommend fluids else child doesn't drink much Get fluids in the kid. If you have to give him/her frozen juice pops (or Pedialite frozen pops) to get fluids in. You don't want to get them dehydrated. Pediatricians say fine if they don't want to eat but it's a must to get them to drink.. flat ginger ale. (I'd worry about hfc another time) If the fever gets too high, into a luke warm bathtub to bring it down. I agree with Melissa, elderberry syrup will kill it if it's the flu. |

Mrs. T, This child almost never gets sick - and I meant that! Mayflowers, we used room temp mineral water and Throat Coat tea with agave nectar and Nighty Night tea with agave nectar. A sprinkling of polyflora, zinc, vitamin c, proberry capsule and homeopathic remedy Apis Melifica were also used sparingly. If diarrhea remains, carob will be the answer. |

| Charcoal capsules worked wonders on my sick child years ago when he had an extended bout of diarrhea. You could also try a compliant version of the BRAT diet. |

My kids wouldn't drink that. (My kids are 16 and 18 ) My mom used to give me carob for D. I still love carob. tasty. |

I don't know if kids his age usually get diarrhea with strep... do they? It sounds more like a virus to me, but then I never take chances with strep, if I can't knock a sore throat down as soon as it starts (with deflect), and it looks bad, then I get it checked. |

This child is no ordinary one He's been raised with Live Right For Your Type. Traditional Medicinals has products specifically made for children. I use dto shy away from Throat Coat mainly because sage and cinnamon are avoids for O non's but we got it a few months ago and it has been welcomed. Now, the Cold Care tea makes for tearing/tears running down cheeks so we do stay away from that one. Tummy Comfort and Nighty Night have been welcome for many years! Here's the product line: http://www.traditionalmedicinals.com/?title=just+for+kids+teas |

Source Naturals makes something called Wellness Herbal Kids that I give mine. It has echinacea, goldenseal, honeysuckle, forsythia fruit, peppermint, soy bean --I didn't know that was in there! I won't give it to Elizabeth anymore!-- licorice root, schizonepeta, phragmites, platycodon, burdock, bamboo shoot, elderberry, ginger, boneset, eleuthero root and elder flower. Then the base is veg glycerine, water, honey, peppermint flavor and potassium benzoate. It might not do the trick for an O, but it helps As and ABs. |

Stuffy nose today and still no fever. So I think we are over whatever it was... That "interesting" article I posted talks about an outbreak of rheumatic fever unrelated to any known sore throat... |

Vicki, maybe I didn't look hard enough, but when I went to that link I didn't see the part about rheumatic fever. |
